Baumann
lights up Sudbury in torch run
Posted By LARA BRADLEY, THE SUDBURY STAR
|

Alex Baumann |
At least
6,000 people turned out on an extremely cold Saturday morning
to watch gold medalist Alex Baumann jog the Olympic torch
300 metres to light a cauldron on a massive stage set up on
the corner of Brady and Minto streets.
As he passed through the crowd, Baumann gave rows of mittened
hands high fives.
A bitter wind made the -23 C temperature feel more like
the -30s.
While at least one participant was carried away on a stretcher
by paramedics, the cold did not diminish the spirit of the
crowd, many dressed in white and red, waving flags, beating
tambourines and hollering loudly for the former Sudbury
swimmer, who won two gold medals for Canada at the 1984
Los Angeles Olympics.
"It was a fantastic experience to get out there, to
be in my home town," said Baumann, 45.
"Certainly to run up to the
stage was exhilarating. Something I'll never forget. I never
really realized how much the torch relay could unite Canadians.
It makes me proud because, ultimately, on Feb. 12, I think
our team is ready and our country is behind our athletes."

More than 40 people carried the torch starting in Onaping
Saturday morning and ending on Regent Street in Sudbury.
Rocks!! member Ian Harris got his opportunity in Chelmsford
and Running Room Run Club member Thomas McGibbon went
further afield to Elliot Lake to be part of the historic
event. Ian writes about his experience:

Rocks!! member, Ian Harris in
Chelmsford |
Hi, my name is Ian Harris,
one of the newest members of The Sudbury Rocks Running
Group. On January 2nd I had the great honour of
carrying the Olympic Torch as it passed through
this area. My group consisted of eight torchbearers,
two in Onaping, three in Dowling, and three in Chelmsford.
The scene was electric, everyone in the Olympic
spirit. I was the last runner in Chelmsford . I
was wearing a picture of a girl named Kelly Scheuer
over my heart in memory of her. She passed away
in 1989 from cancer. Words cannot describe the feeling
when my torch was lit. I was overcome with emotion.
Only running 300 meters seemed like a kilometer.
After we were done, as cold as it was that day I
made my way down to Tom Davies Square and to the
end of the route on Paris Street. One of the most
memorable things for me that day will be the almost
200 people that asked to have their picture taken
with the torch, many of them small children. I was
more than happy to share my part in history with
everyone. This will be a day that I will remember
and cherish forever. Thanks.

The cold and wind did not deter about
120 enthusiastic Resolution Runners from competing in their
first 5k of the year. And for some it was their first run ever.
Running Room Sudbury and the YMCA did an excellent job of hosting
and running the event with lots of support and marshaling along
the route and some snacks and draw prizes later.
Congratulations to Steve Odjig from Manitoulan
Island for winning the event and to Emily Marcolini for her
first place overall in the Female category.
