A Rock!! Takes
on Lake Placid Ironman for the 2nd Time
In 2004 Katherine
McLosky first set her sights on USA Lake Placid. That
August she achieved her dream completing the 2.4 mile
swim, the 112 mile bike and the 26.2 mile run in 14:18:34
finishing the run portion just before sundown. This
year she returned attacking the course with a new confident
energy. The swim portion matched her previous time but
her bike portion came in over 38 minutes faster and
her run was over the top fully 56 minutes better than
her 2004 time. Her overall time this year dropped to
12:46:26 placing her 883/2208 starters and 19/62 in
her 45-49 year old age category. Congratulations Katherine

Here are the complete results from
the Ian McCloy Island Swim on July 22 2007.
Water temp: 73 or 22.5 C
Conditions: flat water, sunny up to 27 C with very high
UV
Buddy Green proved many things in
the 24th annual running of the Island Swim Sunday morning.
First: swimmers can get faster as
they age. Second: there’s no place like home and finally,
that a hat trick can happen in swimming
For the third year in a row, Green,
a national-calibre triathlete, lowered his time to win the
one mile or 1.6 kilometre event in the Ian McCloy Island
Swim. The event is named after McCloy who was a national
record holder for the mile in master’s swimming.
Green bettered his time from last
year by three seconds en route to winning in 18 minutes
33 seconds. The top female was Kyleigh Commito, finishing
in 21:28.
The 62 entrants enjoyed near-perfect
conditions to race in the 100-, 400-metre, 1.6 kilometre
and 3.2 kilometre events.
In the two-mile event, Molly Green
was the top overall finisher in a time of 45.51 for the
two laps of Meda Island in Lake Nepahwin. Craig Duncan was
the top male swimmer in 48:41.
The swim is one of the few remaining
events of the Sudbury Fitness Challenge though attempts
are being made to resurrect the Beaton Classic and the Mountain
Bike Challenge will be held again on Saturday, August 4
in Capreol. For more details, visit www.sudburyrocks.ca.:

From Bialkowski Trysport Website:
Welcome to McKellar, located
20 kilometers East of Parry Sound
on HW #124. This thriving rural cottage community
is blessed
with beautiful lakes and shorelines. The course
will certainly rank
highly with all triathletes! The swim course is
in Lake Armstrong.
A small in-land lake that is clean, deep and calm.
The out and back
bike course is on a beautiful but challenging stretch
of HW #124
with fully paved shoulders. The run will take you
down McKellar
Centre Road. A scenic, windy and hilly country road.
All in all a
course an “olympian” would dream of!
Members of Mike Coughlin's "Discomfort
Zone", the "Nickel City Tri Team" and other
locals took advantage of the close location and challenging
course that is McKellor this weekend. Some took on the Sprint
Tri while a few took on the Olympic Distance Tri. Ben Sidney
was our only local representative in the Sprint Duathlon
- which he won. Our fastest local in the Sprint was Brooke
Gougeon (7th overall and 2nd in her age group). Mike Coughlin
represented us well in the Olympic Distance Tri with a 3rd
place overall and 1rst in his age group.

SUDBURY ROCKS!! "Run for the Cure" Team
It takes teamwork to create a future without
breast cancer.
September 30, 2007 will be the tenth year
for the "Run for the Cure" in Sudbury and from
the outset the Rocks!! have played a role in its success.
We initially competed and contributed as individuals,
then some of us went to the organizing side while others
put together teams to help strengthen our commitment to
the cause. Our most successful team, in the Women's category,
was Team W.O.M.B. (Women of Motivational Bond) captained
by Sheila Yaw-MacLean. This team won the Women's Team
Challenge every year it participated. In other words that
team collected the most amount in pledges of any other
team in that category. All made possible by the efforts
of Sheila and the rest of you who took part in those events.
Thank you for doing that.
It's time to do it all over again. The reasons
for taking part have not changed. Breast cancer has hit
our own ranks many times. I believe everyone has somebody
close who has been affected by breast cancer. So we'll
keep on fighting.
Sheila Yaw- MacLean has once again stepped
up to the plate and is captaining a different team this
year. To get more people involved she has changed team
categories and is putting together a "Friends and
Family " team. This category allows everyone to be
a participant and team member. The team is registered
online under the name of Sudbury Rocks Running
Club. If you plan on participating in the event
on September 30, 2007, please consider joining Sheila's
team so we can together help raise money to find a cure
for breast cancer. Just click on the link below and Join
the Team. The more people we get registered the more we'll
make a difference. Let's make our 10th year the most successful
one yet.

and breathable trainer with cushioning and flexibility for someone
who is a high-arch neutral runner (yellow).

Half Ironman Race Simulation
Workout and Pot Luck BBQ
Saturday July 28, 2007
July 25, 2007
Hi everyone,
Some clarifications and
updates about this Saturday's Half Ironman simulation
workout (full details listed below):
1. Everyone is welcome to participate in all or part of
the workout. There is no charge, and all you need to do
is show up. Distances are adjustable, but the minimum
ride loop is 65km. If simply riding 65km is a big endurance
challenge for you, then consider joining us and starting
the ride while others are swimming, then taking advantage
of mutual encouragement as you see each other on the course.
2. For those who have volunteered to help out - thanks!
We are still looking for a few others to help out at the
transition area aid station and the run aid station. If
you have a canoe or kayak and are willing to paddle alongside
swimmers during the swim, even better. If anyone feels
like taking pictures of the event, that would be awesome
too.
3. For those participating in a Half Ironman this summer,
I highly recommend preparing for Saturday like you would
a race, complete with your planned nutrition, racing outfit,
and race-specific equipment (eg. race wheels) if applicable.
The exception is that unlike the race, there will be no
aid stations on the bike course so you need to bring all
nutrition and water for your ride with you (there WILL
be aid stations on the run with gatorade endurance, cola
and water).
4. The bike ride is self-supported. That is, we are all
on our own in terms of nutrition and mechanical support.
That said, riders are encouraged to help out if they come
upon another rider with a mechanical breakdown they are
having trouble with.
5. I encourage everyone to look over the course maps before
Saturday (links below) so they know the course in advance.
For the cycling options, estimate how far you will ride
in 3:00-3:15 to determine which extensions to add to the
65km basic loop.
6. If you plan to come to the post-workout BBQ, let me
know. In terms of what to bring, I plan to have burgers,
sausages, veggie burgers and juice and pop. If you are
interested in having steaks, let me know and we can arrange
that. If people could bring salads or dessert items that
would be perfect! Also, this event is BYOB.
Any other questions? Feel free to call me at (705) 919-7162
or email me at mike@discomfortzone.com.
