  1. NEW WEBSITE: SudburyRocks Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes

Once again we've revised the website for our SudburyRocks!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes. The change was deemed appropriate and necessary to address 2 major concerns. The first was ease of access to all required information by our users (you). The second was ease of maintenance and updating by us. While the previous site may have been prettier, it didn't satisfy those needs in the best way. The new site went live on Friday May 7. So far most if not all the required information for the site is available. We will be updating constantly and are still working on making it a little fancier.

Walkers and runners take note: Registration opens for the May 1, 2011 run on September 30, 2010.

Sudbury volunteers rock! - Michelle Brunette & Ania Derecka

May 10, 2010 By: Sudbury Northern Life Staff
A sincere thank you to over 350 volunteers who made the Sudbury ROCKS!!! Race Run Walk for Diabetes a huge success. Through enthusiastic volunteers and participants, close to $40,000 has been pledged to support Canadian Diabetes Association initiatives. Volunteers are also integral in spreading the message of health and fitness front and centre in Sudbury’s streets.

Thank you to all race marshals and the water station crews including the Minnow Lake Lions Club (Roy Charrette), Diabetes Clothesline (Vivian Mullen), Marymount College (Angie Fievoli), Lo Ellen S.S. (Brittany Caines), Cadets (Capt. John Adams), Whitefish Lion’s Club (Ken Shamess), KPMG (Stephanie Brouse), Teacher’s Lion’s Club (Carol Charlton), CAW Local 598 Retirees (Brian MacDonald), Gagnon Opticians (Josee Gagnon), Laurentian Chinese Club (Haoming Liu), Canada Broker Link (Debbie Young), and the hundreds of individual volunteers such as Sheri Tavella and Kayla Rewega. You are the ambassadors of our race and, on behalf of the entire Sudbury ROCKS!!! executive team, we thank each and every one of you. See you in 2011.

Great running controversies of our time: Commercial edition

by the Shuffler : a blog for IRUN May 10th, 2010

The happiest days are for me are always the ones when the running magazines arrive. (Mr. Shuffler can attest to this). When I spot one of them rolled up inside my mailbox, my heart lifts as I prepare to read and re-read the articles. Unfortunately, this month in Runner’s World there was another one of those @#$# Pearl Izumi ads that trashes slow runners. So you can imagine what that did to my giddy, magazine-just-got-here mood. I’ve reproduced the text below so you too can experience my outrage:

The Ad:

“The marathon. Once a test of will, now a test of patience. The marathon used to be an elite athletic contest. These days it’s an all day affair where some people mosey across the finish line seven hours after they started. Now don’t get us wrong. We don’t want to take anything away from these ‘finishers’. But we are fairly certain that Pheidippides wanted people to beat more than the sunset. In our humble opinion, the marathon is a race that was meant to be, well, raced. Because when you race the marathon – when you truly give it everything you have and then some – you honor the spirit of the marathon. And that is exactly what it will take to keep running’s most venerable race alive and well. So next time you’re toeing the line, respect the marathon. Run like an animal.”

This is part of a larger campaign that they are running, which includes a website called the Running Preservation Society.

I almost don’t know where to start with this ad. But I’ll do my best:

1.This ad strongly implies that the only reason to run a marathon is to race it. But let’s be clear, if the only people who were allowed to do marathons were those for whom it is an elite athletic contest, marathons would be one tenth the size, if that. Running would be on par with lacrosse for number of participants and prestige (no offense to running lacrosse fans). Instead, we’ve got a thriving sport that means more exposure in the media, more new runners every year and because of that strong interest, more potential elites signing up. We’ve got millions of people out having fun outside with their family and friends, maybe raising money for charities and improving their fitness. What the hell is wrong with that?
2.For some of us, truly giving it everything we’ve got means a seven-hour marathon finish. We’re not all built to elite specifications and our personal best varies significantly from one runner to the next. One runner’s seven-hour finish may be the mental equivalent of another’s three-hour finish. Comparing finishing times across runners tells you nothing at all about how much effort was involved in their run.
3.I don’t think Pheidippides intended that anyone replicate his run seeing as how he died. In actual fact, he ran 150 miles (so 123.8 miles longer than a modern marathon) over two days. In all likelihood, he probably didn’t beat the sunset on either of those two days. So basically, by their logic, anyone over at Pearl Izumi who can’t run 150 miles at once is a pussy.
4.I’m going to out on a limb and suggest that more marathon finishers, more running shoe purchasers and more Runner’s World readers fall closer to the “seven-hour finishers” category. Ergo, Pearl Izumi is probably selling more shoes to slow runners than to fast ones. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you (or as my running buddy put it, shooting themselves in the foot). I, for one, would not buy a Pearl Izumi shoe or product on principle. If they don’t think much of me as a runner, I don’t think much of them as a company.
What do you think of these ads? Funny? Stupid? Rage-inducing? Would you buy/not buy Pearl Izumi products based on these ads?
