Rocks!! at Robbie Burns

Sudbury Rocks Robbie Burns

Rocks!! members Laurel Toth (Little Current), Steve Fessenden (Sudbury) and Tim Uuksulainen (North Bay) donned kilts on Sunday in Burlington. Tim's son Kiefer was there as well and all were celebrating the birthday of Scottish poet Robbie Burns by running an 8k road race. Everyone that registers receives an InstaKilt. The less than hardy participants wear leggings and other stuff. A true Scot would be donning the traditional kilt only.

The race is very popular. This year there were 825 finishers in the run and 117 in the walk.

When you hear the bagpipes it's time to line up and that's when all the Celtic bragging stops and the truth starts.

The race is competitive with many running clubs as well as individuals vying for top honours. Steve Fessenden provides the Rocks!! race report below.

Sudbury Rocks Robbie Burns - by Steve Fessenden

Sudbury Rocks runners Laurel Toth and Steve Fessenden made the trip south to Burlington to run the 30th annual Robbie
Burns 8km race. The race conditions were ideal as the temperature was 2C, the roads were dry and the winds light.
Each runner was provided with an InstaKilt which many runners wore to honour Robbie Burns. They were also many
real kilts and other creative costumes present in the field of over 1000 runners and walkers. Laurel met her race goal
of 34 minutes by completing the 8km in 33:59 good for first place in her age group and 17th out of the 470 female
runners. Well done Laurel! Steve ran a PB of 31:58 and finished 2nd in his age group although his chip time was 7
seconds faster than the official gun time winner. The winner of the race was Saheed Khan of Toronto in a time of 25:19.
The top female runner was Kristen Duchene of Brantford in a time of 28:21. The event was well organized and featured
unique finishing medals, good post race food and an eventful awards ceremony. The crowd was
treated to a show as the most creative costumes were awarded. The crowd had a chance to see what "real men" wear
under their kilt. The winner certainly ran free!

Volunteers Needed

Laura Bewick, January 26, 2010

We made it to 2010 and right now I am getting things going again for the 2010 Summer Games Triathlon. This race is a great opportunity to showcase Sudbury's great triathlon community.

The race is going to run Thursday August 12, 2010 with races running at 9am, 11am and 2pm or 3pm. This is a week day, so I encourage everyone who can, to plan ahead as some who would like to help may have to take a vacation day.

We are starting out looking for volunteers. If you are interested please read on.

We need both general volunteers and OAT officials which I will be training for this event!

All volunteers/officials need to sign up ASAP at www.2010ontariosummergames.ca.

I am looking for at least 5 people who are either trained officials with OAT or who would like to be trained as a triathlon official. You will be qualified as a Level One official following the course and can work at other races in Ontario. If you are interested please contact me ASAP.

For any further information please email me at laurawest08@yahoo.ca. I appreciate as much help as possible. I cannot do this alone. I know that there is still snow on the ground and people may not be thinking about the summer, but early organization will help to make the event run smoothly.

Thanks in advance and I cannot wait to hear from you. Please forward this email to anyone you feel may be interested.

Regards,

Laura Bewick - Race Coordinator
Brad Walker and Bob Jeffery, Co-Technical and Site Coordinators

Tylenol boosts endurance by blocking pain
forwarded by Tim Uuksulainen

January 26, 2010
By Alex Hutchinson

To the scientist in me, this is a really interesting study. But to the athlete and fan in me, it seems like bad news. British researchers fed highly trained cyclists acetaminophen (Tylenol, as it’s known around here) before a 10-mile time trial. It was a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The riders who were fed Tylenol cycled about 2% faster, and had higher heart rate and lactate production (i.e. they were working harder) — but their perceived exertion was identical to the placebo group’s.

To read more about the study and its implications, read this entry in Amby Burfoot’s Peak Performance blog, which includes a Q&A with one of the researchers. The basic interpretation is simple: Tylenol blocks pain, and pain is what makes us slow down during long races. This is an important scientific result, because it sheds light on a red-hot debate about the nature and origins of fatigue. The authors of the study view their results as supporting the “central governor” theory, which argues that our brain subconsciously makes sure that we never let our body get too close to its absolute limits.

This, of course, is not the main message that many athletes will take from the study. A 2% performance boost is nothing to sneeze at for the well-trained athlete, so I expect that many athletes will start experimenting with Tylenol in training and racing. Is this dangerous? I don’t really know. (Gretchen Reynolds wrote an interesting article last summer about the risks athletes incur by overuse of NSAIDs like ibuprofen; Tylenol is a different class of drug.) But I have to admit: whenever I see a study of a potentially performance-enhancing pill, I cheer when the results come up negative, because (in my view) it keeps the sport a little simpler.

Track North/LU Indoor Track
Fred Foot Invitational Results'10

January 23, 2010, Toronto, ON

Track North and the Laurentian University Lady Vees Indoor Track team travelled to the University of Toronto this weekend to compete at the Fred Foot Invitational.

Competing against teams from University of Toronto, Queen's, McMaster, RMC, Laurier and various track clubs, the Lady Vees qualified for three OUA events and collected five medals including 2 silvers and 3 bronze.

Leading the Lady Vees was Emma Tallman (Mindemoya, ON) who was the 1st university runner in the 1000m (2nd overall) and 3rd in the 600m. Tallman's times of 2:57.23 and 1:37.36 were personal bests, rank her in the top 10 in the OUA and qualify her for the OUA championships in both events.

Also impressive was Maggie Robins' (Port Perry, ON) 3rd place finish in the 1000m with a time of 3:01.36. The time qualifies Robins to run at the OUA Championships at the end of February. Stephanie Flieler (Trenton) ran to a 2nd place finish in the 3000m time with a time of 11:02.71.

Tallman commented, "I felt really strong and it's good to know I can run a solid time like I did in my 1000m despite running most of the race alone. I'm starting to figure this distance out and I look forward to being pushed to faster times as we approach the OUA championships."

"Emma continues to impress," commented Darren Jermyn, assistant coach of the Lady Vees. "She ran aggressively in the 1000m and it led to a seven-second personal best and a top 10 OUA ranking. Then she ran another personal best in the 600m with very little recovery time."

Next up for the Lady Vees is the York University Open Classic on Saturday, February 5th.
