           Parry Sound ON

Bialkowski Trysport opened their Parry Sound sport season with the "Bring on the Spring" 2k, 5k and 10k road race events last Sunday. All distances started at the Bobby Orr Community Centre and ran along local streets. The 5k and 10k courses would be considered a good challenge as there are a good mixture of hills and flats. The Runs are ORA sanctioned and are "Class A" rated. Great food, awards and prizes awaited all finishers.

And there were Rocks!! and locals in the finishing groups. Mike Coughlin, Steve Fessenden, Mel Muise, Patti Socransky and Janet Guembel competed in the 10k while Dan Welsh tackled the 5k. Their results are here.

Bialkowski's next event is the "McKellor One" on July 22, 2007. All multisport enthusiasts should consider this one. Check out Trysports's Website at: http://www.pstrysport.com/index.htm

Mike Coughlin reports:

Hope you enjoyed the great weather this past weekend. I sure did, and enjoyed running in the "Bring on the Spring" 5k/10k in Parry Sound with a handful of other locals.

This was my second year doing this spring race put on by David Bialkowski. I like to support David's races since he gives so much to the sport. Having invested in his own chip timing system, David is one of the few people out there who can organize and execute all aspects of a road race or triathlon in-house.

Traversing the neighbourhood streets of Parry Sound, this 2 loop 10k is NOT fast. It is a fun and challenging course however with lots of hills to test your strength and skill. I had the added challenge this year of choosing to do a sprint workout 2 days before the race that left me pretty sore, and my "warmup run" was more of a hobble - ouch!

When the gun sounded I was pleasantly surprised to find I could run at 10k effort without too much trouble, but the hills was another matter, and they are everywhere on this course. A nice change from the "flat and fast" courses at the big races, but pretty hard on the legs!

My final time of 39:27 was slower than I had hoped for, but was still a good hard run. It was great to see us guys get our butts handed to us by the girls who won both the 5k and 10k races outright - wow! For those wondering about the first and second 5k splits, I estimate the halfway timing mat to be at 5.06km, which combined with downhill finish means that a 30-40 second negative split in the results represents an even split for the race. There is no way I negative split this one!

The best part of this race is that it's a great excuse to bring the bike down to enjoy some great road riding in the area. Four of us took advantage of the weather and quiet cottage country roads and snuck in a ride before heading back to Sudbury. A perfect way to end a beautiful Spring morning.

Congratulations to local Discomfort Zone athletes Steve Fessenden, Melanie Muise, Patti Socransky and Dave Welsh for their 10k and 5k finishes on this tough course. Steve even managed a PB with a 40:37, just 6 days after running the Boston Marathon.

New Life in the Sudbury Fitness Challenge

There is new life in the Sudbury Fitness Challenge and the Beaton Classic will be revived. At a meeting amongst a few of the Events Organizers it was decided to attempt to keep the Sudbury Fitness Challenge viable. There are presently (6) events that fall under the SFC umbrella (Nickel Loppet, SudburyRocks!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes, Canoe Marathon, Ian McLoy Island Swim, Beaton Classic and Mountain Bike Tour). The plan is to let each Event Team totally run their unique events. They would be responsible for advertising the Event on their own websites and posting results there as well. One individual will be responsible for tabulating all Event results to determine overall SFC winners. To provide continuity and ease of searching for Fitness Challenge Events, the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club will provide a Sudbury Fitness Challenge Page which will include access to All Fitness Challenge sites and any other available data. The Access Page is now active and will be updated as information is provided to me. Note the new Link at the top of the Latest Running News Page. Of great news is the Nickel City Tri Team will take ownership of the Beaton Classic this year. Format details are being worked out but the event date has been set for Sunday, August 12, 2007.

It's great to see new action in the SFC and absolutely wonderful to see the Beaton return. Good luck All Event Teams.

Laurentian Access Road - Official LU Position

Good news on the access road issue. Laurentian's Board of Governors have officially declared opposition to the proposed access road through the trail system (much of which is on Laurentian property).

A portion of their statement is below.

Upon recommendation of the Property Development Committee, the Board agreed "that the interests of the University and the community will be best served by traffic management and development options that do not involve a new access road to the campus such as currently proposed by the City of Greater Sudbury." The Board also called on the City to establish a task force of key stakeholders and interested parties to "consider and recommend options for managing traffic on Ramsey Lake Road both now and in the future."

This will make it difficult for the city to approve the road since they would have to expropriate LU lands, even though their stated reason for building the road was to service the university.

Mayor John Rodriguez has also gone on record, saying that no road would be built during his mandate. He has signed the petition opposing the road.
