Locals at Gravenhurst Triathlon

by John Leonard

It all started on the Steamship R.M.S Segwun (http://www.muskokasteamships.com/).

In this "Escape From Alcatraz" (http://www.tricalifornia.com/alcatraz/2006/index.htm) style swim we were
shipped out to the start line for our deep water, straight line swim back to
shore. My only complaint was that the cruise was so short. I think this is
the only boat in Ontario that makes you swim back to shore. A few guys in
the start went way off course and I had to look several times to make sure I
was going straight and not following them. The swim went well and I exited
at the docks in good time. Then the run to transition began. It had to be at
least 500m and dragged down everyone's swim times.

A quick transition and:
out onto the bike course up out of town and through some side streets
and then out past Taboo Resort,Golf and Spa (www.tabooresort.com). I got a
face full of Exhilarate when the guy I was about to catch dropped his full
bottle and I ran over it and got myself in the face with my own drink. Just
before the turn around I was passed by a peleton of 5-6 drafting riders.
It's a no-no but there wasn't anyone to penalize them as they made it
blatantly obvious with no attempts to pass or spread out. I never wished a
flat tire on someone before but there is a first for everything. The turn
around brought us back into town and I matched my previous race pace.
Transition 2 went quickly and I almost forgot my socks. I have tried this
method before but it only leads to blistered and bleeding feet. 5 seconds
faster in transition doesn't make up for 5km of suffering.

The Run. This is where I have struggled before but was
determined to make a difference. I had blamed the last few poor run results
on heat but after some analysis it appeared that I wasn't fuelling properly.
I have been working hard at improving my runs through speed and tempo work
and some hard brick workouts. A new strategy with gels (basically more of
them at the proper times) was worth a try. This race was cooler but it was
the proper fuelling that made a world of difference. It was as if someone
turned the light on, a "Eureka!" moment if there ever was one. I felt great
on the run. Strong and relaxed. Confident and fast. I kept waiting for the
lead feet and rubber legs to kick in but it never happened. I pushed hard to
the end and probably could have went another gear but was afraid the wheels
would come off. I can't wait for my next run instead of dreading it. I can't
remember the last time I had so much fun on the run. I guess I had to learn
the hard way.

So all-in-all it was a great race day. It was my first time wearing my HRM
in a race and the data was valuable. Swim (170 bpm at the dock) Bike (160
bpm) Run (155 bpm and 160 bpm on the final push). I also used my bike
computer for the first time and it helped with cadence and speed. A good
swim and bike and a phenomenal run. So this triathlon report was really
about my running.

There were some great results from other Sudbury athletes as well. Jim Lung
in the Sprint, Robert Masih and Dave Pope in the Olympic and the husband and wife duo of
Richard and Andrea Ford in the Give-it-a-Tri.

Report from the Rock

by Christine Delahunty

Just a quick note to let you know how the race went. The Tely 10 is my
favorite race - this year over 1800 people completed the 10 mile event - an
impressive turn out for a small city like St. John's.

( from the Tely website: Since 1922, one of the oldest running events in Canada, our own Telegram 10 Mile Road Race, has been the premier road race in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Once a "footrace" for only well-conditioned distance runners, the Tely 10 has evolved in recent years to become a popular sporting and social event for all runners and walkers.)

It was so great to run a race at home. Prior to the gun, all racers were led in the singing of
the Ode to Newfoundland (yes we even have our own anthem here!).
Newfoundland pride was also seen along the race course, as spectators waved
Newfoundland flags and shouted "Come on B'ye - Run". It was a great day
weather wise - cloudy, light breeze, low 20's... I kept my mouth shut when
I overheard a few people complaining about the heat - if I had mentioned
some of the high temp's we've had in Sudbury, I would have been shunned and
called a Mainlander.

The finish was apparently very exciting, as the top two men sprinted to the
end - 2 seconds between them. Paul McCloy holds the record for the youngest
winner of the race (set back in the 1980s), and was back from Calgary this
year to attempt to set a record as the oldest winner. McCloy is the brother
of Ian McCloy (for whom last week's swim in Sudbury is named after). He
ended up in second place, while his wife Lisa Harvey won for the women. The
top 18 finishers were in in under one hour!

No PB for me this year - this was a tough one for me physically after the
marathon, but mentally I was just happy to be running a race on the Rock!
Looking forward to coming back in September with some Rocks!! to join me.
You guys are going to love it here!

Wow - some tremendous results from National Juniors!

Results - National Junior Track and Field Championships,
Sherbrooke, Quebec

Led by Rebecca Johnston's bronze medal in the 400m, five athletes from Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club placed in the top-seven at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships in Sherbooke Quebec this weekend.

Ranked fifth coming into the event, Johnston ran a personal best 55.44 to advance to the finals, then a 55.79 in the rain to claim her bronze medal. Her time was only .22 off the standard for the World Junior Games in Beijing, China. Rebecca remains in Sherbrooke, participating at a National Junior Relay camp.

Tianna Deck, ranked 13th before the event, shocked the field by placing fourth in the long jump. Competing in the pouring rain, Deck nailed her second last jump with a personal best leap of 5.33 metres.

Dan Gardiner placed fifth in triple jump, with a leap of 13.80 metres. He also placed 6th in the long jump with a jump of 6.63 metres.

Dave Thibert placed 7th in the high jump with a jump of 1.85 metres.

Also competing were André Pelland, who placed 25th in the 400m with a time of 1:59.75; Eric Ouellet who was 31st in the 800m with a 1:59.75; Tanya Simard, 14th in the triple jump with a 10.51 metre; and Kaitlyn Tallman who placed 18th in the 3k with a 10:40.84 and 21st in the 1500m with a 4:52.57.
