from Race Director, Terry McKinty:
Hi Everyone!
To all of you who braved
the early morning elements and participated in the Winterman
Marathon, Marathon Relay, Half Marathon, 19Km, 5Km and
2.5Km Run on Sunday thank you, and congratulations on
your performance.
Although the snow fall
overnight and race morning made things a little slippery
and caused some minor yucky problems, we hope your Winterman
experience was a positive one, and that you will be back
next year for Winterman II.
The inaugural Winterman lived up
to its name as snow began falling during the night and
continued well into the run. That in no way deterred approximately
800 runners from toeing the line at the Canadian War Museum.
All headed out on the 5k course - some just did it more
times than others (us marathoners completed 8+ loops).
Rocks!! members Ken Stubbings and Vince Perdue took on
the marathon. Ken came 2nd overall. Lynn Stubbings and
Lise Perdue handled the half marathon. Sudburian Peter
Yawney and his Ottawa brother tackled the marathon relay
where they placed FIRST. In adverse conditions the tough
prevail. We all had an excellent experience. Good going
Terry and thank you to the volunteers. All were top notch.
Ken writes: Hats off to the organizers
of the Winterman Marathon and Half Marathon. The day delivered
some good Canadian snow but the volunteers did a good
job at keeping the course safe and nutrients available.
Our feet and pants got wet after the snow got sloppy but
the wind stayed away. We planned and expected the snow.
After all it is a winter marathon. The 5km course which
runners looped to make up their required distance actually
made the time go faster. It was great always being able
to see other runners. The loop also made it better for
anyone to get back to shelter just in case they had to
drop out early. Lynn and I wanted something new and different.
This event delivered.
All Canadian runners should try this run, eh!!!
Thanks go to Lise and Vince for keeping us company for
another memorable run.

Congratulations to everyone and
thank you to the Running Room and all volunteers who made
the event the success it was. The aid stations and marshals
were many and spirited. One marshal who will remain anonymous
even passed out wine (there were numerous takers).

February 15, 2009: Approximately 50 skiers took part
in the 2009 Sofie Manarin Nickel Loppet. Event distances
ranged from the 1k and 2k Dairy Queen Youth Challenge
through to the 6k to 30k open events. Weather was great
with sunny skies and temperatures just below zero. The
course was a little granular as ice conditions had prevailed
during the week but the groomers did a very good job of
ensuring the tracks were set well and were safe.

Celine Loyer places
4th at Hamilton Indoor Games
 |
From the Hamilton site:
The 91st Highlanders Athletic Association presented the
84th annual Hamilton Indoor Games and Sports Festival
at Copps Coliseum on Thursday, February 19 and Friday,
February 20, 2009. Over 100 schools and sports groups
were invited. Over 2000 athletes attended the meet. Thursday
was the elementary school meet, while Friday was the secondary
school meet. Also on Friday, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm,
in conjunction with the high school finals, there were
invitational events featuring many of Canada's olympic
calibre athletes.
Sudbury sprinter Celine Loyer
had a great showing at the 84th Annual Hamilton Indoor
Games at the Copps Collesium on Friday night . Loyer placed
4th in a time of 7.06 in the womens 50m dash (6.95 in
the semi's) this is the first year Loyer did not medal
as she has finished no more than a Silver since 2007.
The competition was very very good this year with Miana
Griffiths, Olympian Tabia Charles and last years Winner
Mavis Ayippey. I encourage "everyone" to take
a look at this years results at www.coppsindoor.org
.This result will keep Celines top 10 ranking for the
50m, when they are released by athletics Canada in the
next few weeks. I believe she has had a fantastic indoor
season and we are looking forward to the outdoor season
as we head to Florida for the March break for spring training.
