A record turnout approaching 15,000 people took part in this year's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, 1/2 Marathon and 5k. This Run has evolved from being a good run with some course difficulties, especially the start/finish area to the exalted position of world class status in only a few short years. A very organized starting coral system and fully revised finish chute and recovery area are just the icing on the cake. Course support - marshals, police, aid stations and entertainment - all were a class act. And I cannot forget to mention the spectators. This is Toronto where there are always some people out to support us but usually there appear to be just as many horns honking in hate. NOT THIS TIME! The crowd support was excellent all the way. And no hate horns at all!. I've been to many runs. This one left a very positive impression.

The North was very well represented in all events. I counted 12 Rocks!! and friends in the marathon, 40 in the half and 9 in the 5k.

We had a good day to run. It was a bit warm and very humid for the first 5k but then the sun started burning things off and while the temperature went a bit higher conditions actually got better and the longer runs were run in comfortable conditions.

I'm sure some of us were elated with our times, some happy, some wishing for better and some just not happy. I would say "Good on all of you". To win is toeing the start line with all that hard training behind you. Always be OK with what happens on the day. Remember you probably tried your hardest. For those elated few - FANTASTIC!! For the rest of us - "We'll be back"!!. All results here.

This already big race will only get larger in the coming years. There might even come a day for a lottery entry. For those considering being part of the Scotiabank runs next year keep an eye on registration as all events booked out this year and will do so earlier in future runs.

Start Out Easy - A Lesson Learned

by Ken Stubbings

The Scotia Bank Waterfront Marathon went far better that I anticipated. I started out with an anything under 3:10 in mind and finished with my fourth best time to date and my first ever negative split. When the coach says starting out easy is the way to go. He was right. He is always right. I hate that!!! I use to think one cannot make up lost time. Well that is not the case. (I hate when he is right!!) The day started humid, but the music bands and loads of spectators made the time slide by. The breeze picked up and the humidity lessened. All in all, one beauty of a fall day.

Hey, remember past reports from the Johnny Miles Marathon and Massey Marathon? I mentioned the running gent in the pink dress. I did not see him, but there were sightings reported. Ah we runners are a funny bunch.

It was great seeing the group again. Nice place you got there Trevor!! Congrats to Lynn, Lise, Vince, and Suzanne on your runs. And to other Rocks that I did not see.

The PEC Marathon is next. The fall colours are great to see for this run. My plan there is to finish. I am sure my Scotia Bank time will catch up with me. Oh well, you take the moments when you can.

Pacing and Drinking

by Laurel Toth

Thanks for the encouragement yesterday Vince; it was great to see a familiar and friendly face on the course. I hope Lise and yourself enjoyed your respective races.

I felt strong mentally and physically throughout my race and am happy to report I am not even sore today, despite the immediate drive back to the island.

I took your advice re: pacing myself and it served me well. Going by my chip time I was bang on at each km marker up until 30km. I unfortunately, I did not follow your advice about drinking ….I distinctly remember you telling me how to do this but for some reason I was compelled to over-drink. I drank way too much Gatorade at each water station and had to stop, getting literally sick to my stomach several times on the last 10k which slowed me down considerably.

However, I am left feeling very confident that I have leaned from this one and know I have the potential to improve my time considerably next-time.

Early Morning Run

By Stephanie Koett

There are various reasons one decides to roll out of bed at some
insanely early hour and prepare to participate in a race. Believe me
when I say I was attempting to think of all of them as I prepared to
run in the Toronto Waterfront Half marathon that was scheduled for a
7:30 am start.

It was a moderately temperate morning as I made my way to the race
site. I had decided in advance to run with the 1:45 pace bunny…..at
least at the start. I ended up striking up a conversation with
several runners that were slotted in my corral. The first 10 Km
passed quickly as I was caught up in conversation. Suddenly
remembering that I was in a race, I pulled away from the 1:45 pack.

At the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, it ended up being a
great day and an enjoyable run

Rocks!! Run Tennessee's Big South Fork 17.5 Mile Trail Run

Three of our Lady Rocks!!, the trail runners of the group, went to Tennessee last Saturday to compete in the area's Big South Fork 17.5 miler in Hawe Ridge. The park is in northern Tennessee about 75 miles (120km.) north of Knoxville. The terrain is hilly, mountainous and a bit difficult but the scenery and trails are spectacular.

The threesome, Karen Beaulieu, Monique Fournier and Christine Delahunty, all finished strong.          (results here).

They are not finished with Tennessee yet as they have a 50k trail run scheduled for next Saturday in Chattanooga.

Good luck Rocks!!

Haile Gebrselassie: 2:03:59 WORLD RECORD in Berlin

Haile Gebrselassie has broken the Marathon World Record AND the 2:04 barrier - 2:03:59. In an incredible performance, he first dealt with the surprise challenge of James Kwambai, who had the race of his life to keep Geb company all the way to the 35 km mark, and then went on to fly to the finish line and take 27 seconds off his one year old record. It was a spectacular final 12 km that did the trick, because he was more or less exactly on the pace up to the 30km mark.

For an in depth real time analysis of the race, including split times and paces of the magnificent performances read more at the website here. http://www.sportsscientists.com/2008/09/haile-gebrselassie.html

Race Report - Harry Anderson Invitational, Rochester NY, 9/27/08

The Lady Vees cross-country running team traveled to Rochester, New York, to compete in the 20th annual Harry Anderson invitational this weekend, and came back with both the individual and team titles.

Rookie Gracie Tetzlaff (Trenton) placed first, running the 5k event in a time of 18:41. She was closely followed by a strong Vees contingent that placed four runners in the top six positions. Rookie Emma Tallman (Manitoulin) placed third in 18:53, Madeleine Woods (Sudbury) placed fourth in 18:58, Maggie Robins (Port Perry) placed sixth in 19:36, with Hilary Kilbreath (Belleville) rounding out the scoring in 17th place with a 20:23. The times for all five runners were personal bests.

Laurentian's team score of 31 points placed them ahead of the University of Rochester's 56 points and Roberts Wesleyan's 73. The race included 85 runners from from eight teams, including seven Division III NCAA universities.

" This was a huge team record," said assistant coach, Darren Jermyn. "We've never had three runners under 19 minutes in the same race. Seven girls ran personal bests and our team average time of 19:19 shatters our old best-ever average of 19:55"

Other Vees runners included Katie Maziarski in 21st, Mathilde Demory in 23rd, Daniel Henry in 24th, Celeste Woods in 42nd, Stephanie Flieler in 43rd, Jessica Nanne in 50th, and Becky Van Zeyl in 61st place.

Laurentian took an early lead, moving five girls into the lead pack at the one kilometer mark. The course then wound through a section of wooded trails and by the time there was only a mile to go, Tetzlaff and Robert Wesleyan's Michelle Brandt had separated themselves from the group with Brandt leading Tetzlaff by 10 metres. Tallman and Woods were running together 10 seconds behind, followed by Robins who was making a break from her group and Kilbreath and Maziarki, who were working together a minute behind Robins.

Tetzlaff made her break with one kilometer to go, surging past Brandt, while Tallman charged hard from behind on her finishing kick, narrowly beating teammate Madeleine Woods and pulling to within five seconds of the second-place Wesleyan runner.

"The girls had a breakthrough race. We keyed off each other and really pushed each other to a new level," said Vees co-captain, Woods.

"It's a lot of fun to bring home the team trophy and four top-10 T-shirts," said head coach Dick Moss. "But the girls really deserve it. They've been absolutely hammering their workouts this year, and our rookies have been competing like seasoned vets."

Laurentian's next race is the Mustang Open in London on October 9th.
