6th Annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar

On Saturday, February 2, the
Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club hosted our sixth annual
Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar. Kurt
died suddenly on January 29, 2002. We have been keeping his
memory and accomplishments alive since then on the first Saturday
in February every year with a little pep talk and a short
informal run.
It was good to see runners
come out to not only remember Kurt and his contributions but
also to take this day in their running year to pause and reflect
on why we do this, who helped us along the way, who are we
helping and what do we plan to do with our gift in the future.
Unfortunately this was our
least attended run of the new year. I don't have an answer
but I do fervently hope that our passion does not get lost
in hectic schedules. Of course running should never come first.
We all have full lives to live with many unique challenges.
But please do not forget those who came before us laying down
foundations so that we all have easy access to those sports
we desire to participate in. The only way those bases are
maintained or hopefully strengthened is with our active support.
We also need to occasionally contemplate on what "We"
can do for the sport or community and we need to spend very
little time thinking about what's in it for "Me".
In closing I would like to
thank you all for supporting the Club and also for supporting
our local Runs whether you participated or even more importantly
volunteered. Your presence is always muchly appreciated.
The Coach,
Vince

Rocks!! Run Surf City
Rocks!! members William and Tawnecia Tai expanded their
running horizons when they journeyed to Huntington Beach,
California to compete in Surf City's distance events. Will
took on the marathon while Tawnecia represented us in the
half marathon (results
here). Both performed admirably and apparently
in somewhat iffy conditions. From
the Organizers:
Congratulations Surf City Runners!
Thank you for participating in
the 2008 Surf City USA (or should we call it "Soak
City"? ) Marathon, Half Marathon, or 5K! Our largest
field ever included runners from all 50 states and 15 foreign
countries. Despite the challenging conditions, 27 runners
qualified for the Timex Time to Beat Half Marathon Speed
Bonus, with 4 men breaking last year's course record! Congratulations
to all runners who competed on this unusually wild weather
day!
Congratulations Tawnecia and Will

Will Tai's Race Report
The thought of going to Huntington
Beach, in Orange County, California and running a
road race with a surfing theme on February 3rd, 2008
seemed like a great idea several months ago.
On race day however, the weather did not cooperate
and turned into quite a storm, with about an inch
of rain, a high of 54 degrees Fahrenheit, and winds
up to 45 mph. However, this did not dampen our spirits,
nor those of the other runners. The 1st annual Surf
City 5K, half marathon & marathon were superb
events, with the most enthusiastic and friendly volunteers
we have ever encountered (the city itself also was
the most friendly city to which I have travelled).
The course went up Pacific Coast Highway, and through
parks, beachfront paths, as well as right next to
an oil field - quite the variety and a lot of fun,
but a challenging course (especially with the rain
and winds coming off of the Pacific Ocean) with gentle
slopes.
There was tonnes of cheering and encouragement from
the crowd and young kids, even though it was miserable
outside. The cheer that stands out the most was a
person who said "I LOVE CANADA man!!!" as
I ran by with my Canada T-shirt. Much to my chagrin,
instead of a bodacious beautiful California bikini-clad
babe, the person who cheered me onwards was a muscular,
thirty something year old man wearing a tight T-shirt
(oh well, I guess you can't have it all).
Tawnecia & I were ecstatic with our results. Tawnecia
finished the half marathon in a strong 1:56:59 ranking
1822 out of 8413, and I finished the marathon in 3:49:19
ranking 210 out of 1084. We both received unique and
absolutely stunning medals, which added to the enjoyment
of the event, and we would like to congratulate the
organizers for putting on an amazing 1st annual Surf
City USA 5K, half marathon & marathon. We would
recommend this race to anyone for a memorable and
friendly event, but be prepared for any kind of weather.
See you on the roads,
William Tai

| Sudbury's
Third Hypothermic Half - February 2, 2008
by Vince Perdue
Sudbury can be a tough
place to run in the winter. It can even be a tougher venue
to attempt to organize a successful running event in this
season of ice and snow. The last three years have proved
that old man weather will do his darndest to dissuade the
faint of heart from outside endeavours.
Sudbury Running Room's
first attempt at running a 1/2 marathon in Sudbury in the
winter was almost thwarted by an overnight blizzard that
left roads just about impassable with high winds and over
40cm. of white stuff on the ground. At the store Vince,
Lise and Donna were getting ready to cancel the day when
runners began appearing at the door - and they were ready
to run. A quick scout of the area revealed the only plowed
surface to be found was a local mall parking lot. Year one
for the Hypo half was ran there with participants doing
multiple laps until all decided it was time for the "all
you can eat" brunch which was included in the race
package.
Our second attempt
was just as eventful with overnight temperatures plunging
to the -30 mark not including that dreaded windchill. Enthusiastic
runners dressed like the Michelin Man attacked the frozen
course and they were greeted at every turn by equally frozen
marshals. If you wanted a drink it was bound to be a very
icy one - usually in solid form by the time it reached lips.
But all starters finished with bragging rights going to
those with the longest icicles in their headgear. Hot drinks
went over well at the buffet.
This year we thought
we got a break. Mother Nature had kicked Jack Frost in the
butt and temperatures overnight were not too far below 0
and on the day they rose a bit. Unfortunately there was
a bit of snow overnight which added to the accumulations
waiting to be cleared from the course streets and trails.
In a word it was SLIPPERY. One step forward included a 1/2
step slip back on the Loach's Trail and on the sidewalks.
Runners and walkers were not deterred. And extra marshals
provided great motivation and direction as we slipped and
slided by their stations. We even had speedsters out in
both male and female categories . Check
out all results here. The buffet was extra special this
third time out as the Buzzy Browns allotted us their full
dining room and the food choices were upped from last year.
Yes, Sudbury can be
a tough place to run in the winter. But it sure doesn't
appear to discourage any of us. Running Room's Hypothermic
1/2 has now fully gained a footing and is an event that
runners unafraid of unusual conditions await with anticipation
every February.
See you next year for
Running Room Sudbury's 4th Annual Hypothermic 1/2 Marathon.

Lise Perdue adds:
A little note to thank the
cheerful volunteers and those good souls who put the
Hypothermic on…you guys are true gems and very
much appreciated. All runners/walkers should be very
proud of themselves for slip sliding through that
mess especially those first timers. Congratulations
to all and especially to Paul Pressacco, who did amazingly
well despite the conditions. I also want to thank
my running partner, Laurene, who was very patient
and stuck to me the whole way despite the very slow
pace. A friend of mine would often tell me: “What
doesn’t kill you will make you stronger”.
