Weekend Trisport Activity
Local Trisport
athletes were busy competing in numerous multisport races this
weekend.
Mike Coughlin writes:
DZ Tri Team members and other Sudbury-connected
athletes were busy once again this weekend at no fewer than
FOUR different races around the province.
Near Sault Ste Marie, the St. Joseph's Island Triathlon celebrated
its 3rd annual running with both Olympic and Sprint Distance
Triathlons, Dualthlons and Relays. John and Celena Leonard were
there to take part in the festivities, completing the Olympic
and Sprint Triathlons in 2:40:59 an 1:35:02 respectively. This
was John's first crack at the Olympic Distance, and he won his
age group using the patented Mike Coughlin "just make sure
you are the only one in your age group" method - well done
John! Clinton Lahnilampi from Naughton and Dave Pope from Whitefish
used this clever method to win their respective age groups as
well, with Clinton taking 4th overall. Jason and Kim Hall from
Sudbury joined Celena in finishing the Sprint race. Congratulations
to all.
In Parry Sound, the Swyft Parry Sound Triathlon took place on
the same great course David Bialkowski has been running triathlons
on for years. Brent Poulsen continued his winning streak in
Ontario Races with a stunning course-record setting victory
with a 58:33. Brent was joined by Katherine Knight who was 5th
overall in the women's race with a 1:23:44. Well done!
The Barrie Triathlon was another race in the win column for
a Sudbury area athlete. Up and comer Buddy Green continued his
fine form by taking top honours by more than 2 minutes with
a fabulous sub-hour time of 59:34. Keep an eye on this guy in
future years. Discomfort Zone athletes Chantal Demers and Alexandre
Beland had solid races as well, finishing in 1:09:52 and 1:14:23,
good for 2nd and 4th in their age groups. Chantal was also 4th
woman overall after scoring a PB in the 5k run with a smokin'
18:52 - wow!
At the Cobourg Tri Weekend, Discomfort Zone athletes Steve Fessenden
and Melanie Muise represented us well with solid showings in
Sunday's extended Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon events respectively.
Steve's time of 1:59:00 was good enough for 5th out of 20 in
his age group, an indication of steady improvement. Melanie
was up against some stiff competition in the duathlon, including
several of her fellow Canadian Duathlon Team Members. Melanie's
time of 1:47:59 placed her 12th overall and 3rd woman. Great
job guys!
This coming Sunday marks the Northern Triathlon in Orillia,
a race that doubles as the 2006 OAT Ontario Club Championships.
A large contingent of Sudbury Area and Discomfort Zone Tri Team
members will be heading down for the event, and it should be
a blast. If you are interested in taking part, it is not too
late to sign up. Visit www.trisportcanada.com for more details,
and feel free to email me at mike@discomfortzone.com if you
want to travel or stay with the team.

HSBC - Cobourg
Tri/Du race report - by Laura Haapamaki

Hello
Vince and SudburyRocks!!!
This is my race report from
the very beautiful Cobourg, Ontario.
We set off Friday afternoon
and headed down to Toronto, where Drew finally purchase
a new upgraded bike. (He was tired of me beating
him). Of course getting into Toronto at 5:30pm on
a Friday was an absolute headache, as we hit traffic
jam after traffic jam. After an hour and a half
of stop and go, we made it to Endurosport, where
we spent another 2 hours trying to get Drew’s
bike ready and out the door. Then we had another
2 hour drive back to Drew’s parents in Fenelon
Falls. Now normally I wouldn’t mind all the
driving, but we had to get up Saturday at 5am to
drive out to Cobourg. Worst of all, was I had to
get a 5 year old up at 5am to drive out to Cobourg.
|
This was a special
race for many reasons. For one, Drew was racing on his
new bike. Two, I was competing in my first ever duathlon.
Three, Drew’s dad was competing in his first ever
duathlon (after two DNF’s – bike problems),
and Four; My little man, Riley, was competing in his first
ever Kids Of Steel.
Blah, Blah, Blah, we raced, it
was good. I came in second place female overall, first
in my age group. Drew and his parents did very well.
Now on to Riley. WOW. All I can
say is wow. His age category was 3-5. They had to swim
15m; bike 250m; and run 50m. I couldn’t believe
the amount of little kids getting ready for this race.
It was absolutely amazing. By the time their race came
(around 2pm) the wind started to pick up considerably.
The swim was in Lake Ontario, which got me a little worried
because the water started to get white caps. Of course,
these are 3-5 year olds, so they took us out 15 meters
into the water (parents were allowed to race with their
children), and then the kids had to simply run back into
shore. From there, they ran up the beach into transition
(they were even chip timed) where they had racked their
bikes. Riley was one of the first out in the swim, but
with the long transition up the beach, he started to get
a little tired. He got to his bike, threw his shoes on,
grabbed his helmet and then his bike and he was off. (It
looked like he had done this before). He found the bike
a little hard, as the first 125 meters was uphill. But
after that it was a fast downhill race back into transition.
He threw his helmet down, his bike onto the rack, turned
on his heels and ran as fast as he could. I had to start
sprinting to catch up with him. He passed another little
boy just as he crossed the finish line with a time of
8 minutes and 52 seconds to put him in 17th place.
I have never seen him so proud
as he pushed out his chest and held up his medal for Drew
and I to see. I was such a proud mommy I have to admit
I actually had some tears. It was the best race I have
ever been to. Watching the kids smiling and looking at
their medals was just the most amazing thing to see. Riley
is very excited to do his next race, as both Drew and
I are excited to watch him.

We would recommend this race to anyone. It was a beautiful
weekend, and a
beautiful race in a beautiful location. Did I say it
was beautiful?
Clinton Lahnalampi was also there and represented Naughton
well with a
2:18:51 in the Olympic and Gold in his age group and
4th overall.

entered.
We finished the weekend of camping and racing with
a tour of the Island. We
saw giant great lake freighters, maple syrup farms,
Fort St. Joseph,
beaches, museums and sailboats along with plenty of
deer. Anyone going west
should make this a stop in there travels. Congratulations
to Sherry Smith
and her crew for putting on one of the best triathlon
race events in the
province. Check out http://www.stjosephisland.net/
for information on the
island. They also hold other running races throughout
the year and would be
well worth consideration.

Parry Sound Triathlon

from http://www.swyft.ca/triathlonparrysoundreport.htm
The horn sounded at 8AM and in the Men’s
triathlon, as expected Brent
Poulsen (Sudbury, ON) swam to
the lead and never looked back. Poulsen finished
the 750m swim with a 28 second lead on Ryan Smith
(Ahmic Harbor, ON), a university swimmer, competing
in his first ever triathlon. Poulsen, then jumped
on his bike and took off for the 20km challenging
bike course through hilly downtown Parry Sound.
By the end of the bike, Poulsen extended his 28
second lead to just over 4 minutes. The run did
not change any of the placing and in the end;
it was Poulsen running to the finish in a time
of 58:33, setting a new course record on the day
which was previously held by Wolfgang Guembel
in a time of 1:01:13. All

Buddy Green Requests
Assistance
Buddy Green is a young Laurentian club swimmer-turned-triathlete
who has come a long way in a very short time. He qualified for
the World Championships by winning his age group at Nationals
in Brampton earlier this summer, and is raising money to make
the trip to Switzerland at the end of the month. He was featured
on the MCTV news yesterday.
Buddy has done extremely well but to compete at
the level he has attained is prohibitively expensive. Please
take a read of Buddy's request. Any assistance you can provide
would be greatly appreciated by Buddy and family.
Buddy writes: Hi
Mr. Perdue,
How are you doing? I have been a competitive swimmer for 13
years now and have been competing nationally for 7 of them.
I have just recently taken up the sport of triathlon and have
come a long way very quickly and am now going to Switzerland
in a week and a half for the World Championships and the costs
are quickly pilling up! I was talking with Mike Coughlin earlier
today and he said maybe you could put something about me on
your web site to help me out. If you are able to do this, TD
Bank has set up an account for me that anyone can go to any
of the TD Banks in Sudbury to make a donation and the account
number is 3716-6335890 and my phone number for anyone who wants
to reach me is 705-665-8109. I have also attached a resume just
to give you a little bit more background about myself. Thank
you very much for your time and anything you can do to help
me out.
