Clinton Lahnalampi Runs Silverman Full Distance Triathlon...Again

For the 2nd year in a row Rocks!! member Clinton Lahnalampi took on the very difficult conditions of the Silverman Full Distance Triathlon in Henderson Nevada.

Branded as the toughest course in North America by "The Man" himself, Dave Scott, the race features a 2.4 mile swim in Lake Mead, a 112 mile bike ride with over 9,700 feet climbing, and a 26.2 mile run that boasts an additional 2,000 ft elevation gain.

From Clinton's 2005 Run: I am satisfied with my result considering everything I ended up going through to complete the journey. It certainly brought me to a new level of suffering. I ended up 9th overall in 11:38:37 and second in my age division with a 1:13:57 swim split, a 2:29 T1, a 6:04:28 bike split, a 3:34 T2, and a humbling 4:14:11 marathon split.

His 2006 Run: Clinton improved his position from 9th overall to 4th and he came 3rd in his 25-29M age group. His finishing time this year was 11:34:39. Check out Results Details Here.

Race Summary from Silverman:

Harsh winds, choppy water and dramatic hills did not stop athletes at the 2nd Annual Nevada Silverman Triathlon from a fierce competition. We are excited to announce the winners of this year's race.

Top individual male went to Jason Bortz of Edwards, CO, who crossed the finish line in 11 hours, 1 minute and 49 seconds.

The top individual female title went to Beatrix Blattman of Edwards Air Force Base, CA. She finished the race in 11 hours, 42 minutes and 59 seconds.

Mark Warkentin, Eric Bean and Everton Morais came 17 minutes from taking home $100,000.00, in the Centra 100K Challenge. They were the top overall relay team and finished in 8 hours, 17 minutes and 10 seconds.

We are very proud of all athletes who participated in 2nd Annual NV Silverman. With an extreme course and harsh conditions you are not only mentally strong but physically unstoppable. We hope to see you all again in 2007!

Who Wants to Live Forever?...

or... Marathon Running May Pose Hidden Heart Risk for Middle-Age Men

By Catherine Larkin (forwarded by Tim Uuksulainen)

Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Running 26 miles at a time at age 50 or older may sound a little crazy to some. Now, a study suggests competing in marathons at that age may, indeed, be dangerous.

Healthy men over age 50 who finished at least five marathons were more likely to have major calcium deposits in their arteries than healthy men who didn't run as much, said a study presented today at an American Heart Association meeting in Chicago. Calcium buildups indicate arteries may be hardening even without other symptoms.

Marathon runners aren't routinely screened for heart disease even though atherosclerosis, or the slow buildup of artery-clogging plaque, is the leading cause of exercise-related death in older athletes. Testing calcium levels may help doctors predict risks before runners begin training, researchers said.

``Even if you're healthy, the more disease you have, the more likely you will, at some point later, develop a heart attack,'' said Stefan Moehlenkamp, author of the study and a cardiologist at University Clinic in Essen, Germany, in a Nov. 9 telephone interview.

Moehlenkamp said he got the idea for the study after hearing about healthy older male runners who had heart attacks when running marathons. As a man who runs about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) a week, Moehlenkamp said he was surprised by the possibility that long-distance running may pose heart risks to older men.

Moehlenkamp's study only examined calcium levels as a risk factor for atherosclerosis. He said more follow-up research is needed before researchers can gauge the prognostic implications of calcium scores on the study participants' heart health

He cautioned that the study doesn't suggest that exercise isn't good for you. Instead, the research suggests that excessive exercise, such as marathon running, may take its toll on some older athletes. Women are less at risk because they usually develop atherosclerosis 10 years later in life than men and are less likely to be marathon runners at age 60, Moehlenkamp said.

New Rock!! Coming

by Laura Haapamaki

After a lot of hard (but yet fun) work, Drew and I are very happy to announce that we are expecting an addition to the Haapamaki-Anderson family. Our little bundle of joy is expected to arrive on July 17, 2007.

Unfortunately, my doctor put the kybosh on running for the next little while, but says I will be able to pick it back up soon. My racing season is also down the drain for next year, but I will be happy being support for both Riley and Drew during their races. I am hoping to squeeze in a few of my own tri's after the baby is born.

Even though I'm sure Sheila has told everyone, I just wanted to share our wonderful news!!

See you on the roads,

Laura, Drew, Riley and baby

Congratulations Laura and Drew from All Us Rocks!!

Run Club Update

The Running Room Club Update: November 22, 2006
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Hi Everybody!

Ohmigoodness! I'm glad the fog is finally burning off, I was starting to think we'd all need to go out with headlamps tonight!

Weekly tip
The muscles of the foot can and must be trained in order to reduce the risk of injury. Your feet do a great deal of work for you during running [especially during the winter], so give them some special attention each day and watch your strength improve over time. Start with this simple exercise: drop a towel on the floor, stand with one foot on the towel and one off, and try to pick up the towel with your toes.

For other exercises, check out the Running Room's Book on Running by John Stanton (or put it on your wish list in our Christmas Book!).

Product highlights
We've got two new colours of reflective jacket for this year: teal and raspberry! These shells are wind and water resistant and are perfect right through December, January and February over your base and insulating layers.

Ooh, ooh, ooh!!! New Nike apparel! This line is awesome - there's something to appeal to everyone on your Christmas list, from the outdoor winter runner to the gym fanatic. Men, you'll really like the Pro Thermal 1/2 Zip, Tailwind Tights and Slacker Pants. Ladies, you'll enjoy the Macro React Long Sleeve (remember the shirt being promoted in the summer where the scales in the back allow for greater breathability? This is it and it's totally cool!), the PERFECT FIT Pant and the Holiday Short. This is an attractive and functional selection sure to make it onto your wish list!

The Half Marathon Clinic is up and running with Dale Comeau and Stephanie Lawton. We still have some room for anyone interested in jumping into this 16 week adventure. The goal race is the Hypothermic Half or Chilly Half (depending on your adventure seeking personality).

So in case you missed the subtle wish list hints - the Santa Book is up and running! This is a great tool for family and friends to get exactly the kind of technical fabric underwear and Smartwool socks you prefer!

DZ Road Trip to the Timberman Triathlon Festival, August 2007

The initial response has been fabulous, so I am pleased to announce that I am planning a road trip to the Timberman Triathlon Festival, August 17-19 2007 in Gilford, New Hampshire.

This race weekend is one of the biggest triathlon events in North America. In fact, Timberman was voted " # 1 Must-Do Triathlon Adventure" in 2006 by Triathlete Magazine. The marquee event is the Ironman 70.3 race (Half Ironman distance triathlon) on Sunday, in which 1800 will compete, including many top professionals. There are also a Sprint Triathlon and a Kids Triathlon on Saturday, live music, clam bakes, the race expo, kids camps and other activities.

Our exact travel and accommodation plans are still in the works, but the number one priority for those interested in doing the Ironman 70.3 race is to register before it sells out. Registration opened last week, and the race is almost 70% full. So far, 6 members of my DZ team have signed up, along with 2 more from the Sudbury area. My goal is to have at 20 of us travel down to New Hampshire next August to participate in the 70.3 and Sprint races.

Is the 70.3 distance right for you? I believe that for most athletes, 2 seasons of endurance training in triathlon or 1 season of triathlon and a background in another sport like distance running provides the minimum base to begin a Half Ironman training program that will allow them to have a good experience. For those not there yet but still interested in making the trip, I already have a number of athletes planning to come to do the Sprint on Saturday, and those of us doing the Sunday race will be there to cheer you on! Some of my athletes are also planning to bring their families and register their kids for the Kids Triathlon.

To find out more about the race or to sign up, visit www.timbermantri.com. If you have any questions, PLEASE email me at dzmike@gmail.com and ask.

Hope you can join us!

Mike
