February 2, 2008                 6th Annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar

On Saturday, February 2, the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club will hosting our sixth annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar.

Kurt died suddenly on Tuesday, January 29, 2002. He was in his 79th year and still running competitively. He was a mentor and inspiration to most local runners and it is fitting his actions be remembered.

The Run will be very informal. There will be no set distances and it is not a race. We will meet in the lobby at Laurentian University's Athletic Building at 9:00 am . The run will start at approximately 9:00 am and will proceed at a leisurely pace down Loach's Trail. Most runners will continue around a 10k loop back to the University via Ramsey Lake Rd. and South Bay Rd. Runners are free to go whatever distance appeals to them or fits their schedule but ALL runners will be encouraged to stick together for the first few kms.

The Sudbury Rocks!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes -

an event for all ages and abilities

by Vince Perdue, Course Director

Our upcoming Sudbury Rocks!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes being held on May 4 is an event for all ages and abilities. From the “FREE” 1km Kids run, on up through the 5km, 10km, ½ marathon and finally the marathon there is definitely an opportunity for everyone to be challenged within their abilities and therefore reach their goals. Ages range from the almost brand new gems in the 1km right across the spectrum to fully formed diamonds in the other events.

The 1km “FREE” Kids Run
This event is designed to get the young folks involved in the sport in a safe and friendly environment. Parents are enthusiastically invited to run along with their young charges though the downtown streets and baby joggers are absolutely welcomed. The Kids get to experience a professional start/finish setup and all the positive energy of a real race environment along with lots of boisterous spectators. All finishers are rewarded with medals and goodies. There are no special prizes for the fastest but we do record the top (10) individuals and the results are posted but otherwise this is a participation event.

The 5Km Walk/Run
The fastest growing race today is the 5km. This “FUN” distance is doable by all ages and fitness levels. It’s also a great outing for those into bonding with other like-minded individuals. The 5km distance is also a great first step on one’s path to longer distance running. Many long distance runners continue to use 5km road races as high-speed training sessions for their longer distance events.
This year the Sudbury Rocks!!! 5km course has been altered to make the event just a little easier and faster. It’s now an out and back and the terrain is not challenging. There are t-shirts and finishing medals for all plus winning and placing prizes as well as medals for age group wins and placings.

The 10km Walk/Run
With only reasonable training, most people can complete a 10km. You don’t have to train too long for the event and you recover quickly. It can be a “FUN” time or a step up from the 5km distance or a real test of your running abilities. It is also a stepping stone on the path for those pursuing longer distance events.
The Sudbury Rocks!!! 10km course has been changed this year as well. There are less turns and it’s flatter and a bit faster. As in the 5km there t-shirts and finishing medals for all plus winning and placing prizes as well as medals for age group wins and placings.

The ½ Marathon
The ½ marathon is a friendly distance. Beginners, who have gotten their introduction to road running in a 5km or 10Km, can look to the half as the next step upward. Experienced runners like half marathons, because racing 21 kilometres requires somewhat less time commitment than does a full 26-mile marathon. And they can recover more rapidly.
The Sudbury Rocks!! ½ Marathon is one of our best attended events. The course is one full loop of the marathon route running through the flatter parts of the city. Participants will not only compete against other halfers but will share the road with younger, faster marathoners trying to overtake their older competitors. It should make for an exciting day. There is also prize money and medals for the speedsters and medals for the age group placers. Of course, all registrants get technical short sleeve t-shirts and all finishers get medals.

The Marathon
One of the ultimate running challenges is the marathon. It requires both mental and physical stamina well beyond what is required of shorter events. Training for the marathon will probably change your outlook on things even beyond running. Done properly, both in your training and completion of the distance, you will be rewarded in so many positive ways that are hard to explain to the uninitiated.
The Sudbury Rocks!!! Marathon is Canada’s only age graded chase marathon – this allows EVERYONE the chance to win! A staggered start by age and gender with prizing and finishing based on the adjusted times will make sure that any age – male or female - can win! Details here. First place prize money is a whopping $2,000 and we pay to 10th place. Details here. All registrants receive technical short sleeve t-shirts and finishing medals. Age group winners receive placing medals.
The course is 2 loops through the flatter parts of the city starting and finishing in front of the Sudbury YMCA on Durham St.

Best of luck to all. May the best (man or woman of any age!!!!) win!!

All Events
All events in the Sudbury Rocks!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes are in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Proceeds and pledges from the Sudbury Rocks!!! Race, Run, Walk for Diabetes will support research and local programs of the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Quinoa: one of natures power foods

Quinoa which is pronounced (keen-wah) has been around for centuries. It
was called the grain of the gods by the Incas and for good reason. It is
unlike any other grain as it packs the combination of being high in
protein, fiber, iron and complex carbohydrates. It is truly one of the
most complete foods around. For a runner who is looking for clean foods
to fuel their system, Quinoa is a great choice. Quinoa can be served hot
as a starch dish or cold in a salad. It is similar to couscous but much
more nutrient rich.

Quinoa's protein content, about 16 percent, is higher than that of any
other grain. Most grains lack the amino acid lysine which Quinoa is
abundant in. In fact, the amino acid composition in Quinoa is almost
perfect. The World Health Organization has judged the protein in Quinoa to
be as complete as that in milk. In addition, Quinoa contains more iron
than most grains, and is a good source of calcium, phosphorus, folate, and
many B vitamins. For this reason it is a great choice for runners who want
the nutritional edge to push their body to the next level.

Quinoa is gaining popularity and can now be found at most grocery stores.
In some cities it may still require you to go to a health food store to
get it. Regardless finding and incorporating quinoa into your diet is a
fantastic way of getting clean calories into your system.

It is always difficult when you are introduced to a new food to figure out
how to prepare it so I have included a recipe that I make all the time.

Jim's Greek Quinoa Salad

Take one cup of quinoa and rinse it through a tight strainer to get the
fine dust off the grain. If you do not do this step the quinoa can get
bitter.

Boil Quinoa for about 15 minutes or until the outer shell disappears and
you have a translucent grain. Set aside in the refrigerator.

Chop the following:
Medium Yellow Pepper
¼ red onion
½ a English cucumber
2 small roma tomatoes chopped
¾ cup of crumbled feta cheese

Dressing:

¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil
1/8 cup of good balsamic vinegar
pinch of salt
pinch of pepper
I Tbsp of greek spices

Pull the quinoa out of the refrigerator and mix all ingredients into the
quinoa. Add the dressing and put back into the refrigerator. Serve cold.

If you want a bigger meal you can grill some blackened chicken or shrimp
on the BBQ and add it to the top of your salad. It is a great meal and it
is even better the second day!

Remember if you are in pain and struggling with injury, we can help. "Our
mission..is your wellness".
