February 15, 2009 Sudbury
ON
The 5th running of Running Room
Sudbury's Hypothermic Half Marathon turned out to be our
best so far. A full field of 50+ runners competed in sunny
-5ish weather with roads that were in good shape for February.
In the past we've had everything from a major snowstorm
to -30 temperatures to backsiding slush. Finally we got
a run that wasn't so hypothermic. It was great for the
participants as the Running Room provided a toque and
glove set to all registrants plus when the run was over
we were treated to a complimentary full feature buffet
at Buzzy Browns where we could eat, swap stories and flash
our finishing medals.
On the finishing side, Sudbury
Rocks!! member, Steve Fessenden was the overall winner
in 1:34:54 narrowly outkicking 2nd place finisher Russell
Wood (1:35:59). Joel Ruel was third in 1:37:55. Stacy
Haner, Rocks!! from Manitoulan Island, was first female
in 1:42:09. Lisa Stafford, Rocks!! from Sudbury, took
second in 1:45:51 and Helen Francis, Naughton, came third
in 1:47:55.
Congratulations to everyone and
thank you to the Running Room and all volunteers who made
the event the success it was. The aid stations and marshals
were many and spirited. One marshal who will remain anonymous
even passed out wine (there were numerous takers).

February 15, 2009: Approximately 50 skiiers took part
in the 2009 Sofie Manarin Nickel Loppet. Event distances
ranged from the 1k and 2k Dairy Queen Youth Challenge
through to the 6k to 30k open events. Weather was great
with sunny skies and temperatures just below zero. The
course was a little granular as ice conditions had prevailed
during the week but the groomers did a very good job of
ensuring the tracks were set well and were safe.
Official results should be available soon.

Exercise
and aging Part 1
One for the ages:
A series on aging and exercise performance
Well, it's been a while since
I've had time to lift my head and do any kind of series
on exercise physiology, having instead been confined
(happily, I might add) to current affairs in the world
of sports science and management.
However, this past week, the
following story caught my eye:
60 year
old runner from Japan run 2:36:30
Exercise
and aging Part 2
Exercise and aging:
Growing old gracefully, with speed!
Yesterday we began
a series on exercise and aging by looking at the world
records across the age categories. To remind you, here's
the graph minus the notes from yesterday:

Following the success of the first 2009 Big Training
Day, I am pleased to announce that Discomfort Zone Performance
Coaching is offering a second Big Training Day this season.
Taking place on Sunday March 8th, this one-day indoor

to share his skills and knowledge as a community coach,
20+ year veteran triathlete, and master bike mechanic.
I am also thrilled to announce that this training day
is open to both adults and young athletes (aged 10 and
up and capable of swimming 100m continuously in a pool).
Throughout the day, groups will be separated based on
age and ability for skill development, training and games
where appropriate.

Run
Club Update |
Hello everyone!
The Sudbury Resolution Run was a great success! The
weather was (finally) on our side, providing sunny
skies and -8 degree weather. Truly perfect winter
running conditions. Sudbury reached our cap of 60
runners, who enjoyed two loops around lake Nepahwin
and a delicious brunch buffet next door provided by
Buzzy Brown's Restaurant. A HUGE thank you to all
of the volunteers who cheered and directed our runners
around the course. We were extremely happy to partner
again with the Canadian Cancer Society, and look forward
to continued success of the Hypothermic Half to help
out this great charity as much as we can. We'll see
everybody next year for yet another bigger and better
Hypothermic Half Marathon!!!
Just a few notes from the store to share with everybody
this week:
New Shoes
Brooks Adrenaline: A great stability shoe for medium
to low arched individuals. A little bit of cushioning
has been added in the heel, so you'll feel a little
softer upon impact. Also made with a bio-degradable
midsole... getting these shoes is like giving Mother
Nature a hug.
Brooks Glycerine: perfect for neutral runners who
need just a touch of stability or a good stable platform
for orthotics. This shoe holds up great over the long-haul,
even for larger runners. A new outsole design (more
resilient rubber and new flex groove pattern) gives
this normal arched runner a great soft feel, especially
in the heel.
Clinics!
We have several clinics starting next week:
Learn to Run: Monday the 23rd at 6 pm
5k: Monday the 23rd at 6:30 pm
10k (walk and run): Thursday the 26th at 6 pm
For Women only: Friday the 27th at 6 pm
All of these clinics will be building up to the Sudbury
Rocks!!! race, run or walk for Diabetes on May 3rd.
If you are thinking of going in this event, don't
hesitate! Join a clinic today!
