As a survivor,

from
family and friends. Many thanks go to the organizers
and volunteers
for another great event.
The Run for the Cure will help

Almost 1,300
Sudburians raised $222,000 for Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation
Sudbury, Ontario, October 4, 2009 – The 12th year
of the CIBC Run for the Cure in Sudbury took
place today at Cambrian College. Approximately 1,278 people
participated in today’s event and organizers are
proud of the estimated $222,000 raised today. The CIBC
Run for the Cure took place in 56 communities across the
country today with a goal of raising money to find a cure
for breast cancer.
“In preparing for today, I reflected on what I
thought would be the best news that I could possibly give
you….. and then it hit me! Dr. Jean-Philippe Pignol.,”
said Run Director Manuela Vairo. “He made a presentation
to all of the Run Directors across the country earlier
this year. What he had to say brought us all incredible
joy and an immense sense of accomplishment.”
Dr. Pignol is a Professor of Radiation Oncology &
Medical Biophysics at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
at the University of Toronto. His research is extending
the lives of cancer patients while also improving their
quality of life while undergoing treatment.
Mary Katherine Coady, Run Director, also talked about
advances in cancer research at a local level. “Dr.
Amedaeo Parrasanti and research assistant Kerry Reid at
the Northern Cancer Treatment Centre at the Sudbury Regional
Hospital are working on breakthrough treatment with gene
therapy to try to understand why some tumours fail to
respond to chemotherapy drugs after previous success with
that medication. They are also working on customizing
gene therapy for medications almost like a building a
drug specifically for an individual patient.”
Each year, event organizers find a way to celebrate breast
cancer survivors who are taking part in the event. “They
are living proof that what we are all doing here today
is saving lives!” said Vairo. At the centre of the
gymnasium at Cambrian College, a tropical island hut,
dubbed “Survivor Island” distributed pink
t-shirt and gift bags to the breast cancer survivors that
participated in the 2009 CIBC Run for the Cure.
This year, the Sudbury Run Site was honoured with the
presence of Sylvia Scarsella, Coordinator, Allocations
& Health Promotion Coordinator with the Ontario Region
of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Sylvia shared
her appreciation for the efforts that all volunteers and
participants make to creating a future without breast
cancer.
Danielle Emond-Theriault, breast cancer survivor, spoke
during the opening ceremonies and shared her story as
a survivor and her participation in the Run for the Cure
to benefit all women. As a woman diagnosed with breast
cancer, even though she lives a completely healthy lifestyle,
Emond-Theriault talked about how she handled the diagnosis
and subsequent treatment. She took the opportunity to
encourage all women to take control of their health. “Get
tested! I had asked my family physician about 5 years
ago if I should have a mammogram and she said there really
was no need since I live such a healthy lifestyle and
there is no history of breast cancer in my family. Had
I insisted, I may not have had to go through what I went
through.”
Manon Miron, who represented title sponsor CIBC at the
event, said “Since 1992, CIBC employees and volunteers
have helped raise a significant $19 million for the Foundation.”
At 10 a.m., the air horn sounded to signal the start
of the 2009 CBCF CIBC Run for the Cure and by shortly
after 11 a.m., the last walkers were crossing the finish
line. Breast cancer survivors received a flower when they
crossed the finish line, resulting in several emotional
moments.
During closing ceremonies, several awards were presented
to teams and individuals who raised the most money (see
attached Award Winners list).

Sunday October 4, 2009
The third annual Mindemoya Thunder Fun Runs was a great
success despite an awful weather forecast and a scheduled,
Island-wide power-outage. The event is a fundraiser for
the local minor hockey association and once again has
injected some much needed funds into the coffers. People
pulled together to have a generator for hot coffee and
chili and a barbecue for everything else. In total, 73
people from as far away as Sudbury completed the 2 and
5k events with a few eager lopers running in both races.
High school students Evan Becks and Michael Niven won
the 2k and 5k distances respectively. If you want updates
for next year's race why not join the Mindemoya Thunder
Fun Run Facebook page.

Rocks!! member Ken
Stubbings runs his 6th County Marathon
Our Cobourg Rock!! Ken Stubbings has adopted
the County Marathon as his home event and has ran it from
the very beginning. In the very first run in 2004 Ken
got special attention. CTV was a major sponsor that year
and they televised the full event paying special attention
to the first 3 placed runners. Ken was lucky - and faster
then. He placed 3rd overall and had a motorcycle and camera
escort for most of the race. Ken still does well. His
times and placing have slid a bit but he claims it's still
his favourite run. His latest effort was proves he's still
on form.

Edward County, - Cheers

An upside of the economic downturn
was revealed Thursday in the form of trail building.
Coming it at a budget of about $500,000, the Ramsey Lake
Path is an expensive two kilometres to build, but, then
again, it's expected to provide safe passage to thousands
of students, residents and visitors.
"Concern for public safety is the issue that prompted
Rainbow Routes to initiate this project," said Judy
Courtemanche, vice-president of the Rainbow Routes Association.
This is the first phase in the Rainbow Routes' plan to
link the university with the downtown, she said.
Phase two will involve fixing the area off the Nelson Street
bridge, making it easier for walkers and bikers to navigate
Elgin Street.
Some beautification of the upper portion of Elgin might
also be part of phase two to make the area more inviting.
Describing it as "small, but mighty non-profit,"
Courtemanche said the Rainbow Routes' crew of seven would
begin building the trail that day with the hope of finishing
it in March.
The association was able to tap into government stimulus
spending money through the Trans Canada Trail Foundation,
which put $246,000 toward the project and the National Trails
Coalition, which contributed $100,000.
The rest of the money will come from the Greater Sudbury
Economic Development Corp., as well as the Ministry of Training
Colleges and Universities.
"This particular event focuses on the movement of
people though our city," said Mayor John Rodriguez.
"Get people out of cars onto bicycles and onto their
two legs. It's extremely important that this community become
a people place."
Why so expensive? Well, the south side of Ramsey Lake Road,
starting at the Paris Street intersection and ending at
South Bay Road, is a tricky area to put a trail through
with rocks that will require blasting and water elements
to be navigated, said Rainbow Routes executive director
Deb McIntosh.
"That price, the half million, keeps going down because
we keep getting deals from local businesses," McIntosh
said.
"Originally, we had a feasibility study done to have
it done by a contractor. It came in a $1.5 million for three
kilometres paved. So, we're going to do it ourselves ...
with crusher dust and only two kilometres."
She hopes money still can be found to pave the trail so
inline skaters can use it as well.
It has been a busy year for the association. Other projects
tackled included the completion of the final two kilometres
of the Copper Cliff trail, which required a walking bridge
and tunnel, as well as the finishing of a 700-foot boardwalk
through the wetlands off Robinson Park, the part of the
trail that connects the area to Moonglo. "It's fantastic.
People are using it all the time," she said.
"We also finished a little walking loop just east
of here, from Science North over to the boat launch."
