Sudbury Masters 31st Annual Ramsey Tour

Excellent running weather and a very good turnout made the 31st Annual Sudbury Masters Ramsey Tour a very successful event for the Organizers. The high level of participation provided the Sudbury Masters with a few thousand dollars which will be used to rebuild the trails around Laurentian University. Thank you everybody for supporting our Run.

Lise adds: GREAT SUCCESS!!! Congratulations to our organizing friends. It was also nice to see new faces amongst the runners. Well done and keep up the good work. Thank you to all volunteers. You have a very challenging job and we may not always get to thank you personally on that day. See you next year.

Rocks!! Ladies Run 50k Trail Run in Hell

Rocks!! members Karen Beaulieu and Monique Fournier travelled to Hell this weekend to test their mettle in one very tough event. That's Hell Michigan by the way located near Ann Arbour in the Lower Peninsula.

From the site: "You must be livin' in a cave if ya ain't heard of the DWD (Dances with Dirt) Relay and Ultramarathons! I'll tell ya what it aint', it aint' no place for wimps and it aint a place for pansey, "don't get my shoes dirty" runners afraid of a few roots and cliffs. 50 Miles or 50KM of rugged crap running ... hiking. Love it or hate it, it's a serious achievement. Starts in the dark ... so you can finish in the light! Fully aided about every 3 -6 miles. The Head Goat, Dirt Diva, Trail Dog, Swamp Dog and your Crew In Dirt invite you … dare you, to join the adventure!"

Karen and Monique did join the adventure and signed up for the 50k portion. Start time was in the dark at 6:00 am. Karen finished close to 1:00 pm and Monique sometime after 1:00 pm. Official times were:

80 Beaulieu, Karen Unknown, NA F 46 6:46:45.64

106 Fournier, Monique Unknown, NA F 45 7:18:35.47

Owen Sound Triathlon

by Leslie (Katharine) McLosky

I enjoyed a sunny warm weekend at the Owen Sound Triathlon. On Saturday when I got in and registered for the Olympic distance on Sunday I found out that the sprint that was going at 3:00 on the Saturday had been modified to a run bike run. Initially I thought it must be due to the wave action, being on the big water and all. WRONG, it was due to water temperature 56 degrees. YIKES, you can imagine my response. I had been freaking out when I looked at the website and they said the water temperature was going to be 65 degrees. I mean when you swim at Cambrian in 86 degrees a wetsuit without fleece is not going to cut it. I sat in my Jackson and Barnard motif motel watching Seinfeld reruns psyching myself for what I assumed would be a run bike run the next day. You know what they say about assume….

Next day, apparently the water had warmed up 10 degrees! I resigned myself to freezing my assume off and suited up. It wasn’t that bad at all, so you couldn’t feel your hands or feet, who needs them, it’s all about technique right….

The bike course was excellent very few hills, (YES!) The run was two loops on the harbour front so there was no need to run on the roads. I found it was one of those courses that because it was winding it seemed to go by faster than running a straight point to point.

They had excellent snacks afterwards. (always a priority) I rate meetings the same way……good food = good meeting, no food = waste of time.

All in all it was a fun day and despite my whining I qualified for the World Championships in Vancouver next June.

Coughlin Wins Sprint in Wasaga

Discomfort Zone Coach/Mentor Mike Coughlin took his gang to Wasaga for a quick Sprint Triathlon this weekend. Very low water temperatures took out the swim so the Organizers quickly put another Sprint Duathlon in place and the race was on.

Mike was on his game this day taking first place overall in a time of 1:00:46. It was a good battle against a young hard charging Chadwick Ruby who finished in 1:01:23.

Run Club Update

Click Here for Run Club & Clinic Information

Hi Everyone!

A GREAT BIG CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who participated in the Ramsey Tour this past weekend! The weather was fantastic for this longstanding event, and it was exciting to see so many people out and running. It was a great show as always from the event organizers - thank-you very much to the Sudbury Masters - and the volunteers were great in keeping everyone on course and hydrated.

The sidewalk sale is here! We're setting up today so that everything will be ready for you to check out at Practice Club tomorrow. This is a great way to stock up for winter training or if you're ahead of the game you can even get a head start on your Christmas shopping!

Tip of the week:
Monitoring your heart rate will take the guesswork out of training and ensure that your training intensities are optimal. If your heart rate during exercise is too low, you aren't working yourself hard enough to do yourself much good. If your heart rate is too high, you will most likely fatigue before the exercise can be beneficial. Monitoring your heart rate ensures that you stay within your optimal target heart rate zone, optimizing the benefits of your workouts and eliminating uncertainty about safety.
From Running Room's Book on Running by John Stanton

This week's product highlight:
The fall Nike line is in! For the ladies there are tights and capris with reflective to help keep you safe during the fall and winter; also available are layering tees and long-sleeve shirts for fall. Gents, for you Nike has produced a great line of both short and long sleeve tees with matching fitted shorts and tights or a loose short. Any of y'all who are hooked up with the Nike Plus kit will find Plus clothing available in these lines.

We are currently seeking a motivated individual to join our management team. Interested parties are encouraged to bring a resume to the Running Room.
