WIKWEMIKONG
35TH ANNUAL
10k ROADRACE
Sunday October
21
on beautiful Manitoulan
Island
|
A warm sunny day and favourable winds greeted 137 walkers
and runners for Wiky's 35th annual 10k Roadrace Championships
held last Sunday on Manitoulan Island. The Directors incorporated
a Walking Division for the first time this year and the
addition proved very successful drawing 58 competitors adding
to the 78 people in the 10k Championship Running Division.
The Organizers looked after the young folk as well awarding
medals and prizes in numerous age groups in an effort to
generate excitement in the competition - and it worked.
For those who haven't run Wiky the course is net decline
and point to point running into the north from Kaboni to
Wiky. The first 6k are run on a slight upgrade that most
runners would not be aware of. A noticeable rise at 6k leads
to a very fast downhill section all the way to 7.5k The
course then rolls slightly up and down towards home where
participants must run the Wiky ball diamond before finishing
behind home plate. Check out the course data below from
Motion Based website provided by Brent Walker and his Garmin. |

If the wind is right the course is fast
and 2 Track North members took advantage of the tailwind
this year. Damien Lagoutte and Matt Strickland battled it
out for first place honours with Damien coming across the
line first in 33:39 and Matt in 33:46. Evan Bayer rounded
out the top three posting a time of 37:01. Sudbury Rocks!!
member Brent Walker was the fastest Master in 38:32. Sudbury
Rocks!! female runners took the first two Ladies spots with
Lisa Stafford turning a time of 44:22 and Stephanie Koett
turning a 44:45. Steph was also the fastest female Master.
A very young Gillian Ominika (F13-15) came third in 47:53.

The Organizers, Stephen Odjig, Mark Peltier,
Henry Hoy and the Wikwemikong community didn't stop with
just a good race. Afterward all were treated to a lunch
including native corn soup and an award ceremony that included
enough prizes for all participants. Thank you very much
for your successful efforts. We'll see you again next year. |

Who Will Be
There?
Ray Zahab
A true inspiration to anyone who has a dream to achieve!
An endurance runner who has accomplished what was once impossible:
running across the Sahara Desert! Read more about Ray Zahab
below.
We are working on our list of confirmed speakers for this
fall event. We are in touch with some exciting athletes,
and we cannot wait to share the good news with you!
|
Ray Zahab - The
Ultimate Endurance Athlete
7,000 km, Six Countries, 111 days,
One Desert
On February 20th 2007, the impossible became possible.
Ray Zahab and his partners Charlie Engle (from the US)
and Kevin Lin (from Taiwan), crossed the Sahara Desert.
They ran 111 consecutive days to accomplish their goal.
They saw with their own eyes the beauty
and culture of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya,
and Egypt along the way, and met some incredible people.
It was a life changing experience to struggle
through injury, extreme fatigue, and harsh weather conditions,
and their lives will never be the same after such an incredible
accomplishment.
Ray is the prime example of motivation and
determination. He continues to coach, train and motivate
others to live up to their full potential as athletes.
This is why we invited him to speak at Guts & Glory
II. He is looking forward to visiting Sudbury and to relive
his experience in the Sahara with you

Club Update |
Hello All!
Looks like we have been experiencing some warm, beautiful weather
lately, so we hope you have all been able to get out and take
advantage of this lovely week by getting in some good quality
runs and walks! Congratulations to the runners and walkers who
took part in this past weekend’s Wiky 10km race on the
Island. Way to support a grass roots race and get in a few fast
miles in while you’re at it! Hopefully hearing about what
a great time this was from all your running and walking companions
has made you all excited for the rest of the autumn racing season
and you’ve ALREADY! started looking forward to winter!
If such is the case, in this weeks newsletter we have updates
on all the fabulous new winter wear we just got in…but
we won’t get into that quite yet…there’s not
enough room! But if you feel you’re ready to try out all
that beautiful new running spandex, keep in mind that you are
always welcome to come out and join the clinic of your choice
on Wednesday’s practice at 6:00pm or Sunday morning practice
at 8:30am. Both runners and walkers of all ability are welcome
to come out to our free run clubs! Hey, and if you decide that
running with a group is what you love, you can even sign up
for one of our clinics! The sky's the limit!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is what is going on at the Running Room this week:
ITS LAST CALL FOR RUNNING ROOM MAGAZINE COUPONS!!!! That’s
right, where DID October go? But the fact is November is just
around the corner, meaning 1 thing…the 20% off coupons
expire on October 30th and if your still holding onto it you
are “running” out of time! So if you have been holding
off for that one special item, feel free to come and peruse
our new stock because, who knows, that perfect top may have
just arrived.
Tip of the week:
Having trouble watching your pace during a run without slipping
into a meditative state? Are you not quite ready to invest in
a heart rate monitor? Well maybe its time you tried running
with a buddy. Not only is it more safe to have a friend to help
you watch for cars and help you if you’re hurt, but by
running with someone who is roughly your pace or a little faster
it helps to keep your heart rate up. Also, running with a friend
motivates you. Its one thing to let yourself down by not going
for a run, but when you let your friend down, you’ll really
get it!
This week's product highlight:
Our new Brooks line has just came in! Chalk full of gorgeous
new hats and gloves along with tops perfect for layering. Complete
with tights and wind pants, this is one line that will be hard
to match. We have many great products coming in this month,
including winter Pearl Izumi! This includes their innovative
material, which actually has temperature that works with the
weather to have the best comfort for you. Also, our Running
Room apparel is still coming in so right now we have jackets
in all sizes if you missed out earlier. Remember, if we don’t
have your size we are always happy to order it in for you!
We are seeking instructors for many of the January clinics.
If you are motivated to share the positive experiences you have
had walking or running, call us at 523-4664 and we'll share
the process with you, as well as let you know what resources
are available to make Clinic Instruction as easy as possible.
Upcoming Events
The Running Room is now taking registrations for the Santa Shuffle.
This is a 5K race for walkers and runners of all ability to
come out and get in the Christmas spirit. The race costs $15
and you receive a souvenir t-shirt. Proceeds go to the Salvation
Army.
The Resolution Run is filling up quickly! There is a limited
amount of space left for this fun 5km race on New years Eve
that not only provides motivation for a wonderful year filled
with running, but you also receive a free runningroom jacket!
The jackets are also currently in the store if anyone wants
to try it on before ordering sizes.
