North America's Oldest Road Race Beckons

This Sunday will mark the start of Hamilton's 113th running of the "Around the Bay" 30k Road Race - the oldest distance running event in North America. Rich in tradition, it has been run and won by the best from around the world, including Boston Marathon winners and Olympic gold medallists. Way back in 1894 Billy Marshal was first across the line in 2:14. That mark has been lowered steadily throughout the years. The current course record for men was run in 2000 (Joseph Ndiritu in 1:32:53). The current ladies mark is held by Lioudmila Kortchaguina in 1:46:05.

Mere mortals enthusiastically take part in this event also as about 5500 runners and walkers will make their way from the start in downtown Hamilton, around the bay to the hills of Burlington and back home in Hamilton to a fantastic finish in Copps Colleseum.

And the course is excellent but challenging. The first two-thirds of the route is flat and fast, but runners then encounter a series of hills that are usually windblown. There may be a bit of lingering snow and ice here. About four and a half kilometres from the end, they charge down the steep Valley Inn Road. At the bottom, a little guy named Stan Wakeman—a regular over the last fifteen years—blasts the Queen song “We Will Rock You.” Give him a "Low Five". He deserves mucho kudos for his support. Then comes a winding, 500-metre "monster" climb up the other side of the valley. Many unsuspecting runners will be reduced to a walk here. At the top, on York Boulevard, only three and a half mildly downgrade kilometres remain before the race finishes in downtown Hamilton. Prepared runners will gain lots of time here. Others will be reduced to a survival shuffle. Keep going! At about the twenty-eight kilometre mark the Grim Reaper will attempt to cajole you into stopping. Don't! The Colleseum and the finish are in sight. Run strong into Copps and see yourself cross the finish line on the Jumbo Tron provided just for you.

Naturally Ontario's most famous road course has beckoned numerous Rocks!! and locals. Many are first timers and are approaching the event with much excitement and a dollop of trepidation thrown in. A few of us regulars will be there as well to wish the newbies well and congratulate them as they don their well deserved medals at the finish line in Copps.

Next week, read all about the results of the 113th running of Hamilton's "Around the Bay" Road Race.

Exercise Boosts BrainPower

Forwarded by Tim Uuksulainen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Exercise boosts brainpower by building new brain
cells in a brain region linked with memory and memory loss, U.S. researchers
reported on Monday.
Tests on mice showed they grew new brain cells in a brain region called
the dentate gyrus, a part of the hippocampus that is known to be affected in
the age-related memory decline that begins around age 30 for most humans.
The researchers used magnetic resonance imaging scans to help document the
process in mice -- and then used MRIs to look at the brains of people before
and after exercise.
They found the same patterns, which suggests that people also grow new
brain cells when they exercise.
"No previous research has systematically examined the different regions of
the hippocampus and identified which region is most affected by exercise,"
Dr. Scott Small, a neurologist at Columbia University Medical Center in New
York who led the study, said in a statement.
Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the
researchers said they first tested mice.
Brain expert Fred Gage, of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, had
shown that exercise can cause the development of new brain cells in the
mouse equivalent of the dentate gyrus.
The teams worked together to find a way to measure this using MRI, by
tracking cerebral blood volume.
"Once these findings were established in mice, we were interested in
determining how exercise affects the hippocampal cerebral blood volume maps
of humans," they wrote.
They of course could not dissect the brains of people to see if new
neurons grew, but they could use MRI to have a peek.
They recruited 11 healthy adults and made them undergo a three-month
aerobic exercise regimen.
They did MRIs of their brains before and after. They also measured the
fitness of each volunteer by measuring oxygen volume before and after the
training program.
Exercise generated blood flow to the dentate gyrus of the people, and the
more fit a person got, the more blood flow the MRI detected, the researchers
found.
"The remarkable similarities between the exercise-induced cerebral blood
volume changes in the hippocampal formation of mice and humans suggest that
the effect is mediated by similar mechanisms," they wrote.
"Our next step is to identify the exercise regimen that is most beneficial
to improve cognition and reduce normal memory loss, so that physicians may
be able to prescribe specific types of exercise to improve memory," Small
said.
