4th Annual Fun Run Under the Lights

at the Naughton Chalet and Trails

November 1, 2007

The 4th annual Run Under the Lights at the Naughton Ski Trails saw all ages hit the the 3k lighted portion of the ski trails under a clear crisp sky. Adam Jeffery, age 14, won the 3k trail run in 11:53 and local tri speedster Buddy Green dropped in to take the 6k event in 21:44. Ted Keenan was the lucky recipient of the night's draw prize. All this excitement for only $5. I continue to wonder why we don't see more people out.

Rocks!! Compete in Ironman Florida

Panana City Florida November 4, 2007

from Ironman.com:                    A record setting day in Florida
TAGS: 2007 florida ironman recap top story

So how stiff was the competition in Panama City Beach for Ford Ironman Florida today? Sara Gross went fast enough to have won every one of the previous eight events here. Unfortunately for the Canadian, six other women went even faster, including Nina Kraft, who won in 9:05:35.

Sergio Marques ran a 2:46 marathon to complete the race in 8:23:49. Despite his stellar performance, Marques couldn't catch up to Germany's Stephan Vuckovic, who claimed his first Ironman title in an impressive 8:21:29, which set the course record here by a whopping one second. Rocks!! members Jan Weeres, Becky Olacke and Jody Nadjiwon made the pilgrimage south to compete in Ford Ironman Florida. All finished with strong showings. Results Here

Hamilton Marathon Weekend
Red Hill Valley Parkway
Hamilton, Ontario

November 4, 2007

November 05, 2007
Nicole Macintyre
The Hamilton Spectator
(Nov 5, 2007)

Ready, set ... Red Hill! Runners pound parkway
After 50 years, the rubber hit the road in Red Hill Valley this weekend. Rubber soles, that is.

More than 3,000 runners pounded the parkway's fresh pavement to mark the completion of the four-lane, eight kilometre, $225-million highway.

"There were moments when we wondered if we would have this day," the project's manager, Chris Murray, remarked at the parkway's opening ceremony at the Red Hill Bowl.

"It's hard to believe it's over."

First formally proposed in 1957, the parkway is set to open to vehicles Nov. 16 after some final touches, like signs and guardrails, are complete. More than 70,000 vehicles are expected to use the controversial highway daily.

Rocks!! Run the Red Hill Valley ROAD 2 HOPE

My interest was stirred into taking part in Hamilton's Road to Hope for a number of reasons.

  1. Fellow Rocks!! member Ken Stubbings had already signed up way back in March at the Around the Bay Road Race just because the Directors were offering free fuel belts for early entrants and he wanted one.
  2. This was to be Hamilton's first marathon in decades. I don't know when or where the last one ran. It's always fun to do new events.
  3. Runners were getting the opportunity to run on a brand new highway before automobiles ever turned a wheel. The Red Hill Valley Parkway was constructed to complete a highway link around Hamilton's perimeter. This run was partly to celebrate its completion.
  4. My running schedule was already pretty full as there were runs in every week of October including 2 other marathons, The PEC and Niagara. The Hamilton course was also fully on 4 lane roads and could prove mentally challenging. My initial bout of negativism quickly faded as both Ken and I realized this was a perfect opportunity to expand our distance running experiences by doing multiple marathons in a short time frame with 2 on back to back weekends.
  5. We would get to run Hamilton's mountain (down AND back up) in the final stages of the marathon and I thought that would be a neat challenge.

I don't remember if Ken actually ran with his new fuel belt but I can report that Hamilton's first Road to Hope Race Weekend, was a big success. About 1500 participants ran the shorter distances on Saturday and about the same amount were entered on Sunday for the 1/2 and full marathon. A cool but clear day greeted the runners. Believe me for November this was fabulous conditions. Yes the course was fully on 4 lane highways, the Lincoln Alexander Parkway (Link) and the new Red Hill Valley Parkway, but I didn't find that aspect difficult at all. The course aid stations were as good as it gets with themes at most from Austin Powers with his blonde sidekick to Sponge Bob enthusiastically pushing us on. I believe the crowd support was better than Niagara . The course was mildly upgrade and against the wind on the Link section going west from about km 6 to 16.5 but it was early in the run and runners were strong and we did get to turn around and run the reverse grade all the way back to the new Red Hill Valley section. The real adventure began there. At about km 29 we started down the mountain. At 34k the course kicks back up for a bit and then we return and start back up the mountain at about 36k. A realistic grade to begin but by 37k we were expending energy big time. Unfortunately I believed the hill was done at about 39k where we crested an especially "FUN" section. Not so! After a small respite we were heading up hard again on one of the steepest sections all the way to the top at just past the 41k marker. Fellow Rocks!! member and 1/2 marathon finisher Suzanne Dionne joined me here for encouragement and a triumphant pacing to the finish line where I was cheered through the mats by marathoner Ken plus our Rocks!! 1/2 marathon cheering section. Absolutely top notch.

Follow-up Notes:

  1. Hamilton ran an exceptional first time event. They should be proud.
  2. Closed loop highway courses can be fun - if you have the right attitude.
  3. Running multiple distance events is not difficult if you are well trained and pace smartly. One week after Niagara I was able to evenly split the halfs comfortably and run very inch of the course including the mountain.
  4. Running the mountain was a hoot. Yes it was hard but it made the race special.
  5. I feel fortunate to be able to do this stuff and especially with friends and family. What a rush!

THE HILL

High: 202m Low 81m

Ken Stubbings writes:

A special thanks to Vince and Lise for making this fall's running events a blast. What a rush the past 5 weeks have been. It was a lot easier training for the multiple events knowing that others were going to attend the same event with the same mental guessing game. It is always a challenge to go beyond the "text book" training and do just what feels right to you.

Congratulations Vince on three marathons in 4 weekends with two being a week apart.
Congratulations Lise on three 1/2 marathons in 4 weekends.
Congratulations Lynn on two 1/2 marathons three weeks apart.

The Hamilton Road 2 Hope Marathon was a challenge. The open freeway course had some long steady inclines with a continuous 15km wind against us. The last 5km was a continuously increasing incline that never seemed to end. The run was not as lonely as I thought it would be. It doubles back on itself twice, so there is lots of opportunity to see people. It was very much a unique experience and most likely a one and only event on that course. With just finishing Niagara the week before I had no idea on a finish time. I took a 3:10 pace band just to help keep track of where I was. I am quite pleased that I finished with a time of 3:09:52. But "gall dang it" I was 2 seconds too slow for third place for the old guys. That is 0.05 seconds per km. What was I thinking!!!!!!!!!

After completing 6 marathons in 4 months, as Vince said "I am sick of gels for this year."

Time to plan for next year.
Ken and Lynn

Suzanne Dionne writes:

What a good race that was. Congrats to Ken and Vince for three Marathons in four weeks and Lise for three halfs and Lynn for two halfs and a five km race. I am very proud of all of you.
It was nice also that we got to share a very good meal thanks to Steve again.
It is great again that Lise thought of all that food for Saturday night.
I really enjoyed the race even if the wind was strong and the hill was long. Ha Ha and for the ones that don't know this I really don't enjoy wind in my face especially up-hill. Oh and should I say I don't like hills either. But again I really enjoyed the Hamilton Half Marathon.
Thanks again
Suzanne

Who Will Be There?

Ray Zahab
A true inspiration to anyone who has a dream to achieve! An endurance runner who has accomplished what was once impossible: running across the Sahara Desert! Read more about Ray Zahab below.

We are working on our list of confirmed speakers for this fall event. We are in touch with some exciting athletes, and we cannot wait to share the good news with you!

Ray Zahab - The Ultimate Endurance Athlete

7,000 km, Six Countries, 111 days, One Desert
On February 20th 2007, the impossible became possible. Ray Zahab and his partners Charlie Engle (from the US) and Kevin Lin (from Taiwan), crossed the Sahara Desert. They ran 111 consecutive days to accomplish their goal.

They saw with their own eyes the beauty and culture of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, and Egypt along the way, and met some incredible people.

It was a life changing experience to struggle through injury, extreme fatigue, and harsh weather conditions, and their lives will never be the same after such an incredible accomplishment.

Ray is the prime example of motivation and determination. He continues to coach, train and motivate others to live up to their full potential as athletes. This is why we invited him to speak at Guts & Glory II. He is looking forward to visiting Sudbury and to relive his experience in the Sahara with you

Run Club Update

Congratulations to Parneet and Russ, winners of our Halloween Spooktackular! Their wonderfully scary masks added some festive fun to a blustery evening.

The weather has been rainy, but on the Brightside, the rain has washed in great new merchandise into the running room! Yes, what says winter is coming better than turning the clocks back, the weather going below zero, and a great new pair of thick reflective pants? Nothing! So grab your VisaPerks coupon and come one in and grab your winter apparel! And while you’re in, why not take those pants for a test drive by joining us for Practice Club on Wednesdays at 6:00 and Sundays at 8:30. Thanks to all those hardcore walkers and runners who have braved all elements to join us. Finding it hard to run or walk on your own against the wind but have no one to head out with? New joiners are always welcome! And if you really enjoy it, you can even join a clinic to reach your goal event! !

Here’s what’s new this week:

VisaPerks are here! Yes, we have ANOTHER coupon this week! 20% all apparel and shoes! The Running Room and Visa have scored you yet another deal! So, Visa customers, log into www.visaperks.ca, because these coupons are available now!

American Express is also offering a fabulous deal with 15% off Running Room product when you download the coupon off www.americanexpress.ca.

Tip of the week:
Beginning running in the winter for the first time, but are not sure you want to go out and buy a pair of running shoes with better grips? Try using a product like Get-a-Grip snow grips. You just slide them over top of your shoe and they have little picks in the bottom tohelp grip the ice and snow. But if you are truly worried about falling, make sure you do go out with a buddy, ID, and a small amount of money just in case something unfortunate does happen.

This week's product highlight:

What is the number one winter running necessity? Warm socks that is! And just in time for winter, Thorlos has delivered! We have Thorlos galore here at the Running Room this week! Thorlos are a very popular (and might I add comfortable) running sock, perfect for this cooler weather. And what else is a staple to any runner’s winter wardrobe? Why, Running Room private label reflective pants of course! With the wind resistant front and cozy back of these pants, they are perfect for all elements. Also, if you have been waiting for your favorite kind of running nourishment to arrive its here! We have recently received a large amount of eload and gels in stock. So now is the time to get prepped for long winter runs!

We are seeking instructors for many of the January clinics. If you are motivated to share the positive experiences you have had walking or running, call us at 523-4664 and we'll share the process with you, as well as let you know what resources are available to make Clinic Instruction as easy as possible.

Track North News - by Dick Moss

Two TNOR alumni are now competing in Europe - in two different sports.

Devon Kershaw

Devon Kershaw is about to begin his European season in nordic skiing. Devon has a new website that will keep you informed about his progress:
http://devonkershaw.com

Rebecca Johnston
Rebecca Johnston is now in Sweden playing for the senior national team in the Four Nations Cup. At 18, Rebecca is the youngest member of the team. They play their first game tonight, against Finland.

Rebecca is taking time away from her Cornell team to play for the national team. By the way, some of you will remember that Rebecca had to withdraw from OFSAA track last spring because of back pain. The discomfort lasted all summer, and in September, she found out what the problem was - a small vertebrae fracture in her back!!

At any rate, she appears to have recovered and is now in Sweden!!

You can see an article on Rebecca in yesterday's Sudbury Star.
