Walden Cross Country Fitness Club's

3rd Annual Fun Run under the Lights

November 9, 2006

The Third Annual Walden Cross Country "Fun Run Under the Lights" was once again quite a success and especially well attended by the younger set. It was a pleasure to see lots of primary school age kids taking part with an enthusiasm only the young or truly young at heart possess.

The course is part of the Walden Cross Country Ski Trails and is comprised of a single loop (3k) or dual loop (6k). This section is fully lighted and is quite a treat to run after dark.

Marian Endleman adds: The Northern Lights gave new meaning to our "Fun Run Under the Lights" for an enthusiastic group who came out on Thursday November 9, 2006. We were pleased to see a large number of elementary school cross-country runners this year.
Thanks to all who participated

2006 road racing -1st season in review

by Minna Mettinen

Looking back to the past year now that the road racing season is finished for me ( snow pretty much stops me from going anywhere outdoors), here is my year 2006 in review.

*Jan. 06 started rehab. intensively
(left Hosp. Dec 10th, after 'landing' in a wheelchair Sept.2nd 05).

At that time barely could hold up my head, but for some reason decided that i wanted to train to qualify for the Boston Marathon. (having never been a runner to race any distance prior to this, I chose training for a marathon as a way to motivate myself to go through rehab.)

*Feb 06 Joined the Sudbury Rocks Running club and began inquiring if I could race with them.

* March 06 joined a wheelchair basketball team and played terribly. (having never even watched a game of basketball prior to joining the team - turns out I play much more like a rugby player then a basketball player).

*April 06 got a trainer. Found a Laurentian Athletics student who wanted to do an independent study by becoming my trainer and helping me to adapt equipment so I could use them, as well as teaching me basic training techniques. (by the way, his program only required him to work with me for 200 hrs total but he is still with me, and has put in way more then his 200 hrs. I am so very blessed!)

*May 06 raced my first 5 km race (29:41min.) at the Sudbury Rocks premiere event. The course was tough, about 3/4 of it being up hill!

*May 06 (end of the month) raised several hundred dollars for the 5km MS fundraising event .

*July 06 -5 km Walden Inco Firecracker run, where i placed horribly! (time was somewhere in the 39 to 41 min. mark!)

* Aug. 06 started learning to kayak for the first time in my life.

*Aug.06 North Bay Blue Sky 5 km where I placed 2nd in my age/gender category, with a time somewhere in the 26 min. area. ( First time placing in top 3).

*Oct 06 PEC Half marathon (a first) where I was able to meet my goal of sub. 2 hrs (1:55:+)

*Nov.06 (tomorrow-Tuesday) my first ergometer monitoring program 1 km test for Rowing Canada with the hopes of doing well enough to be considered for the adapted rowing National team in 07.

That will be the end of competitive activities for 06.

Looking back, I feel like I did accomplish something, never having raced a single km in my life when I was able to run, never having played basketball or kayaked when I still could use my legs...

Despite some of the disappointments (like that July race -placed 6th last out of over 130) and precarious health issues I think the yr has been successful enough for me to be happy with it ( unless I totally 'bonk out' in my 1 km test).

CIS Cross-Country Running Championships
Quebec City

Leila Angrand and Lindsy McNicoll of Laurentian's cross-country running team, earned second-team All-Canadian status as they led the squad to a 12th-place finish at the CIS Championships in Quebec City this weekend.

Angrand placed 9th with a 5k time of 18:43 over the historic Plains of Abraham course. McNicoll, running the race of her life, ran 18:55, Her 13th-place finish was seven spots better than her 20th place at the OUA Championships two weeks ago, and a huge improvement over her 64th place finish at last year's CIS race.

"I just went out with the Guelph pack and hung on," said McNicoll." It was the same strategy as at OUA's, but this time I didn't fade in the second half and actually passed two of the Guelph runners."

"The women's program has never had two All-Canadians at the same time," said assistant coach, Darren Jermyn. "Leila has once again shown that she's one of the best in the country, and Lindsy's performance shocked a lot of people."

Laurentian's score of 246 points was a school record and was 94 points better than last year's 13th place finish. LU's best ever finish was a 263-point 11th place performance in 2003. The squad placed 5th among OUA teams at this race, placing ahead of one of the schools that beat them at the OUA championships two weeks ago.

Other Laurentian runners included Caitlin Tino, 72nd in 19:51;Kirsti Dolson, 86th in 20:04, Marnie Smith, 94th in 20:19: Amanda Kosmerly, 104th in 21:02; and Stephanie Flieler, 106th in 21:11.

"We would have loved a top-10 finish," said head coach, Dick Moss. "We were only 17 points out of 9th place, so we definitely had a shot at it. That said, the girls ran their hearts out."

Mike's TRi Website

DZ Road Trip to the Timberman Triathlon Festival, August 2007

The initial response has been fabulous, so I am pleased to announce that I am planning a road trip to the Timberman Triathlon Festival, August 17-19 2007 in Gilford, New Hampshire.

This race weekend is one of the biggest triathlon events in North America. In fact, Timberman was voted " # 1 Must-Do Triathlon Adventure" in 2006 by Triathlete Magazine. The marquee event is the Ironman 70.3 race (Half Ironman distance triathlon) on Sunday, in which 1800 will compete, including many top professionals. There are also a Sprint Triathlon and a Kids Triathlon on Saturday, live music, clam bakes, the race expo, kids camps and other activities.

Our exact travel and accommodation plans are still in the works, but the number one priority for those interested in doing the Ironman 70.3 race is to register before it sells out. Registration opened last week, and the race is almost 70% full. So far, 6 members of my DZ team have signed up, along with 2 more from the Sudbury area. My goal is to have at 20 of us travel down to New Hampshire next August to participate in the 70.3 and Sprint races.

Is the 70.3 distance right for you? I believe that for most athletes, 2 seasons of endurance training in triathlon or 1 season of triathlon and a background in another sport like distance running provides the minimum base to begin a Half Ironman training program that will allow them to have a good experience. For those not there yet but still interested in making the trip, I already have a number of athletes planning to come to do the Sprint on Saturday, and those of us doing the Sunday race will be there to cheer you on! Some of my athletes are also planning to bring their families and register their kids for the Kids Triathlon.

To find out more about the race or to sign up, visit www.timbermantri.com. If you have any questions, PLEASE email me at dzmike@gmail.com and ask.

Hope you can join us!

Mike
