The Running Room Sudbury hosted its third annual salvation Army Santa Shuffle on Saturday, December 2. The event drew approximately 80 enthusiastic walkers and runners including kids very happy to see Santa Clause.

Santa hats, reindeer antlers and blinking noses were in abundance as participants shuffled along the course. A fresh dump of snow (about 15cm) made life interesting for all - especially the unplowed 1km section on the Laurentian path.

Approximately $6,000 was raised for the Salvation Army's Christmas Pledge Drive to assist families and individuals in need during the Christmas season and throughout the year.

"We are delighted with the turnout" said Johanna Gatien, Running Room Manager. " With almost $6000 raised for the Salvation Army, it was a successful day indeed! We would like to recognize Will Tai and Taylor Paxton, who stopped during their 9.3K run to help a lady board a city bus. What a great touch to the morning! Congratulations to all participants, and to the clinic members who achieved their goals, and graduated from their clinic!

See you next year!

Timmins 1/2 Marathon... and more in 2007

Good news for Northern runners. Timmins Organizers are planning a new running event this coming August. Keep your calendars open for this one.

Guy Chenier writes:

We are organising a half marathon (50% road/50% trail), a 5km walk and run as well as a 2km walk and run on August 12th. The venue will be at the new Track and field complex centre in Timmins. We will have a web site and posters made up very soon. There will be some great prizes ($$$$$) to be won (especially for the half marathon). We will need your help promoting the event in Sudbury. I will do the same for your races on May 6th. I am looking to run the full that day. I will keep you informed with updates for our race. Many thanks in advance.

Canadian Cross-Country Running Championships

Jericho Park Vancouver

Two athletes from Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club competed at the Canadian Cross-Country Running Championships in Vancouver this weekend.

Leila Angrand finished 18th with a time of 23:11 over a muddy, snowy 6k course. Her finish places her in the selection pool for the Canadian National team that will compete in North American, Central America and Caribbean XC championships (NACAC) in March. Angrand, a Laurentian varsity runner, was only one spot behind Laura Moulton, the silver medalist at the CIS championships.

Lindsy McNicoll
, also a Laurentian runner, placed 26th in her first Nationals, with a time of 23:57. She was only two spots from making the selection pool.

For some perspective, Lisa Labrecque was 14th in her first nationals. She eventually went on to race for Canada in two world championships.

"This was an excellent effort at a level that is a step up from university competition," said coach Dick Moss. "These are the runners from whom our national teams are chosen."

Also competing for Track North were Katie Scott, who placed 22nd with a time of 22:24. Katie, who is from Mitchell, ON, runs for Steve Eles at Lake State and raced for us in Vancouver.

Steve raced as well, placing 46th with a time of 34:40 over the 10k course.

You can see some photos from the race at the following link (AND BELOW). Leila and Lindsy were wearing their Laurentian singlets:

Timberman Triathlon Road Trip - Update

Hey Folks,

I wanted to update you on our Discomfort Zone Timberman Road Trip. If you haven't heard about this yet, we are organizing a trip out to the Timberman Triathlon Festival in Gilford New Hampshire in August 2007. This is one of the biggest triathlon events in North America, and bigger than anything we have here in Ontario. It is also meant to be one heck of a good time, with Crab Bakes, Lobster Fests and other treats of New England. It's a great race, a great festival and a great place to bring the family. Visit www.timbermantri.com for more info.

Here's the latest news on our end:

Ironman 70.3 race 85% Full:

The "Main Event" of the weekend is the Ironman 70.3 race (Half Ironman) on Sunday. Registration opened on Nov 1 and more than 1500 of the 1800 spots are gone. 10-15 of those spots have been taken by Discomfort Zone athletes and other Sudbury area locals. If you think you are ready to tackle the 70.3 distance in 2007(see below), you will want to be at this event. So register now before it fills!

Sprint Distance and Kids Races also available:

Not quite ready for the 70.3 distance? Join our growing group of Sprint distance athletes who are making the trip as well. The more, the merrier! The Sprint goes on Saturday morning, so the 70.3 athletes will be able to cheer you on and vice versa. Also, a number of our group are planning to bring their kids and enter them in the Kids triathlon on Saturday afternoon. Fun for everyone!

Looking for Accommodation? Join us at the Discomfort Zone race Headquarters!

If you have browsed the website, you have seen that there are lots of options for accommodation, including hotels, condo's, cabins, B&B's and even trailer parks and camping. Our group will be headquartered at the B. Maes Resort Inn and Suites (2 miles from start), where there are condos with full kitchens, hotel rooms, and great amenities including both indoor and outdoor pools, Jacuzzi and a gym. For more info, call 603-293-7526, or visit www.Bmaesresort.com .

2 additional notes here:

1) Not many condos are left so if you are looking for a place with a kitchen, call soon!

2) A couple of us have booked condos and have room for more athletes (2 spots per condo available). If you are looking to share, drop me a line.

Looking for a coach?

If you think you might be interested in a personal coach to help you reach your goals next season, drop me a line. I have coached beginner and experienced athletes to personal bests and age-group awards at distances ranging from Sprint to Ironman. I am accepting 2-3 more athletes for the 2007 season, and would love to talk to you about your goals and find the best way to help you reach them. You can reach me at dzmike@gmail.com.

Live your dreams!
