Our runs are based out of the Laurentian University's Athletic Building located on Athletic Building Rd. off of South Bay Rd. Runners meet in the main lobby.

We depart at 12:00 pm sharp on Monday to Friday.

Mondays are usually speed days. We may do intervals or something longer depending on the participants. Sometimes we do tempo or pace runs later in the week.

The Saturday run is our long slow one with distances varying from about one and 1/2 hours and up. We depart at 9:00 am sharp (8:00 am between June 1 and October 31).

Parking at the University is free on weekends and during the school off season (May - August). At other times there is paid meter parking .

We also participate in the Running Room 'Run Club Practices' on Wednesday at 6:00 pm and on Sunday at 8:30 am.

                  Niagara Results

October 25, 2009

Sudbury and area locals represented us in 4 Niagara events on Sunday. We had participation in the 5k, 10k, 1/2 and marathon. Two individuals placed first in their age groups - Ben Haner in the 15 and under 5k and Paul Washchuk in the 65-69 half marathon. Good going guys and everyone else.

Comeback Kid: The return of age-group superhero Ed Whitlock

If you are approaching 30 or middle age or a slightly older time and think your best days are behind you and you just might have to stop running soon, take a read about Ed Whitlock. You just might get a new dose of inspiration.

By Michal Kapral Canadian Running Magazine

Septuagenarian sensation Ed Whitlock has quietly nursed a painful case of knee arthritis over the past two years. Now, the 13-time age-group world record holder is back in the racing scene despite one doctor telling him it was “game over” for running. How do you mount a comeback at the age of 78? Michal Kapral visited Whitlock at his home in Milton, Ont. to find out.

It’s an overcast summer day in a quiet neighbourhood in Milton, a town of about 75,000 in the verdant Greenbelt at the foot of southern Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment. An elderly man wearing a brown T-shirt and blue shorts jogs tentatively along the sidewalk on the western edge of town, and after about 50 metres, he stops to walk. An outsider driving past might be impressed to see this frail-looking man with a shock of jaw-length white hair gamely trying to get some exercise. Runners would instantly recognize the figure of Ed Whitlock, whose 13 age-group world-record performances at distances from 1500m to the marathon put him on par with the top handful of elite runners in the world.

After taking most of 2008 off from running because of an arthritic right knee, the 78-year-old is carefully building up his mileage in a bid to regain his form, despite one doctor telling him last year that he would never run again. “This is what I do now,” he explains about his new warmup routine, before resuming a slow run a few blocks from his house. He continues alternating walking and jogging until we cross through the gates of Evergreen Cemetery a few minutes later. Two young women running towards us look over at Whitlock with big smiles. As they pass, one of them points over and says, “Hey, you’re famous.” Read all the story here...

TRAINING TIP:

Don't get hit by cars!!! D'uh...right???? Yet I still see so many people walking and running without taking safety into account. PLEASE make sure if you run/walk on the road you are FACING traffic so YOU can get off the road when cars approach. Try to run/walk on roads that are a little less traveled, especially if you are out during peak traffic times. Whether you are on a busy road or a quiet road run/walk one or two people wide (not 5 or 6) this is unsafe and discourteous. Finally, WEAR HIGH VISIBILITY gear. Bright colors, reflective material, flashing LED lights, headlamps...looking like a Christmas tree is better than lookin! g like road kill!
