Firecracker Roadrace 2007

by Dick Moss

The annual Firecracker 5km had a nice showing of TNOR athletes. Thanks to long-time organizers, TNOR alumni Ron Poirier and Malcolm Steven, and Vince Perdue. After founding the race 20 years ago, Ron is passing the organizational duties on to others. Malcolm who drove from Waterloo every year to assist, and Vince, who has been helping organize for the 13 years the race has been in Lively, are also retiring and will finally get a July 1st weekend off.

Every year, the Firecracker has donated money to Track North and also to their main charity, the Breast Cancer Association.

Many, many Track North athletes have raced in the Firecracker over the years (and taken home shoes and other super prizes) including a number of our OFSAA and National medallists. I've always thought it was one of the best events on the road racing circuit - well organized, great course, super prizes, friendly and fun!

Thanks Ron, Malcolm and Vince!!

Dick

Note: Dick's Track North runners have always supported our event by coming out and putting on a good showing. Here 's how they fared this year:

Ellerton in Europe

Andrew Ellerton has been busy racing in Europe over the past week.
He came 9th in Salamanca Spain on July 4th with a 1:47.8 for his first race. Felt sluggish and didn't run well tactically.

Then a very nice 3rd place in Padova Italy with a 1:46.66, off a 52 second 400m split. He beat some good international runner and is starting to round into shape again after dragging a bit during the month after NCAA's.

He may race again on Wednesday, before returning for the Canadian Nationals in Windsor this weekend.

Timberman Race Simulation a success

- Next one scheduled for Saturday July 28

On Saturday, July 7, six hardy souls embarked on the first Half Ironman Race Simulation of the season here in Sudbury. For more than half of the participants, it would be their longest workout ever, offering plenty of opportunity to practice pacing, fueling, hydration and mental toughness.

After completing the swim in 34-37min, the group headed out of town onto a single loop course designed to keep riders of varying abilities together with an optional out and back section. The pace was gentlemanly to start (once out of town, everyone was encouraged to dial in their Half Ironman race pace and do their own ride), but Mother Nature was not nearly as kind. The skies opened up at the first pedal stroke and did not ease off for the entire bike ride. Of course, this only served to show that race day can serve up anything and that a little mental fortitude can go a long way. Everyone passed the test with flying colours and made it out onto the out-and-back run course. Our one rider not planning to run was also kind enough to lend a hand and provide some shelter for the remote aid station.

By the end of the workout, more than 75% of a Half Ironman distance triathlon had been covered and everybody finished strong. The cool conditions did not require the same nutrition and hydration as a hotter day might, so that challenge is left for another day. I have a feeling that day will come during the second race simulation scheduled for Saturday July 28 at 7am at Nepahwin Beach, where more than 90% of a Half Ironman will be covered.

Are you looking to optimize your long course training? Are you looking for an endurance training challenge? Feel like helping out (we are looking for a handful of volunteers to help with aid station support and other tasks)? Drop me a line to express your interest.
