What does diabetes look like?

I walked into a local business to pick up a Canadian Diabetes Association coin box and a man commented, “You don’t look like you have diabetes.” I replied by asking him, “What does diabetes look like?” Do you know the difference between Type1 and Type 2 diabetes? What is the face of a person living with diabetes?

There are 2 main types of diabetes: Type 1 is usually diagnosed in children and adolescents and occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that ensures body energy needs are met. Type 2 occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not effectively use the insulin that is produced. Type 2 usually develops in adulthood, although increasing numbers of children in high risk populations are being diagnosed.

Did you know? Diabetes can result in a variety of complications such as: heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease, erectile dysfunction, nerve damage, and limb amputation.

By 2010, over 3 million Canadians will have diabetes. It costs $13.2 billion each year and costs will rise to $19.2 billion by 2020.

The SudburyROCKS!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes offers a challenge not only to Sudbury residents, but to everyone. The event includes a marathon, which is a Boston Qualifier and new in 2009 a Team Marathon Relay, where teams of up to 8 people will complete the full 42K marathon. The event features a full slate of 6 events: full marathon, half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and 1 km for walkers and runners of all abilities.

SudburyROCKS is fighting diabetes, helping improve the lives of people living with this disease, and helping Canadians learn that diabetes is a major health concern. The goal for our 5th annual event on May 2, 2010 is to have 2010 participants and raise $75,000 – and we will do it with your support.

You don’t have to be an athlete to fight for this cause and this fight needs you www.sudburyrocksmarathon.com to register NOW!

Tallman, Villanova - NCAA Cross Country Champions

Mindemoya's Kaitlyn Tallman is on the far left

Track North's Tallman and Villanova Wildcats Crowned NCAA Champions
Terre Haute, Indiana, Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Sudbury Track North Athletics Club's Kaitlyn Tallman, a senior at Villanova University, captured the team gold medal today at the NCAA Division I Women's Cross-Country Running Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Tallman, from Mindemoya, along with her teammates scored 86 points (low score wins), beating 2nd place Florida State by a 47 point margin. The University of Washington, who were ranked 1st all year, finished 3rd, 100 points behind Villanova.

Tallman commented shortly after her race, "It's an unbelievable feeling. It's still sinking in. We are all so excited and we can't stop crying because we worked so hard all year to put ourselves in a position to win and we did it. Personally, I didn't have my best race but at the end of the day its a team sport and I'm so proud of the girls on this team."

Tallman finished 84th in a field of 255 of the highest caliber runners in the NCAA.

Tallman's Track North coach, Darren Jermyn, commented: "What an amazing day for Kaitlyn and the entire Track North community. We cannot be any happier for her and her teammates at this moment. She has gone through so much over the past several years, from being an OFSAA gold medallist to really struggling to stay injury free and running to her full potential. The coaching staff at Villanova have done an outstanding job developing Kaitlyn into a national level runner and we are excited to see what she does next. Seeing her holding the championship trophy on national television after the race will be with me for years to come."

Click here to see some video highlights of the women's NCAA race, including some footage of the Villanova team (including Kaitlyn Tallman) at the end. You'll have to sit through a brief commercial first (and the video quality isn't great - but it's exciting!)

10 DAYS LEFT UNTIL THE SANTA SHUFFLE!!

But first, a bit a about the Salvation Army…

“Just like Santa, The Salvation Army takes on big challenges.” The gifts they give to vulnerable people include hot meals, warm place to sleep, affordable housing, anti-poverty initiatives, elderly assistance, hospice care and addiction recovery programs.

Homelessness is not a choice. Salvation Army Shelter and Emergency Services here in Sudbury provides support, encouragement, and advocacy for those in need.

As the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in Canada, The Salvation Army provides unprecedented support to society’s most vulnerable.

1. Social and community service programs focus on nurturing the capacities, skills and strengths of individuals rather than just meeting their needs.

2. With the public’s generosity, in one year in Canada:

The Salvation Army provided 6,300 shelter, addictions, detox and mental health beds for vulnerable men, women and families in Canada.
The Salvation Army served 2.1 million meals.
The Salvation Army assisted 994,000 persons with food, clothing or practical assistance
Poverty is an ongoing and deepening problem in Canada, affecting nearly 3.5 million Canadians today, 800,000 of them are children. Poverty is at the root of many of the social service problems the Salvation Army sees every day – from homelessness, to substance abuse to families going without toys, food or even heating at Christmas. Help make Christmas a possibility for everyone.
