Rocks!! Run in Prince Edward
County
It was a family affair at the 4th annual
'County Marathon' for Rocks!! members, Lise and Vince
Perdue and Lynn and Ken Stubbings. Ken has been here every
year but it was Lise and I's first opportunity and we
were not disappointed.
The 'County Marathon' is unique according
to the Organizers. In a small community of 30,000 they
have put on a fully sanctioned event on a fully closed
road course with all of the features you would expect
at a premiere event. "From
race kit pick up on Friday October 12th to the final awards
on Sunday October 14th , from the pasta dinner through
to the beer at the finish line, from the slowest walker
to the fastest men and women running respectively for
the Rolf Lund and Gayle Ornikova we take a back seat to
no other race on the planet".
The point to point marathon begins in Wellington
and travels east through farm country to Bloomfield where
the course turns south towards towards Sandbanks Provincial
Park. The 1/2 marathon commences just before the Park
at the marathon half way point. This set up provides a
great cheering section for the 42kers as the half starts
after most marathoners have passed that point. Both runs
travel south and then east east through the Park and then
the course turns northeast towards its final destination
in Picton. The course is is very runner friendly with
mostly flat country plus a few rolling hills and a couple
of good tester hills towards the latter run stages to
keep everyone on their toes. The countryside is beautiful
and the fall colours are close to peak at this time of
year. The fully closed roads in an idyllic rural setting
is icing on the cake. This run comes highly recommended
for those looking for a quality race without the big event
pressure.
Ken Stubbings adds:
|
| I was extremely happy that Vince and
Lise made it down for the run. The events are always nicer
when you are with friends. PEC was a good day. I missed jumping
over the fence by 17 seconds; but in truth I had no idea how
my run was going to go. At the start I was worried about not
having enough recovery time since Scotia Bank. But when the
35km mark came I knew I would be fine. The day started frosty,
with the fall colors making the chill worth while. The half
point is still the best part of the run with all the 1/2 marathon
people cheering. It really motivates you to push on. At the
24km mark near Sand Banks Provincial Park, a wild turkey swooped
across the road just in front of the guy about 10ft ahead
of me. The number of runners were down I expect due to some
people going to T.O. About ¾ of my local group went
there. It was nice to see a local person win the race. Darrell
Sutherland of Peterborough won at 2:32. Congratulations to
Vince for running his goal of sub 3:39. Thanks to Lise for
keeping company with Lynn for a nice ½ marathon run.
Lynn switched from a volunteer to running the ½ after
hearing that some Rocks were coming down.
Time to recover for the future.

The
Toronto Marathon Report
by Trevor Shamas and
Heather White
|
Trevor Shamas - Sunday, October 14, 2007
It was another glorious day for a run in TO last weekend,
and run we did in the TO Half Marathon! At the top of the
highlights, my friend Heather White ran her first 1/2 and
posted a fantastic finishing time. If you factor in the
international travel she's had over the last month and the
impact it had on her training schedule, not to mention the
time zone confusion and the fact that she hopped off a plane
from the UK 14 hours before the run started, that fantastic
time starts to look more like an unbelievable time! Best
part was the smile on her face at the finish line. Seems
to me that's what this sport is all about.
The race started on North York Blvd this year, which parallels
Yonge St one block to the west. This introduced some extra
distance at the start such that the southern end of the
course ran along Wellington St vs. Lakeshore. I preferred
the route, but North York Blvd is a little too narrow to
accommodate the start of a 3,700 participant run. I got
caught a good 10 feet behind the 1:45 bunny and had an awful
time getting through the crowd. Expect I wasn't alone there.
The finishing area was also improved this year, with fences
entirely enclosing it to keep the riff-raff (i.e. non-runners)
out.
I wasn't too keen on the checked baggage handling, as all
of the bags were unloaded from the trucks onto the ground
and grouped by bib numbers. However, the area was well patrolled
and I was met by a marshal as soon as I walked in who made
sure I got the right one.
I also found it a little strange to find the Church Of
Scientology present in the finishing area. They were offering
some sort of recovery assistance. Not sure what it was all
about but I did manage to excuse myself politely from the
fellow trying to shepherd me in to their tent.
As I mentioned in my Scotia Marathon review, the organization
of that race is now far superior to the TO Marathon: corrals,
race literature, participant lineup, media coverage....etc.
However, I still love this course and look forward to doing
it again.
And: thanks to Mike C for the encouraging words with 500m
to go. Sorry, Mike, I didn't recognize you right away!

Heather White - Sunday, October 14, 2007
First off – WOW, what an incredible
feeling to hit that finish line and still be standing!!!
Ha ha. I can’t express the complete and utter HIGH
of hitting a target that one has worked so hard to achieve…I
am still beaming 2 days later, even though I must confess
that I am struggling to climb a set of stairs! That is OK
though because this feeling of accomplishment is definitely
worth a few sore leg muscles. The feeling of pushing your
body and mind into a zone where it hasn’t been before
and achieve something that seemed like a pipe dream just
months earlier cannot be surpassed or easily described in
words. I am hooked on running now is all I can say! I can’t
really comment on the route from a comparative perspective
as it was my first time running a race like this, except
I will say that the scenery was great and the crowd was
very supportive…it really made the difference to keep
me going at the low point during my run….and the lows
definitely make the high points all the better! I found
my bag easily (perfectly intact) and I thought the food
tent was great as I really needed it after covering 21km.
I thought the event was very well organized overall –
a great time appeared to be had by all. |

Who Will Be
There?
Ray Zahab
A true inspiration to anyone who has a dream to achieve!
An endurance runner who has accomplished what was once impossible:
running across the Sahara Desert! Read more about Ray Zahab
below.
We are working on our list of confirmed speakers for this
fall event. We are in touch with some exciting athletes,
and we cannot wait to share the good news with you!

Ray Zahab - The
Ultimate Endurance Athlete
7,000 km, Six Countries, 111 days,
One Desert
On February 20th 2007, the impossible became possible.
Ray Zahab and his partners Charlie Engle (from the US)
and Kevin Lin (from Taiwan), crossed the Sahara Desert.
They ran 111 consecutive days to accomplish their goal.
They saw with their own eyes the beauty
and culture of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya,
and Egypt along the way, and met some incredible people.
It was a life changing experience to struggle
through injury, extreme fatigue, and harsh weather conditions,
and their lives will never be the same after such an incredible
accomplishment.
Ray is the prime example of motivation and
determination. He continues to coach, train and motivate
others to live up to their full potential as athletes.
This is why we invited him to speak at Guts & Glory
II. He is looking forward to visiting Sudbury and to relive
his experience in the Sahara with you

Club Update |
Hello All!
Although the weather has been dark and gloomy outside don’t
let it get you down. Brighten up your day by stopping by the
Running Room and checking out our new clothing for fall! The
classic Reflective Jackets that we all love are available in
a number of exciting new colours for both men and women. Winter
is also nearing and t! he store is slowly gearing up for the
colder weather. So if you’re lacking warmth in your running
wardrobe stop by the Running Room to stay warm during your runs.
We would also like to send out special congratulations to all
runners and walkers who successfully completed the races in
Toronto this past weekend. If this race inspired you to learn
more about the sport of running/walking, or if are you wanting
to do a race soon but need the motivation of a group setting
to get you out there and train? Keep in mind that you are always
welcome to come out and join the clinic of your choice on Wednesday’s
practice at 6:00pm or Sunday morning practice at 8:30am. Both
runners and walkers of all ability are welcome to com! e out
to our free run clubs.
This is what is going on at the Running Room this week:
If you received your monthly magazine the 10% and 20% coupons
are valid until the end of the month. So whether you want to
get geared up for the cooler weather or if you just need that
extra bit of motivation to get you out running or walking put
that coupon to good use before its to late. People have also
already started their Christmas shopping and if you're one of
those early birds, visit the Running Room for unique gift and
stocking stuffer ideas that your fellow runners and walkers
will love!
Tip of the week:
The cooler weather is nearing and many runners debate everyday
on what to wear in this unpredictable season. The answer is
to wear layers (particularly on the top) for example a breathable
thermal shirt under a breathable water resistant jacket. This
way the sweat is still being wicked away from your body keeping
you dry and warm and you can also remove layers as necessary.
Layers are a good way to be prepared for any sudden change in
the weather.
Our new Mizuno fall line is in for both women and men! These
lines include purple highlighted half zip-ups, thermals and
tights for women and red highlighted half zip-ups, thermals
and tights for men. Come in and check out the new line and keep
warm on the road and trails while looking stylish.

Yellowjacket
Invitational, Hosted by the University of Rochester, Rochester
NY
10/13/07
Led by rookie, Kellie Laing's top-30 finish, Laurentian's
women's cross-country team placed 8th out of 15 teams at
the Yellowjacket Invitational in Rochester, New York this
weekend.
A fast start by Stephanie Flieler set the
stage for the Lady Vees, almost all of whom ran personal
bests over a 5k course. Laing placed 28th in team scoring,
breaking the 20:00 barrier with a time of 19:59. She was
followed by Maggie Robins, 40th with a personal best time
of 20:13, Hilary Kilbreath, 48th in 20:237 (PB), Stephanie
Flieler, 52nd in 20:31, and Celeste Woods, 90th in 21:41
(PB)2q. Amanda Seed in 22:38 and Becky Van Zeyl in 23:31
finished as displacers. The race involved 163 runners from
U.S. and Ontario universities.
The average time for Laurentian's five scoring
runners was 20:34.
"I ran a conservative race," said
Laing, of her relatively slow start," But I realize
I'll have to start faster for the OUA's."
The race was won by Laurentian graduate,Leila
Angrand, in a time of 17:48. Angrand is now studying for
her Masters of Occupational Therapy at the University of
Western Ontario.
"We held Meghan Juuti and Kirsti Dolson
out of the race," said head coach, Dick Moss, of his
top-two runners. "We want to make sure they're healthy
for the OUA's in two weeks. But this gave some of the other
girls, like Kelly and Maggie, a chance to shine."

Discomfort Zone / Trysport Fall Colours
Ride and Pot Luck - Oct 21, 2007 -
UPDATE
Well folks, it looks
like Mother Nature will be treating
us to a beautiful day on Sunday for
our Fall Colours ride in Parry Sound.
The forecast is 17 and sunny. As always
though, it's smart to bring some warmer
gear in case conditions change.
It also looks like we will have a
nice turnout from both Sudbury and
Barrie which will be fun and social.
For those of you asking about what
to bring, this is a Pot Luck BBQ so
bring something to throw on the barbie
plus maybe a salad or a dessert. Also,
this is BYOB although there will be
some refreshments there.
Finally, for those who were asking,
yes the event is still a 1pm ride
and a 3-6pm BBQ. That was the best
time for the most people and should
correspond to the warmest part of
the day for our ride.
Details are below. Please let me know
if you need directions or a ride.
See you there!
