Rocks!! Off Road Adventures

Looking at the above picture could give an odd impression of what is going on within the ranks of the Sudbury Rocks!!. At first glance you might perceive at least one Ninja, and a couple of bandits out in the cold. Not really so. This winter has been truly unusual to date and the lack of deep snow has allowed us to run on trails normally reserved for snowshoes only. In the last few weeks we've been fortunate enough to run on most of the lakes in the city area plus their connecting trails. A highlight for me was a moonlight run across 4 lakes. St Charles Lake, Middle lake, Hana Lake and Robinson Lake are all in close proximity to each other and are connected by walking/snow machine trails. The moon reflecting off the snow made conditions appear almost like daylight. This is an excellent route from the Running Room in Sudbury as all those lakes and trails can be explored in about 75 - 90 minutes. Our other runs have taken us on and around Lake Ramsey and to the top of one of the higher hills in the area, Mt. Ramsey at 990 ft (app 300m). We then took in the Laurentian Conservation area including Laurentian Lake, Bennett Lake, Nepawhin Lake and the University trails. Click on the photo for more pics.

If the weather holds we'll keep on exploring the off roads. Keep on running All!

Vince

Caroline is the daughter of Rocks!! member Klaus Ehrhardt

Feb 07, 2010By: Sudbury Northern Life Staff

Record-breaking athlete Caroline Ehrhardt, of Espanola High School, has received a prestigious honour in recognition of her excellence in academics and athletics – a full four-year scholarship to attend the University of Oklahoma.

“This scholarship, valued at more than $100,000, will enable one of our star athletes to continue to pursue her dreams,” Rainbow District School Board chair Tyler Campbell said. “We are certainly very proud of Caroline Ehrhardt for her outstanding achievement.”

Ehrhardt will sign a Letter of Intent officially declaring herself as a University of Oklahoma Sooner for the 2010-2011 school year during a special ceremony at the school on Feb. 9, at 1:45 pm.. The ceremony will take place during the half-time break in the Espanola High School senior boys’ basketball game versus Elliot Lake.

“The entire school will be involved in the celebration to honour Caroline,” Principal Martin Punkari said. “Not only is Caroline an exceptional athlete, she is also an exceptional student. Last semester, she had the second highest average among Grade 12 university level students at our school. She is an all-round student.”

Ehrhardt list of athletic accomplishments includes Canada's national junior triple jump champion (2009), national youth triple jump champion (2008), double OFSAA gold medallist (long jump, triple jump - 2008, 2009), OFSAA senior girls triple jump record holder, Canadian interscholastic record holder for the triple jump, and national scholastic indoor championships triple jump champion (New York City, 2009).

“Caroline’s success is also a tribute to the teachers at Espanola High School who have supported her over the past four years,” Director of Education Jean Hanson said. “As the school’s track and cross-country running coach, David Gallant has played a key role in nurturing Caroline’s athletic abilities, watching each and every win with pride. We all join together in congratulating Caroline Ehrhardt for having earned this impressive scholarship.”

Run Club Update

Happy Chinese New Year on Sunday - Gung Hai Fat Choy!

Welcome to the year of the Tiger, it wouldn’t seem that last year was Tiger’s year but who knows what this year will hold.

For us at the Running Room it means that we will run and train with the ferocity of a Tiger, or (to steal from a great boxing movie) to have the eye of the Tiger.

Don’t forget this Sunday’s Valentines Day Potluck – come and hang out with your fellow runners and much on some snacks and sweets, but don’t forget to leave some for me! Here is my Valentine’s Day tip: bring your ‘significant other’ to walk or run with you, and to enjoy the Potluck with!

Enjoy the sunny but cold weather this week and starting Friday, Feb 12th – GO CANADA!!!!!

We are still looking for volunteers to assist with Hypothermic Half on February 21st. See Gina or Neil if you are able to assist.

Running Motivation

“Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they’ve got a second” William James

“I go running when I have to. When the ice cream truck is doing 60.” Wendy Liebman

“No one ever drowned in sweat” Unknown

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just soft people.” Bill Bowerman

Local Running Room Events

Potluck - February 14th – Bring in a dish during Sunday Run Club and come on in after your run to enjoy some dishes from your fellow runners and walkers. This is a good time for those who are thinking about joining a clinic to talk to other members and see what we are all about.

Hypothermic Half Marathon – February 21st,

St. Patty’s Day Fun Run – Join us at the store for a fun run or walk – 5K or 10K.

Health Fair – Sunday, April 17th. Come on in to the Store and meet some local businesses involved in health and well-being.

Happy Trails!
