Captain
Meagan McGrath, climber
of the “Seven Summits” speaks at Pasta
Dinner |
Ever considered a “taller”
challenge after completing your marathon, half marathon,
10K or 5K? Sudbury’s Meagan McGrath has, and you will
have another chance to hear her speak about her incredible
summit of Mount Everest at this year’s SudburyROCKS!!!
Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes pasta dinner.
On May 3rd, 2008, Meagan McGrath will be
addressing approximately 300 runners and other interested
participants at a Pasta Dinner at the Radisson Hotel at
6 p.m. Come be inspired by her photos and journey from marathons
to mountain climber.
Since 2002, Meagan McGrath has climbed many
peaks all over the world in an attempt to climb the “Seven
Summits”- the highest peak on each continent. On May
21, 2007 Meagan summitted Mount Everest, achieving her goal
to climb the Seven Summits.
In January 2008, Captain Meagan McGrath
became the first woman to summit the Carstenz Pyramid version
of the Seven Summits, making her the only Canadian woman
to achieve both versions of this mountain challenge.
Born in Toronto and raised in Sudbury, Meagan
McGrath graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada
in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. Captain
Meagan McGrath continues to pursue her dream to climb the
highest peaks in the world.

Marathon
Motivation
forwarded by Kris
Conroy - Manager, Sudbury Running Room
from an Ottawa marathoner:
My father wanted to be a runner.
It was a rite of passage when, as a boy, he invited
me to join him at 6:30 AM for his 20 minute jog.
Each ended with a one-block sprint through Old Ottawa
South. Chronic ill health plagued him, however,
and our runs became less and less frequent. The
marathon was the ultimate symbol of his interest
in the sport. From the very first day Ottawa held
the National Capital Marathon, each year he would
gather the family and walk to Colonel By Drive to
cheer the runners on. We knew none of the participants
and, standing on the grass by the curb, applauded
everyone equally. I was astonished at how many people
were able to do this as young and old women and
men streamed by determinedly. Some with proud strides,
others with funny walks, they seemed to have nothing
in common but this remarkable goal. When I was in
my teens, my father died suddenly of cancer. We
stopped going. In my mid-thirties, I met a group
of colleagues at work who shared this strange hobby
of running together every Sunday morning. They recommended
the Running Room as a good place to learn. Within
two years, I was standing in the nervous crowd of
Ottawa runners at the start line for my first marathon.
In the excitement, the entertainment, and the chatting
with strangers, I didn't think of my father until
we reached that same point on Colonel By Drive.
Families I didn't know stood there, applauding.
It was when I passed them, separated by that same
piece of Ottawa curb, that I really became proud
of running a marathon.

Club Update |
Hello Walkers and Runners!
We’re winding down the winter season and that means
many of our clinics are coming to an end. We have a whole
bunch of graduating walkers and runners who are in the final
weeks of training and who have worked extremely hard through
some difficult weather conditions to reach their goals.
To help celebrate their achievements, at Practice Club on
Sunday March 16th, we hope you will join us for a green-themed
walk and run. We’ll have lots of fabulous athletes,
snacks, and of course lots of green! Help us cheer everyone
across the finish line!
Of course, if there are clinics ending, then there must
be a whole new batch of clinics ready to go! Starting the
week of March 17th, we have:
5K Walk Mondays at 6:30 p.m.
10K Walk Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.
Learn to Run Mondays at 6:00 p.m.
For Women Only Fridays at 6:00 p.m.
5K Run Mondays at 6:30 p.m.
10K Run Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.
Get ready for your spring event with a great group and ten
weeks of instruction. Clinic talks cover the basics like
running in hot and cold weather, nutrition, goal setting,
how to avoid injury, pacing, and much more. The clinic night
consists of 20 to 30 minute seminar followed by a group
run of varying lengths and speeds!
There are only a few weeks left to get 20% off your spring
footwear and apparel needs. Come on in with your Lactantia
Healthy Attitude or Olivina Margarine and complete the coupon
with the UPC from the margarine to receive 20% off your
$50.00 purchase of regular-priced merchandise excluding
electronics, gift cards, clinics and races. Offer expires
March 15th, 2008.

We are back at our old home of Steam Whistle Brewing, the
Roundhouse at 255 Bremner Blvd. Right in the heart of Toronto
and the route will run through the downtown core with the

Once again all participants will receive a free bowl of
