Laurel writes:

Upon qualifying for the Boston marathon this past September, I felt both elated at the opportunity and daunted at the task of maintaining a decent fitness level through the long, cold winter.

I needed and interim race to keep me motivated.

A seat sale, an enthusiastic friend living in Miami, and a supportive traveling companion convinced me that the ING Miami marathon on January 25th was well worth the self indulgence of a weekend jaunt south.

I was so excited for this race, I couldn’t sleep for the two nights prior. I found myself at the start corral at 5:30 a.m feeling like a zombie.

I questioned my sanity through miles 0-3

Miles 3-17 the runners high kicked-in as I euphorically floated past palm trees, blue waters and art deco homes

I felt myself losing my desired pace somewhere around mile 17

As a mantra, I rehearsed various sage advice gleaned from fellow rocks members over the past few months

I caught a second wind late in the race but it wasn’t quite enough to catch my goal finishing time of 3:25:00

Nonetheless I was able to finish the race feeling sound, a huge smile on my face, looking forward to spending the rest of the day in South beach.

Race highlights: The weather and proximity to the beach

Race complaints: Unfriendly Miami dwellers, and very poor crowd support. The last mile was virtually barren

Overall ratings:

My performance: A-

The event: B+

The Walden XC Loppet was held last Sunday at the Naughton Trails. The weather was a bit chilly at the start but never the less there were over 100 finishers who enjoyed a bowl of chile afterwards. As usual Ralph did an amazing job of grooming the trails.
