Two Weekend Trail Runs and a Fall Marathon

Trail Run #1 - October 8, 2006

2nd Annual Turkey Trott

Presented by the Rainbow Routes Association

Event Directors Carol Coffyn and Ted Keenan began organizing the Turkey Trott Trail Runs last year as a vehicle to promote awareness of the trail systems available to people within the Greater Sudbury area. Last year the new Kelly Lake Trail was highlighted. This year the Run moved to the Laurentian Conservation area where 2 distances (one easy and one technical) showed off the Laurentian Lake area.

Over 80 participants experienced fall colours and weather at its best for the 2k and 4.4 k events.

In the 2k distance Tayte Kosmerly was the fastest male (8:44) and Brittney Cooke was the fleetest female (10:33). Both were in the Youth Division. Paula Toffoli was swift walker of the 2k (18:53).

The 4.4k was hotly contested with only 2 seconds separating the first 2 finishers. Adam Hopkins (16:14) just edged out Kerry Abols (16:16) in a hard charge down Cardiac Hill and across the finish line. No other lady was in the running form and speed of Chantal Demers as she easily took female honours in 17:51. The top walker was Alan McQuistin (38:40).

All winners and age group winners were presented with real turkeys and there were enough draw prizes to reward most finishers.

Kudos to the Organizers. Courses were well marked and there was a positive surfeit of volunteers.

Stay tuned for a new location of the Turkey Trott Next year.

Trail Run #2 - October 9, 2006

More Pics Here

The Turkey Gobbler, held on the ski trails in Naughton every year, is one of my favourite trail runs. This time of the season the colours are always spectacular. And the trails, while challenging, are laid out providing good site lines and very good footing. 1k, 3k and 6k distances are provided to satisfy all levels of participants. And all levels come from the very youngest, to youths and on up to the silver haired. For just $5 you get to run in an organized run in the northern forest in the fall and get a sausage or a hot dog when you cross the finish line. What a phenomenal way to promote your Trails and the Walden Cross Country Fitness Club excels at this. I'll definitely keep coming back.

Record numbers attended and and the racing was hot.

Fall Marathon - October 8, 2006

Ottawa Fall Colours Marathon

By Greg Bond ( Rocks!! Member)

I just got back from the Ottawa Fall Colours Marathon in
Cumberland. What a day and what a neat race. It's a very demanding course
with 2laps of a net 60m change, but everything else makes up for it....
including the weather which magnificent.
I had the support of some dozen family members and friends there and they
were allowed to move around the course at will. They were so enthusiastic
that fans of some of the other runners even asked them to cheer for their
runners.

In only my second marathon and what I was hoping was to be my first finish,
I had pretty lofty goals of 3:30, but I managed to hook up with 2
experienced marathoners during the first km that were looking for the same
time ......... one of whom was Melanie Cote who was very nice and very
modest, but whom I gather is a very proficient triathlete. The three of us
chatted the entire first lap which was over in no time - it almost seemed
like the 2.5 km water stations were an interruption to our chatting, but we
had managed what seemed and easy 1:43:38 half and I learned a lot about
hydration and the importance of starting on the nutrition early (though I
still can't run and drink out of those damned cups at the same time).

Anyway, the long and short of it was that Melanie blew a knee at 27k and
Gary finally pulled away from me at somewhere around 36k leaving me and my
family to bring home the final 5k which was perhaps the coolest part of the
whole race. Realizing that I was starting to come unglued, I think just
about everyone in the family jogged a part of that last few k's with me
until they left me to jog that final half km past all the other spectators
and runners.

All in all a pretty cool day.

SUDBURYROCKS!!! MARATHON 2007 Update

by Steve Matusch

Hi All!!!

Greeting from the Sudbury Rocks Marathon 2007 Committee!!!!

Firstly, I want to congratulate everybody out there on a great running season – whether it was your first or your fortieth! As the leaves are turning and you look at pulling the leggings and jackets out of retirement, I’d like to update you one some of the changes upcoming for the Sudbury Rocks Marathon this year. It’s an ambitious set of changes but we’re definitely on the track to make this a very real Canadian destination race.

AGE AND GENDER GRADED STAGGERED START!!!

The Sudbury Rocks Marathon is going to become the ONLY age and gender adjusted, staggered start race in Canada. What does this mean???? Well, it means a lot to those runners over 35 (like me) who are spending more and more in hair colour – or less and less on shampoo!!!

THE SUDBURY ROCKS MARATHON 2007 IS YOUR CHANCE TO SHOW HOW GOOD YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN!!!

World Masters Athletics publishes statistically derived set of numbers that show you how much speed (all training being equivalent) you naturall give up each year due to physiological changes, and how much natural advantage males have over females. For those of you want to see the science behind it, the data is here: http://home.stny.rr.com/alanjones/AgeGrade.html

This year, we’ll be starting our marathon, BASED ON THESE TIMES!! In practice, this means we will have twenty start times – breaking up people by gender and age, in 5 year increments.

What does this mean????

This means that an extremely fit, 55 year old female has as much chance of breaking the tape, to the cheering crowds, as does an equally fit 28 year old male!!! And with out new prize structure, this means that that same 55 year old female could bring home the grand prize!!!!

Why are we doing this? There are three reasons.

1. We started this event with the intent that it be a really inclusive, event – encouraging participation for all ages and all abilities. We think that the new format really promotes the idea that fitness is a lifelong pursuit, and not something strictly for youth.

2. We think it’s a unique idea, and we think it makes our event stand out from all of the others out there. It’s a way to help us build the event.

3. We all thought that is sounded like a lot of fun!

PRIZES AND AWARDS

This year, for the first time, we will be awarding substantial cash prizes for our winners, including a $2000 overall first prize!!!!

LOCATION – DOWNTOWN

This year, the event will be held downtown. This is something that we had some major debates over; the Science North venue was great in a lot of ways. But, in going downtown, we’re able to make the courses (all of them) a lot flatter and faster. And the city is graciously allowing us to completely block off a few streets downtown providing a lot of space for exhibitors and for the course setup.

PASTA DINNER and EXPO

This year, we’ll also be having (for the first time) a pasta dinner, the night before the event with guest speakers – hosted by the downtown Radisson hotel. And we’ll be having a runner’s expo – possibly a small one, but we’re sure that a number of enthusiastic local vendors will be happy for the opportunity to show as their latest and greatest gear and services.

Finally.. (and all great things come with a catch).

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Our race committee is putting in a lot of hard work to build a great event for the city. We’re looking for some additional volunteers from the community to help with the organizing the event – which is underway already. We need additional help in any way that you could contribute your talents – media and advertising, organizing the venue, setup of the course.

If you can help us in any way, drop me a line at the following address – stevem@ionic-eng.com. Or let any of our other committee members know that you’d like to help. We did great last year thanks to all of your help, and we hope to make this year an even bigger success than the last!!!!

Our next committee meeting is Tuesday October 17th, 7PM at the Running Room. Please come on out and help us build a really great event, and support a great cause!

Steve Matusch – Race Director – Sudbury Rocks Marathon.

Run Club Update

The Running Room Club Update: October 11, 2006
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Welcome back from the long weekend! Hope you enjoyed a relaxing few days off with your friends and family.

Turkey Trott on Sunday was a hit! The weather, the crowd, the trails - all beautiful. Yes, even cardiac hill - we think it's a beautiful thing! Just over 75 trotters, including a 6ft turkey. Congratulations to Alan McQuistin who won himself a turkey to take home!! (no, not the 6 ft gobbler)

For those heading to the Toronto Marthon this weekend, we wish you all the best! Saturday morning at 9:00am, there is a the Running Room Friendship Run with the founder of the Running Room John Stanton, at the Commerce Court Running Room. Share your stories, and maybe let them know that no, we aren't running in snow yet.

NEW at the Running Room store!

Adidas, New Balance, Mizuno, and Saucony apparel, just in time for fall marathon season! We'll help you pick out your race day outfit, or just an outfit for the cooler fall temperatures.

Saucony magnetic swift jackets. Coolest thing since, well, jelly belly sport beans! This item can be worn as a jacket, a vest or as a bolero! Awesome!!!

Clif Bar Shot Blocks (think Nibs) - gosh these are fun! We will have runner/walker finger food samplers next week. Come out and have a taste of our gels, bars, beans n things. Yummmmm!

The new Brooks Beast and Ariel have arrived! Is it time to replace those old models yet? For those of you requiring more stability, these shoes are worth a try.

Smart Wool socks. These are the best things I've ever put on my feet!!! They are cushy and warm and I've got a very silly grin on my face right now! Other important points: they wick moisture away from your feet, they keep your feet warm in winter and cool in summer and (da-da-da-daah!) they have odour control capabilities. Fuuuun! They also come in some really cool colours and patterns.

Protest the New LU Road Through the Trails

It seems the city's plan for a second road to the university has it running right through the university trail system. It would run from Hwy 69 south (beside the new truck stop gas station) travel right beside Lake Laurentian (next to campus) and bisect three campus loops: Sophie's Loop, the Wall and the Extension.

We have to protest this incredible lack of foresight on the part of our city fathers, and with election time right around the corner, now is the time to raise this issue.

At a time in which I've been raising money to IMPROVE the trails (and the city has just invested in improvements to the Extension Loop), I find this an incredible step backwards. Take the time to protest, and also ask the city counsellors about their stand on this issue.

You can see maps and instructions on how to protest this plan at the following website (the dark grey line indicates the proposed road).
