December 31, 2008 Sudbury Ontario

One hundred + runners gathered at the Sudbury YMCA at 5:00 pm on December 31 for the Running Room's 5th annual Resolution Run 5k . The temperature was nippy at -18 degrees but the skies were clear, the wind low and the footing reasonable for a winter evening walk and run.

Thank you to the 'Y' for hot chocolate and prizes, Tim Horton's and the Running Room for Tim Bits and numerous volunteers who handled marshaling and timing duties.

Congratulations to all participants. A special note of praise to our top male runner, Rob Cretzman, from the 'Y' and our top female runner, Sara McIlriath, from the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club.

See you all next December 31.

     SOUTH POLE QUEST

from 11-20-2009 Archives

In December, 2008, three world class adventurers, including ultra runner, Ray Zahab, legendary arctic explorer Richard Weber and elite adventurer Kevin Vallely will trek 1094 km., self supported, to the south pole in a goal of under 40 days. Dragging sleds of over 73 kgs. each, the team hopes to achieve what most are saying is impossible.

Ray left wife Kathy and daughter Mia behind on Monday November 17 to begin the journey to the start point in Hercules Inlet. The team have set up a website ( http://www.southpolequest.com/) where you can not only find all the details on the undertaking but also follow their journey to the Pole.

The journey to the Pole commenced from Hercules Inlet on December 5. They are well into the trek now (on Boxing Day they were at 86.24.7 degrees south). Check out the progress map and read or listen to all the blogs at southpolequest.com.

Note: Ray Zahab was the guest speaker at Sportlink Sudbury's 2007 Guts and Glory 2 event. Ray will also be the guest speaker at the pasta dinner for the May 3, 2009 SUDBURYROCKS!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes.

Run Club Update

Hi Everyone!

I hope everybody is excited for the Resolution Run and New Years Eve!

Thinking of making a New Year's resolution of your own?

Just follow these quick tips:

Be Specific and Measurable. 'Running faster' is a good goal, however, try making it more specific, like taking off 5 minutes from your 10k time - this way, you will also know when you have attained your goal.

Be Realistic. Set goals that push your limits, but are still within those limits.

Have a Timeframe. This will help you avoid procrastination and get out the door.

Make them adjustable. Even with the most organized of plans, life can sometimes get in the way. Make sure you are able to adjust your goals so they are still motivating and realistic.

Good luck with your running in 2009

While we're on the topic of goals... we have a whole new round of clinics starting the first week of January! A Running Room clinic is the best way reach your goals following a safe and proven training program while having tons of fun in a group atmosphere. Call us at the store if you have any questions at all!

Learn to Run - Monday January 5th at 6 pm
For Women Only - Friday January 9th at 6 pm

From your Running Room crew

The spike measurement will be done in a separate area near or just past the entrance. Maximum spike length is 5mm
