33rd Annual Sudbury Masters Ramsey Tour

September 13, 2009

The 33rd annual Sudbury Masters Ramsey Tour 5k and 21.1k roadraces were held this Sunday at Laurentian University. The 5k is gently rolling with one sharp but short incline. The half marathon on the other hand is anything but gentle. The first 8k takes runners on a very hilly course around the south end of Ramsey Lake through the Nickel District Conservation Area where they eventually get to gently rolling terrain on Bancroft Drive. Good runners employ the 8k from Bancroft to the boardwalk in Bell Park at the 16k mark for making up time lost in the hills and also banking a bit of time for the finish stretch. The boardwalk has lots of sharp corners and short hills to tax a runner who has given a bit too much early. Just after 17k runners turn unto Ramsey Lake Rd for a strength sapping 1.5k upgrade. This section wouldn't be difficult if it wasn't at 17k after some hard initial hills. There's a downhill at 19k and another uphill at 20k to keep things interesting. Finally there's a relatively flat 400m to the finish line where the celebrations can begin.

This year saw perfect weather for the runners. The morning was overcast with temperatures in the low teens with only a moderate wind. There was definitely no heat stress on this day.

The event saw 98 finishers in the 5k and 47 in the 1/2 marathon. It was good to see a whole load of Nipissing runners come down from North Bay to challenge the Laurentian crowd.

Once again theSudbury Masters Running Club put on a solid event that does our community proud. Directors like Jesse Winters and Louis Moustgaard with the assistance of numerous other Masters and Rocks!! and friends all helped to ensure things were in place to assist the runners in their tasks. Of course Track North and The Laurentian Cross Country Team did a bang up job on the finish line.

Congratulations ALL!   Results Here

Carfrae and Alexander Take MuskokaCarfrae and Alexander Take Muskoka
Alexander defends title in style while Carfrae shows off her Kona fitness

Published Sunday, September 13, 2009
One year ago Craig Alexander used Subaru Ironman 70.3 Muskoka as one final tune up before his eventual win at the Ford Ironman World Championship. Today he did the same and showed everyone in attendance that he's fantastic shape as he prepares to defend his title in Kona next month. Mirinda Carfrae claimed yet another 70.3 title and also showed that she's ready to compete with the world's best in her Ironman debut in Kona.

After coming out of the water with the main group, Alexander came off the bike with swim leader Paul Matthews and Richie Cunningham and then proceeded to put together a devastating run that his two countrymen couldn't compete with, putting together an incredible 1:11:41 split over the hilly and challenging Muskoka course to take the win in a course record time of 3:58:04. Cunningham put together an impressive 1:15 split himself to claim second, while Matthews hung on for third. Brazil's Santiago Ascenco finished fourth while Ford Ironman Lake Placid champion Maik Twelsiek rounded out the top five.
After leading for the entire bike ride (she was second out of the water), Rebeccah Wassner made it to T2 just 20 seconds ahead of Carfrae, but wasn't able to hold off the 2007 Foster Grant Ironman Ironman 70.3 world champion, who ran an incredible 1:18:51 split for the run to claim the title. Wassner held on for second ahead of Kelly Couch. Fourth went to Ironman 70.3 Boise champion Magali Tisseyre while fifth went to Rebeccah's twin sister Laurel.

The Sudbury are saw numerous athletes take part in th every challenging Muskoka 70.3. Two former Sudburians both running as Pros placed very well. Wolfgang Guembel placed 8th overall and Brent Poulsen held on for 11th overall. Following hot on their heals came Lively's Buddy Green with an age group win placing 35th overall. The rest of the group all finished and most very strongly.

Join Team 'Sudbury Rocks for the Cure'

I have registered a team with the help of Stephanie Koett and Maureen Moustgaard to participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday October 4, 2009 and I would like to invite all Rocks!!! members to join. This years team name is "Sudbury Rocks For The Cure". Anyone wishing to join our team can go to the www.cibcrunforthecure.com website, choose the Sudbury location and follow the instructions to register. Last year our Rocks!!! team raised a great deal of money for a cause that I'm sure has touched everyone in some way or other. It would be great if we could match or exceed the amount this year.

My new email address is shyawmaclean@gmail.com for anyone wishing to get in contact with me or just send me a quick email so I can add you to my address book.

Hope to see everyone on October 4!!!!!
