Terry
Fox's Econoline Van Crosses Canada - 28 Years later

The 1980 Ford Econoline van used by Terry
Fox was restored by the Ford Motor Company. (Terry Fox Foundation

The 1980 Econoline Ford van that served as Terry Fox's home
and the movable headquarters for his Marathon of Hope has
been restored for a cross-Canada tour.
The van that crept along the roadways of eastern Canada
behind Fox for 143 days was shown off at Ford's Canadian
headquarters in Oakville, Ont., on May 22, 2008 for the
first time since it was found and acquired by the Terry
Fox Foundation.
The foundation plans to use the newly restored van to
once again share Fox's goal of raising funds to fight
cancer with a cross-Canada tour that started in St. John's
Newfoundland.
It commenced a new journey raising funds for cancer
research as another extension of Terry's Marathon of Hope.
Beginning on May 25th in St. John's, Newfoundland and
"driven" by Scotia McLeod the van, accompanied
by friends and family members, will traverse the country
visiting over 50 communities. Please visit the interactive
map for event
details or read the daily
blog.
The van followed Terry through Sudbury on August 4, 1980.
Twenty-eight years later on Thursday, July 31, 2008 the
van returned and Sudbury Rocks!! and Friends were honoured
and thrilled to be requested to pace the vehicle into
town.

Rocks!! and Friends Pace
Terry Fox Van through Sudbury

The Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club was honoured
this week when Terry Fox's original handler for the Northern
Ontario section, Lou Fines, called and asked if we would
consider pacing the newly restored Terry Fox van into
Sudbury as it makes its way across Canada. Our response
was a resounding YES and thank you for requesting our
support.
The van plus support staff, police and runners
all met at the Sudbury Running Room in the Cedar Pointe
Plaza in preparation for the run to Bell Park. Of note
was the lead car provided by the OPP. It was an original
1980 vintage fully restored Chevy Impala cruiser used
to lead Terry across Northern Ontario. The unit was a
great compliment to the restored 1980 Ford van.
The procession downtown was an exciting
one with 2 motorcycles leading the way followed by the
Impala cruiser, Sudbury Rocks!! and Friends, the Van and
a support police cruiser as our rear guard. There was
lots of horn blowing and cheers as we made our way to
Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in Bell Park.
I was fortunate enough to see Terry Fox
near Gravenhurst in late July 1980. The thought never
occurred to me to run a bit with him then. I'm sure pleased
that I was given the chance 28 years later to be a small
part of something that has become very big. All thanks
to a young guy who decided to try to make a difference.
AND DID!

Fight against cancer inspired
Fox to run
In 1977, Terry Fox's right leg was
amputated above his knee after he was diagnosed at age
18 with bone cancer.
On April 12, 1980, Fox dipped
his artificial foot in the Atlantic Ocean off St. John's,
and began his run to raise money for cancer research.
He ran about 42 kilometres each
day, in freezing rain, high winds, even snow, with the
now iconic van following him on the highway.
But on Sept. 1, chest pains and
breathing problems forced him to stop running at a spot
along the Trans-Canada Highway northeast of Thunder Bay.
After 143 days and 5,373 kilometres,
he announced he would have to postpone the rest of the
run, saying, "I'm gonna do my very best. I'll fight,
I promise I won't give up."
In a B.C. hospital doctors discovered
the source of his chest pains: cancer had spread to his
lungs.
In the months that followed, donations
kept coming, and $24.17 million was raised, surpassing
his initial goal.
Since that time, a further $400
million has been raised in his name.
Fox died on June 28, 1981, but
not before becoming the youngest person ever to be awarded
the Order of Canada.

The only race to run on the Golden Gate
Bridge roadway |
Rocks!! Run

| Flo
Runs the Half Marathon and Ken Racewalks The San Francisco
Marathon
It was an amazing run on the Golden Gate Bridge and
a challenge
between the high winds and the hills!!! the many hills
of the San
Francisco Marathon. Hamilton's killer hill is a baby
hill in
comparison to San Francisco's hills. I needed brakes
on my running
shoes for some of the sharp declines. It was so much
fun. They
changed the course two years ago and added some challenging
hills to
their course. We had to slow down at times just to
look at the
scenery and runners were busy not only running, but
taking pictures.
Ken Racewalked the Marathon with a time of 5:14:18
and I ran the
Half Marathon in a time of 2:30:02. The San Francisco
Marathon had
19,000 runners/walkers and was well organized. We
started in waves,
because of the Golden Gate Bridge and the narrow course.
We
finished off the race with a delicious barbecue. Now
we have
another five days to tour San Francisco and do some
serious
shopping. PS: I will never complain about Skyward
Hill again.
