Ontario Masters Winter Mini Meets
A Sudburian Cleans
Up!
February 10, 2008
There were FIVE CAN records
set at the meet…
…all by the athletes
in the Pentathlon (below)

M60 J P Mayer, M45 Kevin Sanjari, M45 Alain
Gallant, W55 Rhona Trott, M50 Ralph Cilevitz, M45 Don Ritchie
(J.P. Mayer is from Sudbury)
Jean-Pierre Mayer,
after coming down from Sudbury,
was ready for a big day. In the 2nd event, he just missed
the 5.17 Long Jump record with a 4.97m jump.In the third
event, the Shot, he broke the CAN record of 13.72 set
by Art Jaago 20 years ago with a whaling 13.84 put. After
the third event, he had already broken the CAN record
of 1851 !!Next, in the High Jump, he passed the CAN record
of 1.48 by Ian Hume set over thirty years ago! He finished
with a 1.52m performance. He finished with 4038 points….a
new record by over twice the points!! Did
I mention that JP’s from Sudbury! JP will
be part of Team Canada at next month’s World Championships
in France.(the Gold Medal performance, by a Finn, at the
last Championships was 3786 points in Singelfingen in
2006). JP’s coming back to the Indoors in two weeks
to go for the CAN record in the Long Jump.
Don Ritchie set
the M45 Indoor Pentathlon record with 3128 pts.
Rhona Trott broke
the W55 60mH record with an 11.29 mark. She held the old
record at 12.14

Thoughts About Kurt from an Expat
by Christine Guy
As an expatriate Sudburian, now living in Midland,
I check in at Sudbury Rocks! now and again to see what my
old community is up to. I was glad that you reminded me about
the anniversary of Kurt's death, and although I don't travel
much during the winter and thus was unable to join you for
the memorial run, I dedicated my own Saturday's run to Kurt's
memory.
You are so right that we have to pause now and then to reflect
on why we do what we do and who has helped us. Kurt was a
good friend to me when I was living and running in Sudbury.
He was a great role model for active aging, and now that I'm
a little older myself, I can really appreciate that he continued
to add new skills and try new things in his later years. My
favourite piece of advice he gave me: when you pass somebody,
"try to control your breathing so they don't know how
hard you are working" or his suggestion for running a
good 10K: "take off fast, and hang on."
Thanks for everything, Kurt.

Club Update |
Hello All-
Sudbury’s second Health Fair this
past Sunday was fantastic! The professionals who joined
us gave out some great information to help everyone stay
healthy and happy during winter training. Everyone who came
out and took advantage of this wonderful set-up had a great
time gathering training tips, learning how to keep hard-working
feet healthy and finding out body fat percentage. Thanks
to all who participated!
We know that a lot of you are heading out to events such
as the Chilly Half, the Peterborough Half and Around the
Bay over the next several of weeks. You’ve done all
of your training, you're mentally prepared, and only one
burning question remains:
What should I wear?!
To help you out, here’s a checklist of clothing and
equipment to bring with you for events in iffy late winter
and early spring conditions:
Toque
Mitts/gloves
Base Layer shirt
Mid-weight layer shirt
Jacket
Tights/pants
Double Layer Cold Weather Socks
Shoes
Water bottle/water belt
Sunglasses
Bodyglide
Gel Flask
Watch
Garmin
Race number belt
Duffle Bag
Gels/nutrition
Running Room Sherpa Hoodie for after the event
Be prepared! Check the weather reports and be ready just
in case conditions on the day of the event are not what
was expected.
As a runner, we only ever see races from the route. You
would be in awe if you witnessed all of the hard work that
goes into a race behind the scenes …it is truly immense.
We understand that some of you may be running the 2008 HSBC
Chilly Half Marathon on Sunday, March 2nd; and some if not
running in the race may be planning on doing a run that
day. If any of you have some “free” time on
the Sunday we would love it if you would be interested in
helping out at the race. We are seeking VOLUNTEERS for water
stations, marshaling, and the finish line. In addition,
we are also looking for support for race registration which
occurs Friday, February 29 (11:00 am - 9:00 pm), and Saturday,
March 1 (9:30 am - 4:00 pm). We truly understand how busy
life is, but thought this may be a great opportunity for
you to see a race from another vantage point. Please send
an email to any of the following individuals if you are
interested: Kelly Arnott - vrpro@sympatico.ca; Jessica Arnott
- jess_arnott@hotmail.com; or, Mary Lynn Futers - futers@cogeco.ca.
Thanks so much for your consideration!
