Rocks!! Run In Mississauga

Congratulations to all Rocks!! and locals who competed in Mississauga this weekend. Seven participated in the half marathon while Dianne Carriere was our lone entrant in the marathon. Dianne performed admirably running a Boston qualifying time of 3:45 net. In the half Maureen Marshall ran her second half in a row with a pace under 5:00 minutes per km. Check out all the results here.

Hanmer Native Wins Ladies Marathon

Trevor Shamas went home to London for Mothers day and took the time to run his hometown event - the Forest City Half Marathon. Trev will tell all about it below.

Our own Hanmer native and now resident of London, Karen Carvell-Cowling, took the overall Ladies crown in the Forest City Marathon. Karen was 10th overall in 3:03:55.2. Her nearest rival was Grace Baker, also from London, who turned a 3:10:05.

Trev writes:

Went out and ran the half in the Forest City Road Races in London today, being Mothers' Day. (Figured I could sneak it in and be back at the house before Mom got up.)

Course was very nice, following a couple of major roads in London and winding its wa through the University, along a (paved) riverside trail, and through several residential areas of the city. It started and ended in Victoria Park downtown.

I'd say there was an average number of spectators for a race this size. I found them quite enthusiastic, though.

As I ran I made a few mental notes on the race organization relative to the Rocks! event last weekend: subdivisions weren't pyloned at all but it seemed to work ok. Marshalls made sure no one ran astray (no pun intended); main roads were pyloned but not as generously as in Sudbury; police worked well with traffic, letting cars go in between gaps of runners; Starbucks provided post-race coffee and other stuff; Dominos was setting up as I left, too; start/finish area was set up well with sufficient room for everyone as the masses came in; second loop of the marathon followed a different loop than the first, which I thought was a good idea; signage was LARGE and was color coded to each event, making it easy to stay tuned in to where you were; water stations were sufficient but not as plentiful as Sudbury.

Generally, it was a very well organized event. If I had to pick, setting biases aside, I'd still give the Rocks! races the higher score overall.

Must say I got a bit of a boost towards the end as the half course merged with the 10k course at 19k. I converged with the leaders in the 10k at that point and was passed by several other fast folks who provided some incentive to finish as strongly as possible

Run Club Update

Hello there!

I'll kick off this update with some exciting news; we now have the Garmin 405 in store! This is a wildly functional watch with both GPS and heart rate monitoring. The 405 automatically transfers your workouts and other data directly to your computer with a wireless connection as soon as they are within range. Best of all, the new watch has an ultra cool touch bezel design (the same as you would find on an Ipod) and is no bigger than your normal watch - Garmin has finally made a watch you can wear everyday! This will definitely sell out fast - get yours today!

Speaking of very cool electronics selling out quickly - we will be receiving a full restock of the Nike Sportband near the end of the month. The Sportbands sold out within 3 hours for a good reason; this ultra sleek, bracelet-sized speed and distance monitor comes for only $79.99!

Now with some great news for your apparel needs; much of our great looking, great feeling spring line is now on sale! Shorts, capris, t-shirts, long sleeves and bra tops can be found for up to $20.00 off!
