Mindemoya's Run-Paddle-Pedal Triathlon was held
this Sunday on Manitoulan Island. The unique event
starts with a 5.5k run, next is the canoe and last
up is the bike. You can do it solo, pairs or teams.
I noticed a few locals and some Sudbury Rocks!! members
in the results - we have a few on the Island.
Good going all! Check
out the results here.

| North
Bay Runner Pulls Surprise of the Year
forwarded by Tim
Uuksulainen
Vince, A former
North Bay runner who is now living and training in Guelph is
on the threshold of making the Olympic team. He was good but
not a great high school runner. A rarity in Canada - a junior
who actually continues to get better as an adult. I saw him
win a 1500m in Toronto about 4 weeks ago in 3.39 - a pb for
him by 2 seconds.

Milne surprises at Harry Jerome Track Classic

Sports Athletics Canada might have expected two runners
would achieve the men's 1,500-metre Olympic standard
but no one could have predicted that 26-year-old Taylor
Milne would be one of them.
The Guelph, Ont., native beat a top-class field at
the Harry Jerome Track Classic in Burnaby, B.C., Saturday
afternoon to equal the Olympic A-plus standard of
3:36.00 and virtually book his ticket for the Beijing
Olympics.
"A couple of weeks ago I ran 3:39.00 and I did
some leading in that race, so I knew there were a
couple of more seconds there," said Milne. "I
told people I wouldn't be super surprised but I would
have to have a great race. Three and a half seconds
(improvement) is way more than I thought I had."
Grant Robison of Mountain View, Calif., was second
in 3:37.22 and Mexico's Juan Luis Barrios third in
3:37.87.
Canadian record holder Kevin Sullivan, who has run
3:35.78 this season and is already assured a place
on what will be his third consecutive Canadian Olympic
team, hung on for fourth in 3:38.40.
Sullivan had planned to lead the third lap to help
Nathan Brannen, his friend and former University of
Michigan teammate, after the designated pacemaker,
Ryan McKenzie, dropped out at 800 metres.
"Earlier in the week I talked to the meet director
and said I would rabbit at 1,200 metres for Nate to
get standard and then race whoever was still there,"
Sullivan said. "Taylor moved really well through
the last 300 metres but I couldn't respond. But all
in all, with the 800 metres race I had in Victoria
on Thursday night it's been a good weekend of work
for me."
Milne, a graduate of High Point University in North
Carolina, is originally from Calendar, Ont., a small
community near North Bay. He moved to Guelph to train
with coach Dave Scott-Thomas three summers ago.
"I am going to train for the nationals, work
on the gears and get ready for championship racing
because anything can happen," Milne said.
He and Sullivan need only to finish in the top four
at the national championships in Windsor, Ont., to
secure a place on the team. It was Brannen's fourth
time chasing the standard in as many weeks and he
admitted he was drained following his latest effort.
"I just tried hard and I feel mentally and physically
tired after going after it every week for the last
four weeks," said Brannen, the Commonwealth Games
silver medallist.
He will try one more time at the Canadian Olympic
trials.
"I think I will be fine to go back and get two
weeks training," he said. "That's the one
thing I have been lacking with racing every weekend.
I think a down week to physically and mentally get
everything right will help. If it doesn't happen at
nationals it doesn't happen. I know it's there. It's
just been too much."
Brannen, who is from Cambridge, Ont., had spinal
surgery to repair a ruptured disc on Nov. 29 last
year and missed four months of valuable training time.
His performances have been astonishing considering
his plight. On Saturday, he finished sixth in 3:38.70. |

Are
YOU ready to TRI this Summer?

2008 Discomfort Zone Summer Triathlon Clinic
July 16 - September 3, 2008
We are thrilled to announce that for the 5th straight year,
The Discomfort Zone will be offering a triathlon clinic
in Sudbury. It has been great watching this clinic grow
over the past few years, and we are looking forward to seeing
an even bigger group this year.
Open to both beginners and experienced triathletes, the
clinic starts on July 16 and go straight through until September
3rd, with the goal of completing either the Sprint or Olympic
Distance races at the Wasaga Beach Triathlon on September
6.
Clinic fees are $175, and include 8 two-hour sessions consisting
of a short talk about a tri-related topic followed by hands-on
technique instruction and a fun, challenging multi-sport
workout. Also included is a booklet packed with sport specific
skills, technique drills and handy tips and tricks that
will increase your enjoyment of the sport and give you a
leg up on the competition. Finally, each participant will
receive a sharp looking Discomfort Zone technical t-shirt
that looks great when out running or standing on the top
of the podium!
Clinic sessions take place on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm,
and will use a variety of locations throughout the city.
There are so many interesting training locales in this town;
it would be a shame not to sample them all.
One of the coolest things we noticed at last year's clinic
was how well the athletes worked together to collectively
'raise the bar'. Everyone had someone close to their ability
level to work with and inspire them to improve, and new
training partnerships and friendships were created that
are still going strong.
This year, our goal is to have 12-15 athletes in the clinic;
still small enough to provide personal attention, but big
enough to promote an even better group dynamic and have
lots of fun.
For more information, check out the attached brochure and
poster. Judging by the interest we have received so far
from previous clinic participants and new inquiries, these
clinic spots are going to go fast. Be sure to reserve your
spot by emailing mike@discomfortzone.com.

Happy training!
