Minna at Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships 2007

by Minna Mettinen

Minna Training

On Sunday February 4th I came in 2nd place at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships with a time of 4:52.8 in the 1000m.Unfortunately due to several cascading unforeseen circumstances, I did not beat my PB from a month ago."The worst snow storm" my coach-Callen McGibbon has ever driven through, took a 30 min. section of the highway 1hr 25 min. therefore I arrived @ 10:10AM (race @ 11am). (original estimated arrival time was to be 9:30am).

Having never been allowed to use 'clamps' to create a stationary seat during training, for the first time I was going to be using clamps to create a stationary seat. Once I registered, I had 20 min. prior to the race to warm up. Placing the clamps for the first time was a challenge, to which my coaches strength was beyond the abilities of the clamps to hold up... one broke), and the seat was slightly too far ahead (knees bent too high), so we quickly had to duck tape the seat into place ( thank goodness for the cooperation of the race directors to permit it), [we called it the Northern Ontario erg. repair aka the "Red Green Show" method ]. By then it was 10 min. to race time.

I warmed up for 7 of it, then proceeded to my 'lane' and had 3 min. to warm up there. Nerves were so bad, I thought I was going to puke or... worse. Luckily my body didn't follow suit. This feeling was predominantly due to all the prior circumstances, AND the HUGE amount of spectators (in road races, the spectators are scattered, not 1000 people in one large room with 62 lanes of rowing machines, super loud squeaky voiced announcer-annoying to the extreme ).

My start was as I planned, to go with a 2:21-2:20/500m split bringing me in @ 4:40 finish
(10.7 secs faster then my first test, which is what had accomplished in training ), @ at 35-37 stroke rate. I was "ok" at the start, then I somehow lost concentration, either due the screaming lady, nerves, adrenalin rush or? who knows, but I bumped up to a 41-44 stroke rate, fell down to a 2:25.3 -2:30 split, until 80 metres at which time ave. split was still up at 2:25.9, with that higher stroke rate, I had used up too much energy and didn't have it in me to pull my final time down as much as wanted to.

So I ended up a 4:52.8 (1.1 secs slower then my last test and 12 sec.'s slower then my PB in training) Yet I qualified for first place in my disability category. (for race results http://15625.vws.magma.ca/2007files/CIRC_2007.pdf
See page 38-adaptive rowers)

Once checking out the complete Rowing Canada monitoring program participants, I realized that I had dropped from 1st place to 2nd (.8 sec.'s splitting me and 2nd, but a whopping 3.5 sec.'s slower then a new comer who placed 1st in Canada on Feb. 4th [in Quebec] )

Prior to the race a former Olympic Team Canada rower and the current women's conditioning coach, came by to take a few photos and informed me there was "quite a lot of anticipation" among Rowing Canada to watch me race. This left me feeling both honoured AND hugely 'pressured' realizing that someone out there is actually 'watching' me, with intention. ugh! it was not a great feeling prior to the race.

That race was a BIG learning experience, I obviously NEED to learn to tune out the crowds, while still listening for the voice of my coach. then after Alison the Adaptive team Canada co-ordinator took a lot of time to talk to me. Among her positive feedback specifically directed to my form she said considering it was my first public 'race' I did 'exceptional'. She introduced me to all the Team Canada members, coaches and medical officer.

Basically the end result is that some fine tuning is needed on my technique prior to the selection camp ('seat racing')
at the London National Training facility late May after my ROCKS 1/2 marathon.

To my great sup rise a Sudbury Rowing club executive member came to watch me race. He said he wants to become an adaptive rowing coach, and will work with me to get an Adaptive program hopefully by next summer. In the meantime I will be shuffling between rowing for the Barrie Rowing Club and racing here in Sudbury.

Strangely my body felt like a 'wreck' in comparison to the 1/2 marathon I did last fall. These 1km 'sprint' type races are quite difficult to adjust to after having been training for a half marathon.

Finally, some random spectator gave me a gift, a shirt that says "you row like a girl. Good for you!"

Now the ROCKS 1/2 training will begin, while I complete 2 more 1 km tests for Rowing Canada (which I will treat as interval training for road racing).

Want a Really Good Cup Of Coffee??

If you're like most of us Sudbury Rocks!! runners, you like to run and then you like to talk about running over a good cup of coffee. We've been doing just that for years now. From Tim-Bob's to the Bucks, we've tried all the brews - until now....

Two Wednesdays ago, as I headed off to my usual beverage establishment, I was pleased to see an "Open" sign on a brand new business. Yes folks, the Old Rock Roasters had just opened their doors on Minto St. and they were serving "Real Coffee".

Of course I went in and was treated to an excellent Americano. Since then a few of us have made the place a regular stop, Carole and Libby always treat us right and constantly broaden our taste bud's horizons with unique new blends. And you have to check out the roaster onsite. It serves as a good furnace in this cold weather.

I encourage all you coffee aficionados to check out Old Rock Roasters. I know you won't be disappointed. For information check out their web site.

"Ladies, Another large Americano Please!".

Run Club Update

The Running Room Club Update: February 13, 2007
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Hello Everyone!

We hope that you have been enjoying this wonderful sunny weather for the last few days. It's been a great change from the dreary messy stuff we've been getting for the last couple of weeks!

It is still cold out, dipping as low as -38 some days, so please make sure you are properly prepared to be out for extended periods in these conditions. This includes wicking base layers, warm insulating layers and a wind resistant shell. And socks. Don't forget the socks. You all know how I feel about Smartwool - incidentally we have a new stock of these socks, so if you missed out on the first round come on in and have a peek. In this weather, they're not likely to last long!

And in regards to this cold, cold weather - this week's product highlight is Bodyglide! We all know how wonderful (and necessary) Bodyglide can be in avoiding blisters and chafing, but did you know that you can also use Bodyglide to protect exposed skin from cold weather damage? Slicking some on before heading out for your walk or run can keep you comfortable and your skin healthy during drying winter weather.

Now for your winter weather training tip - use your partner! Be a great walking/running buddy and keep an eye on your training partners. Watch for signs of frostbite (such as white or blotchy skin, numbness in the affected area) and hypothermia (incoherence, slurred speech, clumsiness or poor coordination). Make sure you seek medical attention if you do see any of these signs.

Check your email for the 15% off coupons that went out to our Running Room Rewards members this week. We have an outstanding inventory of all your favourite shoes right now and we'd love for you to take advantage of another great opportunity to save! Bring a print out of your coupon in before 9 p.m. February 25th to enjoy the savings. If you are not yet a Rewards member, you can sign up online or in-store to be eligible for future promotions.

Registration Fee for Ottawa Race weekend goes up February 15th!
Sign up early, and save! You are able to register for this event here at the Running Room.

2007 Discomfort Zone Spring Break Training Camps

Dear Fellow Triathletes and Cyclists,

Come join us for a training experience you will never forget!

Stunning scenery. Quiet roads. Epic climbs. The famous Blue Ridge Parkway . Endless running trails at your doorstep. All this within the limits of a city that Frommer's called "One of the top 12 travel destinations in the world".

I am excited to announce the 2007 Discomfort Zone Spring Break Training Camps in Asheville, North Carolina in April. Last year's mid-March camp in Winston-Salem and Boone was good, but the weather was still a bit cold in the mountains and the location was not ideal. I was lucky enough to stick around and do some training a few weeks later in the Asheville area, and discovered the perfect location (and timing) for a North Carolina training camp.

The Camps:

I will be hosting 2 consecutive week-long training camps, with 3-8 athletes in each camp: An Intermediate Level Full-Service training camp with all training sessions coached and a few other bells and whistles, followed by an Advanced Level Self-Supported training camp where participants are expected to be self-sufficient and capable of riding for 3-5 hours in the hills every day. Both camps are geared to triathletes, although road cyclists may also take advantage of this great early season opportunity to ride in the Appalachian Mountains.

Where we will be staying:

The Trails End Vacation Rental House is located in Pisgah National Forest only a mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the North Carolina Arboretum. Running trails are at the door and the Famous Blue Ridge Parkway is only 1 mile away. The property includes a back deck with gas grill, fireplace, full service kitchen, and satellite TV/VCR to stare blankly at after another killer day of training.

Details and costs:

Please email me at mike@discomfortzone.com if you are interested in registering for this exciting training opportunity. From the word-of-mouth interest I have received so far, I expect these camps to sell-out pretty quickly.
