Our
Best Event Yet!
The SudburyROCKS!!!
Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes easily surpassed last years
participant numbers by a full 300 bringing our total amount
to 1800 for our 2010 event. All event entries increased
with the 5k being the biggest draw with 670 entries. The
marathon Relay gained some legs, actually quite a few
of them, with 14 teams entered this year. Our most fun
run is definitely the Kids 'Fit 'N' Fun 1k. About 200
eager youngsters, most towing parents, took off like sprinters
- and some of them actually held the pace with front running
times just above 4 minutes. Lots of friendly rivalry and
banter comes out of our Celebrity Challenge 5k. This sub
event is carried on within our regular 5k where 'celebs'
from the local media vie for top spot which brings bragging
rights and a trophy to the winning company. You'll find
the details on the Challenge
Results here.
The rain
that came at about 9:30 am did nothing to dampen the spirits
of the runners or our phenomenal volunteers. We take our
hats off and salute all those water station attendants,
marshals, cyclists, police, finish line attendants and
everyone else who contributed to making an unforgettable
experience for many. So far we have raised over $37,000
in pledges for the Canadian Diabetes Association, our
recipient charity. The pledges are still coming in too.
The Race will also give our proceeds to the CDA once we've
paid our bills. Hopefully we can add another $10,000 to
the cause.
We thank
all those who supported us. From numerous sponsors, some
who have been with us from the start and many newcomers
as well, to those who cheered our people on the course
and also those who exercised patience and courtesy when
we impeded your way at numerous intersections.
It was such
fun I think we'll do it all over again next year - just
a little bit better. See you next year on May 1, 2011.

Thank you
- To the organizers for a great race. Once again,
you managed to give us a most enjoyable weekend.
- To your volunteers. They were incredible. Every
marshal and water station showed great enthusiasm
and most encouraging to the runners.
- To the minister at the Calvin Presbyterian Church
on Auger who came out to cheer us on.
- To family members who travel every year to participate.
Congratulations
· To Stephanie and Sarah. I want to run
fast like you when I grow up.
· To all medal and prize winners.
· To all Sudbury Rocks Members who participated.
Well Done

Hello Everyone,
Well my time is slower; but I (we) are still having
a good time at the Rocks Marathon. The rain did
not really dampen the run too much. It kept the
humid heat away. The only prize money for us this
year was the $5 Lynn found on the road. She has
it nailed down to the dresser as to imply "not
for Ken". Congrats to Stephanie on her big
win. Drew, I hope you are feeling better. You
had a good race. The race organizers did a good
job this year. The only item I noticed was that
the YMCA motivational signs were a little hard
to read; but thank you for taking the time to
think of us. I did notice there were more volunteers
this year. Thanks to each one of you for sticking
it out in the rain. (I did miss the coffee girls
at the finish line though.) Good on the organizers
for attracting more runners and some really fast
ones too. It shows you are making continual progress.
Thanks to Vince and Lise for the free lodging;
just like the elites eh!!. Crap man my blog sounds
like the Grammy Awards. "I would like to
thank God, my mother, my sister, my best friend,
bla bla bla..."
Hope to see some of you at W.I.N

I DID IT!!!!
YAHOOOOOOO!!!
I cried when I crossed the finish line....hugged
Doug, then my dad and brother and my 3 friends
waiting for me - it was totally awesome!!! One
of my friends was "stalking" me...so
every once in awhile she'd show up and cheer me
on! It was sooo great!
And of course while I wanted to finish....I had
a little time goal in the back of my head... 2
1/2 hours. I had done 20 km two weeks prior during
training in 2 1/2 hours and yesterday I did my
21km in 2:25:37 (and screw that gun time...this
is chip time - took my long enough to get from
the back of the pack to start the chip timer).
But even the gun time was before my goal!
And my legs were sore afterwards and still a little
achy today but nothing stretching won't cure.
BUT my baby toe on my right foot is killing me...I
got a soaker and after that I guess my shoe started
rubbing on my toe. Not a pretty sight...but this
too will get better!
Thanks for your encouragement and tips during
my training to get to me to my first half marathon!

From Greg Bond
(Greg paced Mike Ovens
through the 1/2 marathon as Mike is visually impaired)
Vince, another good job ...... everything seems
to get smoother every year.
Mike was pleased with his run. We had only a
few minor problems and he
bettered his PB by 3 minutes, so he was very pleased.
His family got to
cheer him on too, so they were equally pleased.
The other runners were gracious and gave us room
when we needed it, but I
think, with the exception of walking through a
few water stations, we were
not in anyone's way.

Former
Sudbury Rocker!! Martin Parnell in Marathon Drive
 |
By: ctvbc.ca
Date: Sunday May. 2, 2010 6:03 PM PT
One of the participants at the BMO Vancouver Marathon
Sunday morning was Martin Parnell, a semi-retired Cochrane,
Alta., resident on a mission of charity and physical endurance.

| The marathon was Parnell's 74th of 2010, and he hopes to
run another 176 before the year is out. The 54-year-old, who
was dubbed the ‘Marathon Man' by his hometown newspaper,
is trying to raise at least $250,000 for children's charity
Right To Play.
The organization uses sport and physical activity to help
hundreds of thousands of kids, many from the most disadvantaged
parts of the world, to build core development skills.
With his wife's blessing and his doctor's approval, Parnell
set out on January 1 – not exactly peak jogging season.
"It was -30, it was absolutely brutal. It stayed like
that for a month and a half," he said. "I had
a hydration pack and several times it was frozen solid,
so I had no water. That's not good."
He runs five marathons a week from Sunday to Thursday and
rests for two days. Along his journey, Parnell is also visiting
about 50 schools to spread awareness.
"The schools are the highlight of the whole thing.
They understand what I am trying to do," he said. "Some
give me 25 cents, 50 cents to help the kids. It's amazing.
They are amazing."
Early on, Parnell injured a muscle in his shin. He took
about two and a half weeks off to recover before forcing
himself back to work by walking eight marathons.
But now he's back on his feet. If he completes his quest,
he will have run 10,550 kilometres this year – the
equivalent of climbing Mount Everest five times.
He's got a long way to go, and so does his fundraising drive.
Parnell says he's raised $22,000 so far.
"I sure want to increase that number," he said.
"It's a huge positive thing for the kids."
More information is available at Parnell's website.
