Capreol Ski Trails at 10:00 am

3rd Annual

TURKEY TROTT

1k and 5k Trail Runs

Cool and rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of those who came out to participate in the Rainbow Routes Association's 3rd Annual "Turkey Gobbler". The event was held this Sunday in Capreol on their cross country ski trails. Entrants were treated to fall colours at their best on the scenic routes through the hardwood forest. Light rain only intensified the colours. Members of the Capreol Ski Club donated their time to ensure the chalet was open and stocked with refreshments like hot coffee and sausages for the masses upon race completion.

The Organizers provided good incentive for going fast by providing turkeys for all event winners. There were numerous placing awards as well. A bonus event was the Queen/King of the Mountain Dash where Kids and Adults Divisions got to charge up the ski hill. First one up got a turkey.

The Turkey Trot in Capreol was the third event put on by the Rainbow Routes Association to showcase trails within the City of Greater Sudbury area. The first one was held at Fielding Park and the second at Lake Laurentian. Look for the fourth run next year - possibly at Windy Lake Trails.

at Naughton Trails
Monday October 8th 2007

Naughton's 6th Annual Turkey Gobbler gets bigger and better every year. A record 171 participants braved the threatening rain to walk and run Sudbury Fitness Challenge's last event of the season.(Walden Cross Country Fitness Club does host one more running event, the 4th Annual Fun Run Under the Lights - at the Naughton Chalet and Trails Thursday, November 1, 2007). For only $5 all were treated to well groomed trails with jaw dropping autumn colours. And to top off the day, free hot dogs, sausages and drinks were served at the finish line. Placing prizes were not awarded. EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IS A WINNER, NOT JUST THE FASTEST ONES. For those who like to challenge themselves All Results are Here.

Thanksgiving Runs

by Lise Perdue

I was very lucky to run the Turkey Trott in Capreol with my 9 year old niece, Elle, on Sunday. What a treat that was for me. After the first kilometer, this race became a nature adventure as we would stop every few hundred yards with an excuse to see “how beautiful” the scenery was. Despite my warning about taking it slow, Elle blew me away on the home stretch. Way to go Elle on your first 5 k. I am very proud of you. Congratulations to the race organizers, to all participants and to the turkey winners.

On to the Naughton Trails for the Turkey Gobbler, on Monday…despite the iffy forecast, this was certainly the best attended Gobbler I’ve seen. To the committee, keep up the good work your trails are awesome and you are doing a good job at attracting the family unit. It is always a great pleasure to come to your trails.

       Points Leaders

                                                                                    by John Leonard

As promised, here are the SFC preliminary points leaders for 2007. If you or someone you know is close to these points and not on the list then please email me with corrections. I may have put someone in the wrong age group or forgot a race and that could affect the points totals. There were several age groups that were hotly contested. Typically the higher the points the more hotly contested that age group was. I am sending out this list so everyone can see them and help me to correct them before they are finalized. This process must be done immediately. Remember it is your responsibility to calculate and submit your points. Very few actually submitted there points so I did most of the calculations myself. Thank You, and congratulations to all the participants and winners in 2007. John Leonard. For inquiries or corrections, please contact John at jcleonard705@hotmail.com

Who Will Be There?

Ray Zahab
A true inspiration to anyone who has a dream to achieve! An endurance runner who has accomplished what was once impossible: running across the Sahara Desert! Read more about Ray Zahab below.

We are working on our list of confirmed speakers for this fall event. We are in touch with some exciting athletes, and we cannot wait to share the good news with you!

Ray Zahab - The Ultimate Endurance Athlete

7,000 km, Six Countries, 111 days, One Desert
On February 20th 2007, the impossible became possible. Ray Zahab and his partners Charlie Engle (from the US) and Kevin Lin (from Taiwan), crossed the Sahara Desert. They ran 111 consecutive days to accomplish their goal.

They saw with their own eyes the beauty and culture of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, and Egypt along the way, and met some incredible people.

It was a life changing experience to struggle through injury, extreme fatigue, and harsh weather conditions, and their lives will never be the same after such an incredible accomplishment.

Ray is the prime example of motivation and determination. He continues to coach, train and motivate others to live up to their full potential as athletes. This is why we invited him to speak at Guts & Glory II. He is looking forward to visiting Sudbury and to relive his experience in the Sahara with you

Minna's Year End Update

by Minna Mettinen-Kekalainen

Rocks!! Wheelchair Athlete

Hey Vince and Sudbury ROCKS!,

Since some of my friends read the Sudbury Rocks weekly newsletter (How can I miss one myself), I thought
to share with you all how much I've enjoyed racing with you at the premiere race of the year - the Sudbury Rocks 1/2 marathon, and the firecracker 5 km where I met a young runner out in his first 5 km race.

Those were the only two road races I managed this summer, yet they both were quite deeply memorable for me this year. My first 1/2 marathon at home was the beginning of my tapering down from the 1/2 marathon distances to race 1000m, 500m and 250m. Using what I had gained training for the 1/2 marathon, I tried to pull it all down to a 250m sprint race at the World Sprint Trials in sprint kayaking for individuals with disabilities.

This year started with plans for many races and venues from road races, sprint kayaking, to rowing. Despite the focus I placed on rowing, I fell out of my wheelchair at National Team selection camp and caught pneumonia at the World Sprint Trials, despite the hundreds of hours kayaking I sprinted to a season ending without completing the marathon I am registered for this weekend. I'll be sky diving instead.

My plans began with the ROCKS 1/2 as my season opener and the PEC marathon as my finale. Instead, I raced in countries I rarely imagine I'd enter, jumped out of planes more often then raced on the roads, kayaked more meters then I've ever raced, and cherished the company of my two kids.

Life is never predictable, and rarely easy.
Same with running, racing, or training.
Yet it is within the settings of racing and training, that I found myself.
Found a way to be at ease with myself,
and a way to relish others around me.

Thank you Sudbury ROCKS for doing all you have for me, with me, and for being a big encouragement along the way these last couple of years. I look forward to our big race next year, and seeing what distance I can muster then.

May you all be well, and remain strong this winter and see you on the roads, trails and the races!
-minna

Discomfort Zone News

Discomfort Zone / Trysport Fall Colours Ride and Pot Luck - Oct 21, 2007

Many of you have expressed interest in having a social team get together at the end of the 2007 season. In particular, Sudbury team members have been keen to connect with the growing number of Discomfort Zone athletes from the Barrie area and elsewhere.

The solution was simple: Host a Fall Colours Ride and Pot Luck in Parry Sound!

David Bialkowski of Bialkowski Trysport has agreed to be our gracious host, and a number of his local Parry Sound group will join us for some of the most enjoyable cycling in Ontario. Afterward, we all get to stuff our faces back at David's store/home, make new friends and training partners, swap lies about our 2007 season and fearlessly look ahead to 2008.

The event will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at 1:00pm (ride) and 3:00pm (Pot Luck).

Both the ride and Pot Luck will be held at Bialkowski Trysport, 77 Bowes St., Parry Sound

Friends, training partners and family are welcome. Carpooling can be arranged.

RSVP:
Mike Coughlin (705) 919-7162, mike@discomfortzone.com
David Bialkowski (705) 746-8179 david@pstrysport.com

See you there!
