Rocks!! Stool Winners

Stephanie Koett - 1rst Marathon Female, Connor Smythe and Ken Stubbings - Marathon age group winners

The 34th annual Friendly Massey Marathon, the 21st annual Spanish River Half and the 3rd annual Chutes 10k were held on Sunday July 18 in the town of Massey. There was a good turnout at the 6 am start time as all 3 events go off together. The largest field was the 1/2 with 131 finishers followed by the 10k with 70 and the marathon with a small but enthusiastic count of 52 runners and walkers.

Weather was very good for all runs with early morning temperatures around 13 degrees and slowly working up to the very low 20s under partly cloudy skies by late morning. The very early start time has always ensures most of the runs are completed before the heat of the day really gets going.

Good conditions lead to good results. Below are top placings in all 3 events. Special kudos to Rocks!! members Sara McIlraith who placed 2nd overall female in the half marathon and Stephanie Koett who placed 1rst overall female in the marathon. Steph adds her thoughts following the results.

Tomorrow is a new day by Stephanie Koett……….

The morning started with perfect running weather. I had a goal set of running a sub 3:30 full marathon. Within the first 14 km, the IT / Quad injury in my left leg, which had forced me to take a week off running prior to the race, started giving me issues. I stopped a couple of times to massage and stretch my legs…..only 32 more km to go : ( I was not in a happy place at that point. : ( My mind was made up, I would settle for a half marathon run that day. As I resigned myself to shutting down at the halfway point (end of the first loop), I relaxed and slowed down. My leg issue turned into discomfort and the 25 km left did not seem unrealistic. Yes I had a realistic goal of a sub 3:30 run, but my reason for running is the challenge, the events, and the company of others. Tomorrow will be another day for my self- imposed goal. I continued past the halfway point at a slightly reduced pace. My mind was refocused on a new “just finish” goal. J J J !!!!!!!

Thanks James!!! As it turns out I had a running partner for most of the second half of the race. James succeeded in keeping me thoroughly amused and took my mind off the discomfort.

The moral of the story……..is remember why you run. When it comes down to achieving better race times learn to adjust to suit the conditions. Tomorrow is a new day!!!!!

On another note, I was elated when my shadow for the past couple of marathons continued on even though I had to stop and slow down. Congratulations Connor…..the pupil defeats the teacher…..You ROCK!!!!!

As it turns out I ended up the first female in at a time of 3:37.

Another exceptional Massey Marathon for the archives.

Under ideal open-water conditions, a record number of swimmers took to the 27th annual Ian McCloy Island Swim on Sunday, July 18 in Lake Nepahwin.
This year’s swim, with 90 entrants, also raised over $10,000 for pancreatic cancer research at the Canadian Cancer Society.
Hugh Ferguson, 73, an Ontario master’s swimming champion, led the fundraising in honour of his late wife Maureen, who died in December 2009 after a short battle with this aggressive cancer. They had been married 50 years.
Ferguson set a personal best time of 57.50 minutes in the 2-mile event in the McCloy swim.
The overall winner of the 2-mile swim was Jacob Toner in 36.25 minutes. Buddy Green extended his one-mile winning streak to seven with a victory in the one-mile event. He finished in 18.59 minutes.
The swim is the third event of five in the Sudbury Fitness Challenge.
