Sudbury Sprinter Celine Loyer Robbed and Assaulted

Be Careful When Training and Watch Your Belongings

David Case

At around 2:15pm today I was training with my athlete Celine Loyer at Queens athletic Field. We had just finished doing the stadium bleachers. I was ahead of her and started walking down the stairs towards the south end football goal posts (she was still finishing her bleachers). I hear her go " COACH". I looked around and she was sprinting full throttle down the gravel track towards the north east side of the track. I saw a man on a bike and realized we were being robbed! (we had our belongings a camera, wallets, and mp3 player in a cloth bag on the stadium stairs). I sprinted towards the two. Celine jumped the guy on the bike and got him off. She and him immediately got into a scuffle and he punched her, she punched him back and got him on the ground (he was about 60 years of age, 5ft 7 and she is 5ft 3 117lbs). I grabbed him and said Celine go away and get our stuff from his nap sack.

Anyway's he got away, we called police , they came by (the idiot took off down Cypress street on his bike), we did the police statement thing about 30min, and then walked back downtown, frustrated, tired, pissed and angry that he got off with Celine's Digital camera. Anyway's we are at the ally behind Roys and are coming up on the area where Dalron is. Celine goes "Coach there he is (he's on the Days in intersection with his bike) I quickly sprinted towards Elm, yelling at Celine to call the Police. I'm sprinting downhill as he's peddling away and eventually after about 200m get him and subdue him on the ground. I keep him there until Police arrive (4 squad cars) and they arrest him. Unfortunately Celine's camera is still gone , a really nice digital camera that was given to her by her parents for Xmas. I'm reporting this with a message that people need to watch their belongings. Celine Loyer was very very brave in not just taking a punch from this guy , but taking him down even after sprinting about 90 meters to catch him on his bike. There is an official police press release. A message to all athletes to be careful when training. It's too bad that in this day and age you can't just go to a public place and feel secure and get a workout in. I've been taking my athletes to Queens Athletic Field now for over 20 years for fall training.
What kind of town is this when you can't even do a workout at a public park? I'm not liking this at ALL!

Painkillers before or during a race or workout?

September 2, 2009
By Alex Hutchinson (Canadian Running Magazine)

Gretchen Reynolds of the New York Times has a really excellent article (provided below) on the “prophylactic” use of “non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen — popping them before or during a competition, or on a regular basis before workouts, in the hopes of dulling pain or preventing subsequent soreness and swelling. It’s a must-read for everyone who does this.

In a number of studies conducted both in the field and in human performance laboratories in recent years, NSAIDs did not lessen people’s perception of pain during activity or decrease muscle soreness later… Moreover, [Indiana University researcher Stuart] Warden and other researchers have found that, in laboratory experiments on animal tissues, NSAIDs actually slowed the healing of injured muscles, tendons, ligament, and bones.

I can’t count the number of athletes I know, ranging from recreational to elite, who pop ibuprofen or equivalents on a regular “just in case” basis, hoping to avoid pain and soreness down the road. I really hope they read this article, and its conclusion:

When, then, are ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory painkillers justified? “When you have inflammation and pain from an acute injury,” Warden says. “In that situation, NSAIDs are very effective.” But to take them “before every workout or match is a mistake.”

Phys Ed: Does Ibuprofen Help or Hurt During Exercise?
By Gretchen Reynolds

Several years ago, David Nieman set out to study racers at the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile test of human stamina held annually in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The race directors had asked Nieman, a well-regarded physiologist and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the North Carolina Research Campus, to look at the stresses that the race places on the bodies of participants. Nieman and the race authorities had anticipated that the rigorous distance and altitude would affect runners’ immune systems and muscles, and they did. But one of Nieman’s other findings surprised everyone.

After looking at racers’ blood work, he determined that some of the ultramarathoners were supplying their own physiological stress, in tablet form. Those runners who’d popped over-the-counter ibuprofen pills before and during the race displayed significantly more inflammation and other markers of high immune system response afterward than the runners who hadn’t taken anti-inflammatories. The ibuprofen users also showed signs of mild kidney impairment and, both before and after the race, of low-level endotoxemia, a condition in which bacteria leak from the colon into the bloodstream.

These findings were “disturbing,” Nieman says, especially since “this wasn’t a minority of the racers.” Seven out of ten of the runners were using ibuprofen before and, in most cases, at regular intervals throughout the race, he says. “There was widespread use and very little understanding of the consequences.” Read all the article including numerous comments at the New York Times site.

Join Team 'Sudbury Rocks for the Cure'

I have registered a team with the help of Stephanie Koett and Maureen Moustgaard to participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday October 4, 2009 and I would like to invite all Rocks!!! members to join. This years team name is "Sudbury Rocks For The Cure". Anyone wishing to join our team can go to the www.cibcrunforthecure.com website, choose the Sudbury location and follow the instructions to register. Last year our Rocks!!! team raised a great deal of money for a cause that I'm sure has touched everyone in some way or other. It would be great if we could match or exceed the amount this year.

My new email address is shyawmaclean@gmail.com for anyone wishing to get in contact with me or just send me a quick email so I can add you to my address book.

Hope to see everyone on October 4!!!!!
