Will and Tawnecia's Western Adventure

The SudburyRocks!! Running Club are expanding again. This time to Kelowna B.C.

Unfortunately William Tai got caught up in the recent mining layoffs in Sudbury. Fortunately, as that door closed another opened when Will got the opportunity to work for a mining organization in northern B.C. A few weeks later all was arranged and the couple sold their house and Will's car and on Monday May 18 they boarded the 6:00 flight out of Sudbury bound for their new condo in Kelowna. Will flies to the worksite from there on a 4 day in 3 day out schedule. Tawnie, who worked as assistant manager at the Sudbury Running Room, expects to join the Running Room team in Kelowna.

Will and Tawnie have been priceless additions to our Club. They are sparkplugs with boundless energy and enthusiasm for new things. We will miss them greatly.

From the Original Club to the new Expansion Club: we wish you all the best and we look forward to seeing you on the roads somewhere soon.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR SUDBURY FINISHERS!

Celine Loyer Runs Season Best in Toronto

Toronto:
Sudbury sprinter Celine Loyer can't seem to stop the steam going these days,
the College Boreal Student placed 6th in the womens 100m at the York
University Summer Twilight Series, in a Season Best time of 12.35. Loyer is
returning to the track in Montreal at the end of the month. "My training is
going very well and the camp in Florida helped alot, I got to train with
some very talented national team members. The goal is to definitely hit sub
12 seconds and that is definitely going to happen, it's just a matter of
continuing this momentum, that's the easy part, staying healthy has been
the challenge. I'm very happy with our program right now and the way i'm
running."

The Run....Race with a History – THE 2010 ATHENS CLASSIC Marathon

By Paul Washchuk

On November 7th, 2010 the 2500 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of this run/race will take place. That is 17 months from now for those of you who might be interested in planning to attend this historic event. Although approximately 4500 runners participated in 2008, it is anticipated that at such a milestone the number of participants will double if not triple.

Right now a number of Sudbury runners have expressed interest in possibly being part of such an historic event and would like to know if any other members of the Sudbury Rocks Club would like to attend. We are looking to establishing a bond amongst those interested. If you would like to be part of this group, please contact me at washchuk-paul@unitz.ca

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Historians agree that a battle took place in Marathon, Greece in 490 BC whereby the Greeks who where outnumbered defeated the invading Persians. It is said that a news-bearing foot soldier by the name of Phidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the news of the victory with his last words. This was the birth of long distance running. Of all the Olympic events, the ‘MARATHON RACE’ stands out because it was born by this historic and heroic event.

The revival of the modern day Summer Olympic games held in Athens in 1896 saw the establishment of what has ever since been referred to as the ‘ORIGINAL COURSE’ of the marathon, at a distance of 42,195m from the ancient city of Marathon to the Panathiankon Stadium in Athens.

The Panathinaiko Stadium has a history behind it as well. It is the only major stadium in the world built of white marble. In ancient times, it was used to host the athletic portion of the Panathenaic Games in honour of the Goddess Athena. During the classical times the stadium had wooden seating. It was restored in marble in 329 BC and since has gone through a number of renovations and expansions. The last being for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Run Club Update

The Running Room Club Update:
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Hi everyone-

Well done to all those who are completing their training this week for the upcoming Ottawa Race Weekend! You’ve all put in some long, hard hours and now you’ll reap the benefits in having a nice, smooth race. Way to go!

Here’s a quick reminder list for all you athletes who are heading out this week:

1. shoes

2. walking / running apparel: shirt, shorts, bra (for half of us), socks

3. water belt

4. gel

5. watch / heart rate monitor / GPS

6. cap

7. bodyglide

8. timing chip

9. race number

For a last minute accessory, which I think is just the bee’s knees, check out our Race Number Belts. These are reflective elastic belts, which, rather than putting holes all over your favourite shirts, are used for your race bib. They retail at $9.99 and are a great investment for saving your clothes!

We have a new set of clinics beginning the first week of June. Jessica Guenard-Valiquette is a returning instructor and part-time staff member who always brings exceptional guidance to her clinic members. She has previously instructed the Learn to Run, For Women Only and 5K Run Clinics. Starting June 1st, she will be leading the Learn to Run Clinic, and on June 5th, she will lead the For Women Only Clinic. I look forward to Jessica’s bright personality and seeing all the fun everyone will have in their groups!

What an accomplishment for me! -- Diane Stacey
"I've been at the track & field and road races for over 12 years watching my boys run. I really never thought I could do it but have always wanted to run. I joined the Running Room Learn to Run for Ladies Only on March 31, 2003. Not only did I find out that I could do it but I found some very lasting friendships. I've done three clinics in total and I think the one that I value the most is the 1/2 Marathon. Who would have thought that I could run a 1/2 Marathon. I went to Ottawa for the National Capital with the normal jitters but on the morning of race day I felt very calm. What an accomplishment for me! Something else that really made that day very special is that Matthew, one of my sons that I've watched running for the past 12 years was living in Ottawa for the summer. Well Matthew ran me in the last 3km and that was a very emotional experience for me.
Thanks Running Room, it only proves that if you try to do something - you can".
