A Rock!!
Runs First Marathon in New York City
By David
Ross
Greetings from the ING New York City Marathon:
Karen and I had the marathon of a lifetime on Sunday (O.K.,
the FIRST marathon of my lifetime), as we trotted through the
5 boroughs together in 4:16:13. The weather was fabulous at
50 degrees and sunny, no winds to speak of, and a pretty reasonable
course (although the downhill sides to a couple of bridges were
NO FUN). There were over 38,000 competitors this year, and the
bottlenecks through the water-stations were something to contend
with, but we managed to avoid disaster (the guy behind us went
down after he stepped on a water bottle). The bands were great,
and the crowd pushed us on, just an amazing day in an amazing
city.
To everyone who helped me get here, thanks !! Special mention
to: Stephanie for teaching me how to go long, Laura for introducing
me to Fartleks (who knew?), Sean for inspiring me on speed days,
Christine for training with me through the heat, and to my coach
for preparing me for a marathon. Vince, if somebody new shows
up next month and asks you how to prepare for a 10 K race, show
them how. You never know what they'll decide to do next.
Dave.

Melanie Muise Caps off
Stellar Season in Angus Glen
by Steve Fessenden
|
Melanie Muise capped off her season with a personal
best 1:29:40 in the half-marathon at Angus Glen in
Unionville on Sunday, November 5. Her goal going in
was to improve on her half-marathon time from Ottawa
(1:36) and she felt confident that she could slide
under 1:32. Those who know Melanie knew she had the
talent to break the 1:30 barrier. With good weather
conditions, 7 degrees with light winds, Melanie
attacked the rolling hills course at a steady 4:16
min/km pace. She crossed the finish line 34th overall
out of the 742 participants. She placed 6th in the
women and 3rd in her age group. A wonderful
accomplishment for the talented runner and duathlete.
The race ended a stellar season for Melanie who
started the season in March by winning her age group
in Hamilton at the 5km Around the Bay race. In May,
she won her age group at the Provincial Duathlon
Championship in Waterloo. The following week she had
a
strong race at the National Duathlon Championship in
Hamilton and earned spots at the 2006 and 2007 World
Duathlon Championships. In July, Melanie flew to
Cornerbrook, Newfoundland to compete for Team Canada
and placed a respectable 10th in the world in her age
group. Not bad for only her 3rd attempt at the
International Duathlon distance (10km run, 40km bike
and 5km run). Under the guidance and coaching on
Ironman Mike Coughlin, Melanie has already set her
training sights on the 2007 World Duathlon
Championships in Hungary in May.
During the Duathlon season, she dominated the Subaru
series winning 5 out of 6 races and easily capturing
the series title in her age group. She also had
tremendous results in her 5km and 10km races. She
continued to improve her personal best time in the
5km, lowering it to 19:35 at the CIBC Run For the
Cure, which placed her first female overall. At the
Wicky 10km, she crossed the line 4 minutes ahead of
the second place female for a comfortable win with a
time 41:25.
It will be exciting to watch and follow Melanie's
progress in 2007 has she sets and attacks new goals,
including a Half-Ironman. Continued success Melanie,
2007 will be a great year!
Note: Steve ran pretty well himself turning a
1:34. Local

DZ Road Trip to the Timberman
Triathlon Festival, August 2007
The initial response has been fabulous,
so I am pleased to announce that I am planning a road
trip to the Timberman Triathlon Festival, August 17-19
2007 in Gilford, New Hampshire.
This race weekend is one of the biggest triathlon events
in North America. In fact, Timberman was voted "
# 1 Must-Do Triathlon Adventure" in 2006 by Triathlete
Magazine. The marquee event is the Ironman 70.3 race (Half
Ironman distance triathlon) on Sunday, in which 1800 will
compete, including many top professionals. There are also
a Sprint Triathlon and a Kids Triathlon on Saturday, live
music, clam bakes, the race expo, kids camps and other
activities.
Our exact travel and accommodation plans are still in
the works, but the number one priority for those interested
in doing the Ironman 70.3 race is to register before it
sells out. Registration opened last week, and the race
is almost 70% full. So far, 6 members of my DZ team have
signed up, along with 2 more from the Sudbury area. My
goal is to have at 20 of us travel down to New Hampshire
next August to participate in the 70.3 and Sprint races.
Is the 70.3 distance right for you? I believe that for
most athletes, 2 seasons of endurance training in triathlon
or 1 season of triathlon and a background in another sport
like distance running provides the minimum base to begin
a Half Ironman training program that will allow them to
have a good experience. For those not there yet but still
interested in making the trip, I already have a number
of athletes planning to come to do the Sprint on Saturday,
and those of us doing the Sunday race will be there to
cheer you on! Some of my athletes are also planning to
bring their families and register their kids for the Kids
Triathlon.
To find out more about the race or to sign up, visit www.timbermantri.com.
If you have any questions, PLEASE email me at dzmike@gmail.com
and ask.
Hope you can join us!
