Canadian Duathlon Championships in Parry Sound

by Steve Fessenden

On Saturday, September 15 Parry Sound hosted the
National Duathlon Championships and the Pan-Am
Duathlon Championships. Over 200 athletes competed in
a variety of events which included a sprint distance
and the International Duathlon distance. The Greater
City of Sudbury was well represented in all
disciplines including Mike Hay who competed in the
elite division against some of the best duathletes in
Canada and the USA. The weather early Saturday morning
was cool and windy as the cyclists headed into a brisk
headwind on the way out of transition on the first
part of the 10km loop. The course designed by Swyft
Sports and Bialkowski Trysport in Parry Sound featured
4 x 2.5km run loops, 4 x 10 km bike loops and 2 more
run loops to complete the International distance. The
course design allowed for excellent fan support which
again Sudbury didn't disappoint. The Sudbury fans
were great as local athletes competed throughout the
day. A special thank you to the Guembel family who
made the trip to volunteer in the cool conditions. The
National Championships offered 12 qualifying spots per
age group for the 2008 World Duathlon Championships in
Rimini, Italy. Sudbury athletes had excellent results
and represented the region with class.

Who Will Be There?

Ray Zahab
A true inspiration to anyone who has a dream to achieve! An endurance runner who has accomplished what was once impossible: running across the Sahara Desert! Read more about Ray Zahab below.

We are working on our list of confirmed speakers for this fall event. We are in touch with some exciting athletes, and we cannot wait to share the good news with you!

Ray Zahab - The Ultimate Endurance Athlete

7,000 km, Six Countries, 111 days, One Desert
On February 20th 2007, the impossible became possible. Ray Zahab and his partners Charlie Engle (from the US) and Kevin Lin (from Taiwan), crossed the Sahara Desert. They ran 111 consecutive days to accomplish their goal.

They saw with their own eyes the beauty and culture of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, and Egypt along the way, and met some incredible people.

It was a life changing experience to struggle through injury, extreme fatigue, and harsh weather conditions, and their lives will never be the same after such an incredible accomplishment.

Ray is the prime example of motivation and determination. He continues to coach, train and motivate others to live up to their full potential as athletes. This is why we invited him to speak at Guts & Glory II. He is looking forward to visiting Sudbury and to relive his experience in the Sahara with you

The Five Stages of a Runner

by Jeff Galloway

Here is the second chapter from Galloway’s Book on Running, “The Five Stages of A Runner.” If you have been running for a while, you’ll probably be surprised (and amused) to read Jeff’s description of the stages we all go through.

About Jeff Galloway: Most will know him best as a Runners World Columnist. He's much more. Read about Jeff at his website here...

The Five Stages

I STARTED RUNNING when I was 13. I was immediately intoxicated with a beginner’s enthusiasm: the very special thrill of exertion, and a feeling that my body had vast capabilities. Of course, I tried to maximize every jog and thrill on that first run and then had to hobble around for a week, almost too sore to move.

But once the soreness diminished I was back out there, running again. I was hooked. As in any skill or craft, there were various stages of involvement, competence and enjoyment. Now that I’ve been running for over 25 years, and have spent a great deal of time helping others weave running into their lives, I see a similar pattern of evolution in just about all runners.

Progress is a matter of learning, maturing and knowing yourself; one stage leads logically to the next. Not everyone has the same aspirations; all runners are not seeking Olympic gold. But understanding the experience common to most veteran runners — though you may not go through all five stages described here — will enable you to minimize the pitfalls and maximize the gains of your running future.

Discomfort Zone News

Wet and Wild at the Esprit Triathlon

This past weekend a couple of Discomfort Zone athletes travelled to Montreal for the Esprit Triathlon. This event is held in and around the Olympic Rowing Basin on Ile de Notre Dame, with the bike leg taking place on the incredibly fast surface of the formula 1 race track. The event is unique in that all the popular distances are contested, right up to the full Ironman distance, and all on the same multi-loop course.

This year we were hit with rain and cool temperatures, which made for some interesting challeges on the course. Still, both Dave Welsh and myself perservered on what proved to be a tough day at the office. Luckily, the blazing fast course kept our times repectable and after 4:27:04 and 5:08:55 respectively, we enjoyed the finish line and some well earned food!

Muskoka 70.3 More than 75% Full

As many of you know, there is a new Ironman 70.3 Triathlon being held in Huntsville Ontario on Sept 14, 2008. The Muskoka 70.3 Triathlon has been open to registration for a few weeks now and incredibly is over 75% sold out. This is rare for a first year race, and many Ontario triathletes could be kicking themselves in a few weeks for not signing up when the event sells out. Race details can be found at www.ironmanmuskoka.com

Are you ready for the Half Ironman distance? I typically recommend two seasons of triathlon training as a prerequisite to beginning a half ironman training program, although some athletes with a strong background in running or another sport might be able to succeed with less. If you are considering signing up for this race and have any questions, drop me a line at mike@discomfortzone.com.

Discomfort Zone/Bialkowski Trysport Fall Ride and Open House

Come join us the Discomfort Zone Tri Team at Bialkowski Trysport in Parry Sound for a fall colours ride and Pot Luck on Sunday, Oct 14. The 1.5-2 hour ride is scheduled for 1pm (those wishing to ride longer can opt for an earlier start) with the Pot Luck immediately afterward at 3pm. This is a great opportunity to meet other multisport athletes from Sudbury, Parry Sound, Barrie and elsewhere. It is also a great excuse to ride the great Parry Sound roads and enjoy a hearty meal afterward.

Please RSVP to Mike Coughlin at mike@discomfortzone.com with your interest.

See you there!

Mike
