Meagan
McGrath Finishes the Marathon des Sables
|
|
Captain
Meagan McGrath, climber of the “Seven
Summits” and NOW "Marathon
des Sables Finisher", speaks at Rocks!!!
Pasta Dinner |
|

|
Meagan
McGrath finished the grueling Marathon des Sables
at around noon on Saturday April 5, coming in
at a respectable 287th place out of a field
of 800.
The Marathon des Sables is a six day endurance
race across Morocco's deserts sands, which
started on March 27. The challenge represents
a big change for McGrath who has made a name
for herself as a snow-bound adventurer climbing
mountains. The 30-year old former Sudburian
and Canadian Air Force Captain has become
the only Canadian female, and the first Canadian
Forces member, to achieve both versions of
the Seven Summits.
Hear Meagan talk about her adventures at
our SudburyRocks!!! Race, Run or Walk for
Diabetes Saturday evening Pasta Dinner on
Saturday May 3. Tickets can be purchased by
contacting the Canadian Diabetes Association
(670-1993 ext 7) or through the Registration
box at SudburyRocksMarathon.com

Senior
Goes the Extra Kilometre to Fight Cancer
Posted By Matthew Desrosiers
Sudbury Star
 |
Rocks!! member Maureen Moustgaard is taking
the fight against cancer out of the hospital and onto the
road.
Moustgaard will participate in the
Ride to Conquer Cancer fundraising event. The ride
is 200-kilometre, two-day trek from Toronto to Niagara Falls
beginning June 20.
"I have to be honest - it was the challenge of trying
to bike 200 kilometres that started it," the 60-year-old
Sudbury resident said. She does not overlook the cause,
however.
"Every time you turn around, there's somebody dying
from some sort of cancer," she said. "I'm close
to the cause. I lost my stepfather five years ago to leukemia."
|
Moustgaard registered for the event
last fall after her husband saw an advertisement in the
Globe and Mail. He joked that she should give the ride a
try since she's so active. She took the idea seriously.
"I thought about it for three weeks and I could not
come up with one reason why I shouldn't try it," she
said. "I thought, well, I can try this since someone's
going to be there to look after me. I'm 60 years old, I'm
not a child."
Riders will have support from volunteers throughout the
journey. Crews will transport their gear for them, as well
as provide water stations and portable toilets during pit
stops. Food is provided during the first evening of the
ride. The atmosphere will be friendly and co-operative,
she said.
"It's not a race, it's a ride," Moustgaard
said. "At the end of the (last) day, everybody will
bike into Niagara Falls at the same time. There's supposed
to be about 3,000 riders."
Event organizers provide training guides for participants
to help get them into shape before the ride.
In October, Moustgaard purchased an indoor
bike trainer. She found she was able to keep up with the
training regiment and has been able to surpass the average
recommended speeds in each new training tip. When she is
not training on her bike, she lifts weights and also works
on her cardio.
"I'm not gonna cruise through it, but I think I can
do it," she said. "A hundred kilometres in one
day for an elite cyclist will be nothing, you know. I just
plan to go out there and basically have fun."
If you wish to sponsor
Maureen, you can do so online

Discomfort
Zone 2008 Spring Triathlon Camp
Asheville, North Carolina
April 20-27, 2008
Dear Fellow Triathletes and Multi-sport enthusiasts,
I am happy to announce that once again this year we will be
hosting a Triathlon Training Camp in the beautiful Blue Ridge
Mountains of Western North Carolina. Last year's camp was
a smashing success and saw each one of our campers set personal
bests in one or more aspects of their training. Even better
was how much fun we all had and the new friendships that were
made.
This year our training camp will take place from April 20-27,
2008. The stunning city of Asheville North Carolina has access
to some of the best cycling terrain in North America and is
within a (long) day's drive of southern Ontario. Asheville
also has a very good airport close to where we are staying
with 1-stop flights from Toronto and Ottawa.
Campers from last year will remember the great swimming pool
and hot tub, the high quality cycling roads, the friendly
drivers, the great cafes and restaurants along the way, and
the endless running trails starting right at our doorstep.
We will be returning to some of the favourite routes and climbs
from last year's camp, and will be adding some new surprises,
including a day trip to the final mountain stage of the Tour
de Georgia cycling race where we can test our mettle on the
famous Brasstown Bald climb before watching the pros do it
later in the day.
For the Camp Fee of $695, you receive:
Airport pickup in Asheville (if required)
8 nights accommodation
7 full days of swim, bike, run, strength and flexibility training
on some of the best terrain in North America
Sport-specific video analysis (by request)
Evening discussions on a wide range of multisport topics
Discomfort Zone Technical T-shirt
Discomfort Zone cycling socks
Please forward this information to any athletes you know who
might be interested. If you have any questions or would like
to reserve a spot, please contact us at mike@discomfortzone.com |

Track North Rules and Schedules
Dear Track North Athletes, Parents and Sponsors:
Please find attached a copy of "Track
North News - Spring 2008".
Please read this newsletter as
it contains very important information regarding the upcoming
spring and summer track seasons.
Of utmost importance is
for everyone to ensure they are registered with the club
(whether you plan to compete or not) as soon as possible.
Legally, no athlete should be training with the club or
receiving coaching unless they are registered. Details regarding
registration are included in the newsletter.
We have also provided a list of potential competitions available
to Track North athletes this spring and summer. This is
not a complete list but it does include all meets the three
Track North coaches will be attending.
You will note we only have two Summer Twilight meets planned
this year for the LU Track as we are awaiting final word
if the track will be completely resurfaced later this summer.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please
don't hesitate to contact one of the Track North coaches!
See you all at practice!
