34rd Annual Wiky Road Race

Manitoulin Island 10km Championships

Sunday October 15, 2006 at 10:50 am in Kaboni

Rocks!! members Frank Lesk and Melanie Muise took top honours in this year's Wiky 10k Road Race on Manitoulan Island. Frank led the way for the men in 38:08 with Steven Odjig in second and Rocks!! Steve Fessenden hauling down the 3rd position. Melanie Muise was 4th overall and led the ladies with a 41:25.. She was followed by Stacy Haner (45:44) and Annette King (46:01). Other Rocks!! in the top ten were John Saftic (45:01) and Vince Perdue (45:12). Lise Perdue pulled out a well deserved 3rd in her age group in 1:02:48.

There were also a few representatives from the Sudbury Running Room led by Kandis Stoughton and Bob Young. Some were first timers at this distance and all did well.

This run is a good one - a point to point course from Kaboni to Wiky and is flat with a good downgrade at the 7k mark making for some potentially fast times when the competition is good. The course record is currently 30:24 but is a few years old. Unfortunately participant numbers were significantly down this year. This is too bad as the Directors have consistently put on a very good event with good prizes - usually for every participant - and more. And it's also what we would call a local event. Maybe next year more people should consider this Run as they put their schedules in place. You won't be disappointed.

The Toronto Marathon and 1/2

by Trevor Shamas

Hey, Coach...

I like to call you with a race report following events I'm at and you're not, but having run my new top-end Samsung through the washing machine on Saturday that wasn't an option yesterday. (It's really clean but dead as a doornail. Literally, that's $200 down the drain. Just replaced it with the $25 bottom-end model. I believe there's some variation of Murphy's Law that says I've therefore eliminated the chances of this ever recurring.)

Anyway, I did do the Toronto 1/2 yesterday. I still like the course much better than the Scotia run. Can't really say it was a whole lot different from other years, though.

Start was the usual mess as there were no corrals to separate runners so the bulk of the people at the front shouldn't have been there. The starter didn't seem to know what he was doing, either. He fumbled around on the microphone, announcing that the race would start in a couple of minutes, then mumbled something about people still coming so we'll be late, then changed his mind again and gave the 2 minute warning.

Once out of the gate and with the crowd spread out a bit, things improved dramatically. Aid stations were plentiful. Medics across the course were good to see. Weather was just about perfect - bit of a breeze, overcast but no rain, and good temp.

Finish area was the usual mess, although the Gatorade station was relocated to the very south end, making it easier to find.

The biggest diff was not having most of the Rocks here! I saw Sherri at the start and I think we were the only two there. Reminded me that the main reason I enjoy this running thing so much is because of all the super folks I get to run and travel with. I'll choose my next run based on where the crowd is going.

Other Rocks!! did attend. Trevor completed the course in 1:35:35 The others followed close behind: Leila Lavallee (1:49:33), Cindy Cavanaugh (2:29:25), Norm Trowell (2:40:56) and Mary Lou Trowell (3:30:50). There were other locals as well. Jill D'Aloisio ran the 5k in  27:10. Other locals are posted.       Check All Results Here

Cheers,
Trev.

Mike Coughlin in Hawaii for the Ironman

Hey gang,

I thought I would send along a little update from Hawaii. First off, many of you have probably heard about the little earthquake we had here. It was quite an experience, but everyone is ok, and it was pretty funny to watch all the triathletes resume their training pretty much right away as if nothing had happened. In my case, I had taken the day off of training and had traveled with my homestay host to the top of Mauna Kea (highest point in Hawaii at over 13,700 ft) to watch the sunrise. When the ground up there started to shake, I thought the volcano was going to erupt!

It is now Monday afternoon here and I am looking forward to picking my parents up from the airport. Most athletes are in town now and there is a real buzz here - race week activities should be as fun and exciting as the event itself.

Tune into www.ironman.com on Saturday if you want to track my progress - that way I can't slack off!

Aloha,

Mike

Run Club Update

The Running Room Club Update: October 18, 2006
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Greetings From the Sudbury Running Room!

I spoke too soon about running in the snow, didn't I !? How bizarre was that on Thursday!? And, although I am anxious for more snow to fall, this is just a little too early - even for me. I'm not ready to adjust my cool Halloween costume (again) so that I can wear my one-piece snow suit underneath. (Please note, I'm not [that] embarrassed to admit that I wear a one-piece.)

Event News:

Congratulations go out to those who ran the Wiky race this past weekend. Special congratulations go out to our 10K clinic members who had their graduation run at this race on the weekend. Hope to still see your smiling faces at Run Club.

We would also like to recognize our Running Room team members Frank Lesk, and Melanie Muise who pushed their way to top spots in the weekend event in Wikwemikong.

The Toronto Marathon was also this past weekend. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the event! Ken Atkins from Lively, walked the half marathon course in an impressive 2:28. Oh My Lanta that's fast! Flinstones car engine - in high gear fast! Way to go Kenneth!

Niagara Fallsview is this coming weekend. We have a big group headed down for this event. Has it been 18 weeks already? I won't mention anything about snow, I promise. We wish you all the best!

Upcoming Events:

Santa Shuffle - Saturday December 2nd, here at the Running Room.
Don't miss out on the early bird special for registration. The registration fee goes up from $15 to $20 (per individual) after November 1st.

Protest the New LU Road Through the Trails

It seems the city's plan for a second road to the university has it running right through the university trail system. It would run from Hwy 69 south (beside the new truck stop gas station) travel right beside Lake Laurentian (next to campus) and bisect three campus loops: Sophie's Loop, the Wall and the Extension.

We have to protest this incredible lack of foresight on the part of our city fathers, and with election time right around the corner, now is the time to raise this issue.

At a time in which I've been raising money to IMPROVE the trails (and the city has just invested in improvements to the Extension Loop), I find this an incredible step backwards. Take the time to protest, and also ask the city counsellors about their stand on this issue.

You can see maps and instructions on how to protest this plan at the following website (the dark grey line indicates the proposed road).
