It's time don your running shoes once more to walk or run 1k or 5k in our upcoming "Run for the Cure". Come alone, join a team, bring a friend, bring your family, bring 10 friends. Just be sure you come. There should be well over 1000 walkers and runners out there. 1117 participated last year and we expect to eclipse that number handily. For you runners, the course will be fast AND ACCURATE with every kilometer clearly marked. And for the truly fast runners, the top 3 males and females will receive prizes. Get your entry forms online at cbcf.org or drop in to any CIBC bank branch and pick one up. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thank You Organizers AND Volunteers!!

The day was warm, humid and raining with some head wind accompanying the rain on the home stretch of the tour, but the spirit of participants was not dampened one bit as 76 runners toed the line for the 5k and 38 lined up for the full meal deal of one complete circle of the lake. There was added excitement in the shorter event as Laurentian University was holding it's "Open". Ottawa Carleton, Nipissing , Cambrian and Laurentian University duked it out in teams for top honours on the day. I'm told Laurentian came out on top. Our Masters runner,Todd Withers, beat out all the young talent while Lisa Labreque came in third overall and first female in what may have been her fastest 5k to date. She is now challenging the best males in the area.

Times were a little off in the half due to the conditions but nothing really deters Derek Reed as nobody approached his devastating pace. Brent Poulsen made a valiant effort but fell minutes short. Karen Cowling took the top female position as was expected. There are no ladies in the area yet able to run Karen's pace for the long stuff.

So, everything went exactly as expected in the 1/2 with everybody coming in just where they should. WELL, NOT EXACTLY!. As Bob Dylan would say, "The times they are a changing". Only a few short years ago, when Mauro Sorcinelli and I would enter the long stuff, we would always come across the line ahead of the ladies and all was well in our running world. Then Karen Cowling came along. We held her onslaught off for a few runs but one day she soundly trounced us and we never passed her again. We got over that after a while by rationalizing that Karen is probably top ten in Canada in marathoning. All was well again. Two years ago Karen Beaulieu took a run at us but fell 12 seconds short in the 5k. We breathed easier when she moved away. It looked like smooth sailing for Mauro and I as we headed into this years tour. While our training wasn't at peak, we were still in good shape and nobody in our running group had really challenged us when the chips were down. The race started and the runners fell into their expected positions. Mauro, Stephanie Koett and I ran together across Cardiac Hill to the Beaver Dam water hazard where I valiantly took the lead as Steph's eyesight is suspect at the best of times. I showed Steph and Mauro the way and then took off up the next grade. In only a few metres my "Invincible" title was rudely stripped from me as Steph pulled up beside me and thanked me for pacing her though the water hazard and then promptly motored off up the hill with Mauro in hot pursuit. I was left gasping for humid air as she pulled away and away......At least I was spit out early. She toyed with Mauro for a full 17k when she unceremoniously dumped him as well. She then sped off into the distance to finish up only seconds behind Shawn Schryer who IS SUPPOSED TO BE 2 leagues faster. He apparently had to dig real deep to keep the little blighter from overtaking him right on the track in front of everybody. All the while back on the road Mauro and I were still struggling to get home in one piece. We knew our worlds were forever changed. It's now just a question of when the next one is going to pass us. Congratulations Stephanie Koett, our second place overall lady.

Good going Karen. Don't let the time fool you. The course was very hilly. Karen placed second in her age group which she has been consistently doing since she moved to HEE HAW Land. (That would be Knoxville)
