St. Patty's Day Prediction Run

Sunday March 14, 2010

The Sudbury Running Room held it s first ever St. Patty's Day 5k Prediction Run on Sunday. The race was held as the goal run for 5k and 10k clinic trainees but all comers were invited to attend the free event. The rules were simple. Predict your overall time and the runner who comes closest to their predicted time wins. And NO WATCHES ALLOWED.

Andrew Breckon was the fastest runner by far but only managed a 9th place as he misjudged his abilities by a bit too wide a margin. Leave the guessing to the younger and the real calculating to the experienced as grand master runner Tay Wilson came within 1 second of his predicted time. Lise Perdue and Jessica Valiquette vied for second and third. Lise had a 10 second differential and Jessica added only 1 more second. The rest of the group learned that prediction running is not quite the same as regular events. They vowed to be more competitive next time out.

West Kelowna Rocks!! Update

We are doing very well in West Kelowna. Tawnecia & I have both kept up our running and have competed in a variety of races both on the road and on trails. All of the races have been hilly and challenging, but the scenery has been stunning and the volunteers have been top notch.

We started this year's racing season with the Starting Block 10K in Vernon, BC. Tawnecia had a great race and finished in 51:29. Our next race was in Fort Langley, BC called the Historic Half (referring to the wooden fort which served as the start and finish area). Tawnecia participated in the 10K which she finished in 51:57.4, and I completed the half marathon. It was a tough race after staying up late the previous night to enjoy the Vancouver 2010 Olympic partying on Robson Street - what a fantastic time celebrating the athletes and demonstrating our Canadian pride!

The next major event was the honour I had to participate as a torchbearer (photos here)in the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games which was exciting, inspirational and made me exceptionally proud to be a Canadian. The life experience made me reflect on the power of the symbolic flame to bring people together and appreciate this unique once in a lifetime event. The energy of the public and the excitement of the children at seeing the Paralympic flame was amazing!

It is incredible what the Paralympic athletes are able to achieve with their spirit, dedication, courage, skill, strength, teamwork and willpower. I hope we are all able to appreciate the efforts and friendship of the Paralympic athletes from all over the world, and take pride in Canada's support of the Paralympic Winter Games.

We wish the Sudbury Rocks!! all of the best at Around the Bay, and congratulations to all of those taking part in the Boston Marathon in 2010.

Cheers,
Tawnecia & William

You don’t have to live in Sudbury to join the Sudbury Rocks marathon
Monday, February 22, 2010

Vince Perdue wants to make a big dent in diabetes prevention, and has been doing so through Sudbury Rocks!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes. May 2, 2010, will mark the marathon’s fifth year in raising funds to support the Canadian Diabetes Association.

The Sudbury Rocks Running Club and the Canadian Diabetes Association entered into a partnership in 2004, working together to create the Sun Run for Diabetes. Since then, the two groups have maintained a close relationship, expanding the Sun Run for Diabetes in 2005 into the Sudbury Rocks!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes, Northern Ontario’s largest competitive running event.

Vince during a trail run across Laurentian Lake in Sudbury

Vince, 59, has been actively involved with the marathon since its inception and has been the event’s race director for the last two years. As race director, it’s his responsibility to ensure every aspect of the event runs smoothly, from liaising with sponsors and ensuring event day logistics are in order to pre-event preparation, including managing the website.
When asked why the Canadian Diabetes Association was chosen as the charity of choice, Vince says “it’s the only charity we see that fits the profile of activity making a difference.” Vince also has a personal connection with diabetes, as he has close family members living with the chronic disease and some who have experienced complications.

The event offers a challenge not only to Sudbury residents, but to everyone. Last year more than 1,500 participants from across the country took part in the marathon, including more than 300 volunteers. The event has raised more than $150,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association. The goal for 2010 is to have 2010 participants and raise $75,000.

“Individuals young and old have said participating in the marathon is a life-changing experience,” says Vince. “For the event organizers, it’s important for us to put a run in the face of people, so they can see that there is a path to make a change and a positive difference.”

When Vince is not busy preparing for Sudbury Rocks, he makes time for a run everyday. He also enjoys travelling with his wife, and just spending time outdoors.
