Fastest Marathon Time Run Ever On Canadian Soil:

20th Anniversary Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Shatters Course And Fundraising Records
Toronto's premier running event sets new records for men's and women's course times and raises $1.8 million for 99 neighbourhood charities

TORONTO, ON — September 27, 2009 — With over $1.8 million dollars raised, two new course records set and a sold out event, 2009 marks the most successful year in the marathon's 20 year history.

The defending men's champion, Kenneth Mungara of Kenya broke the record he set in last year's race, setting a new record for fastest marathon time ever run on Canadian soil (2:08:31.9). In the women's marathon, Amane Gobena of Ethiopia also set a new course record with a time of 2:28:31, overtaking defending champion and countrywoman Mulu Seboka over the last kilometre.

"We could not have asked for a better anniversary race," said Race Director Alan Brookes. "Today we saw the top three fastest marathons ever run on Canadian soil in the men's race, truly witnessing world class running - with the top two men's finishers coming in at record setting 2:08.

The women's race was just as exciting a finish, with a new course record of 2:28 set by Amane Gobena. Today's race has been inspiring for thousands of Torontonians and truly puts our city on par with marathons around the world."

Join Team 'Sudbury Rocks for the Cure'

I have registered a team with the help of Stephanie Koett and Maureen Moustgaard to participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday October 4, 2009 and I would like to invite all Rocks!!! members to join. This years team name is "Sudbury Rocks For The Cure". Anyone wishing to join our team can go to the www.cibcrunforthecure.com website, choose the Sudbury location and follow the instructions to register. Last year our Rocks!!! team raised a great deal of money for a cause that I'm sure has touched everyone in some way or other. It would be great if we could match or exceed the amount this year.

My new email address is shyawmaclean@gmail.com for anyone wishing to get in contact with me or just send me a quick email so I can add you to my address book.

Hope to see everyone on October 4!!!!!

October 12th is Thanksgiving so we will be closed. Mmmm, turkey, bean salad, mashed potatoes and gravy, yummy… I don’t know about you but I don’t think I will be running after dinner. So we had better get our training in before. All those clinics that lose a day here, remember you can add another day during the week or add another at the end of your clinic. Discuss what you would prefer with your instructors and fellow members.

October 25th we will be having a “Boo-rific” Halloween potluck following our Sunday 8:30am Practice Run. Bring along your favorite dish, a friend or two and spend some time getting to know your fellow runners and walkers. I hear a rumor that Jessica may be bringing her famous chili that everyone loved last time. Since I don’t want to poison any one with what would surely be a disastrous attempt at cooking – I will bring the fruit.

Join us for our FREE Practice Club on Wednesday at 6pm and Sunday at 8:30am. New clinics begin this month; Join the Learn to Run, 5k run or walking clinic, For Women Only, or our 10K Run or walk. LU/TNOR: Western International Results

Western International, Thames Valley Golf Course, London, Ontario

The Laurentian Women's Cross-Country running team competed at the Western International in London this weekend.

The Lady Vees squad placed 8th overall and 7th among OUA teams with a score of 200 points. Sixteen teams and 140 women took part in the race.

The Lady Vees were led by rookie Lindsay Anderson, who finished the 5km course in 19:01. She was 23rd overall and the 3rd rookie to cross the finish line.

The other scorers were Gracie Tetzlaff in 36th, with a time of 19:21; Maggie Robins, 41st in 19:27; Emma Tallman, 42nd in 19:28; and Heather Stroeder, 58th in 19:59. Stephanie Flieler in 64th, rookie Hannah McCurdy-Adams in 76th and Hilary Kilbreath in 107th completed the circuit for Laurentian.

The Lady Vees set a team record for average team time (19:27) and it was the first time the Voyageurs have had all five scorers under 20 minutes over the 5k Thames Valley course.

The level of competition in the OUA is incredibly high right now," said head coach, Dick Moss. "The good thing is, we're not far behind Windsor, and if we're competitive against these teams, we'll be competitive at the CIS-level. In fact, six of these OUA teams were in the top-10 at the CIS Championships last year and we were just ahead of McGill who tied for 10th at the CI's.

"Our team is significantly better than last year and I can see lots of potential for improvement over the next month," said assistant coach, Darren Jermyn.

Laurentian's next competition is the Geneseo Invitational in Mount Morris, New York this Saturday.

Team Scoring:
1. Guelph, 30 points
2. McMaster, 65
3. Western, 101
4. Queen's, 134
