Miami Marathon and Half Marathon By Flo Atkins

We just arrived in Miami from a 7 day Eastern Caribbean Cruise with the Run N’ Fun group (www.runtheworld.ca) which Ken and I took after I ran the Miami Half Marathon on January 25th,2009. I enjoyed running the Miami Half Marathon, but the after race cruise was fantastic. We went on the Carnival Valor. Our guest speaker for the cruise was Frank Shorter who was a gold medallist in 1972 Olympic and a silver medallist in the Montreal 1976 Olympics.

He gave several seminars and we had an organized run on the island of St Maarten with some of their local runners. It was amazing to run with Frank Shorter and the local runners. The newspaper media was there interviewing Frank and taking pictures of our running group. We all felt like celebrities. It was very hot and a very hilly 8km course, but great fun to run on the sandy beach. We also had runs on the running track on the ship. We had various social events with our running group including a Meet N Greet breakfast event in Miami to kick off the weekend, a pre-race carbo loading dinner on Saturday night before the race and Miami Mixer on the ship and many others.

Joe DeLorenzis is the travel consultant and Theresa Edmonson the running consultant who go out of their way to make this an unforgettable holiday. They are having another cruise next year after the Miami Marathon and we hope to be part of it again. Next year it’s a 7 day Western Caribbean cruise and I highly recommend this to anyone who loves to run. There were many family members who came along who did not run the marathon, but were part of the cruise holiday. Now I have to get ready to run the Sudbury Hypothermic Half Marathon run on February 15th, 2009 BRRRRR

How Clear Was My Running Trail

forwarded by Claire Warren

This is a Toronto story but maybe something for the City of Greater Sudbury runners to consider advocating for in our city.

CHRISTOPHER SHULGAN

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

January 31, 2009 at 2:48 AM EST

TORONTO — One recent Sunday morning, I headed out for a run. Because of the 10-centimetre snowfall the previous evening, the first kilometre happened over pitted frozen single-track. Also on the sidewalk were a few early-morning pedestrians – churchgoers, mostly. I came up behind one of them and slowed until I was running in place. Frustration mounting, I tried to get past and lurched into a knee-high snowbank. I stumbled, caught myself, nearly stumbled again, moved on.

Winter running tends to be full of such moments. It's bad enough that the activity forces men to wear tights. When these are paired with the bright hues that grace the jackets manufactured by Nike and New Balance, even the most masculine runner resembles a medieval harlequin – whose feet slide out from under him at icy corners, whose shoes get soaked in freezing puddles. 7th Annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar

On Saturday, February 7, the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club will be hosting our seventh annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar.

Kurt died suddenly on Tuesday, January 29, 2002. He was in his 79th year and still running competitively. He was a mentor and inspiration to most local runners and it is fitting his actions be remembered.

The Run will be very informal. There will be no set distances and it is not a race. We pick this day annually to remember someone who made a difference in the running community as we go about our normal runs. We will meet in the lobby at Laurentian University's Ben Avery Athletic Building at 9:00 am . The run will start at approximately 9:00 am and will proceed at a leisurely pace down Loach's Trail (some runners will run inside on the new 200m track). Most runners will continue around a 10k loop back to the University via Ramsey Lake Rd. and South Bay Rd. Runners are free to go whatever distance appeals to them or fits their schedule but ALL runners will be encouraged to stick together for the first few kms.

See you on Saturday.

Track North News - by Dick Moss

Laurentian Track Team Competes at the McGill Team Challenge

The Laurentian women's track team competed at the McGill Team Challenge in Montreal this weekend. Madeleine Woods returned with a bronze medal, and three Lady Vees met qualifying standards for the OUA Championships later in February.

Woods finished 3rd in the 600m dash with a time of 1:35.16 She also finished 6th in the 1000m with a season's best time of 2:57.14. That time qualifies Woods for the OUA Championship in both events and ranks her 7th in the CIS in the 600m and 10th in the 1000m.

"I'm happy with the double, said Woods, and I was surprised with how relaxed the 600m felt. I know there's lots more to come."

Also qualifying for the OUA's was rookie Emma Tallman, with a 12th place finish in the 1000m in a time of 3:04.45 Maggie Robins also qualified for the OUA's with a time of 3:04.92 Both times were personal bests.

Tallman also placed 32nd in the 1500m with a time of 5:00.70. Two other Vees competed in the 1500m. Rookie Gracie Tetzlaff, placed 36th with a time of 5:04.97 and Meghan Juuti placed 44th in 5:17.02

The Lady Vees 4 x 800m team, composed of Tallman,Tetzlaff, Robins and Juuti, placed 7th in the 4 x 800m relay with a time of 9:59.64.

With over 500 athletes and nineteen teams from six provinces, stretching from Saskatchewan to Newfoundland, the McGill Team Challenge is the largest indoor track meet in Canada. Nine OUA teams were represented.

We've been trying to decide whether Madeleine should race the 600m or the 1000m at the OUA championships this year, said assistant coach, Darren Jermyn. She looked very comfortable in 600m and with a tactical adjustment or two, will run much faster."

The Vees next meet is the York Open, next weekend in Toronto.

Penn State National Invitational - January 31,09

Track North's Kaitlyn Tallman, a junior at Villanova University ran to a personal best in the Invitational 3000m at the Penn State National Invitational at University Park, PA.

Despite a fall and bruised knee at about the 2km mark, Kaitlyn got up and charged home with a time of 9:52.74 placing 8th.

To see footage of Kaitlyn's race, go to the following link (thanks to Meghan Juuti, master-creeper).

Kaitlyn is in the blue (Villanova), in fourth place after the 1st lap, and leading the chase pack until she gets tripped).
