Rain threatened but nothing deterred the enthusiasm of 30 charging
kids in the 1K and 145 speedsters in the 11th running of the Inco
Walden Firecracker Roadraces.
The Kids Run is always a crowd favourite as runners/toddlers
from under the age of 2 all the way to 11 year olds give it their
all ( with some parental help in a few cases). The young ones
absolutely love getting a race number pinned to their chests and
also the glory of being awarded a medal at the race completion.
There is always a draw for a bike and this year Ryan Koski was
the lucky winner.
The Firecracker 5k had walkers, fast walkers, walk/runners, a
wheelchair participant, runners and very fast runners.
Steve Eles from Saulte MI. took top honours (16:27) with Bart
Nichol from Parry Sound breathing down his neck (16:38). Sudbury's
Jason Wicke took third in 17:11. Liz Forbes from Guelph was first
female (19:01). Lindsy Mcnicoll and Teri Fisher, both from Sudbury,
took the next 2 spots in 19:39 and 19:48 respectively. The masters
winners were Goober Romaniuk from Pickering in 17:40 and Leslie
McLosky from Naughton in 22:13. Russ Thom was our fastest walker
(31:31) and Minna Mettinen took wheelchair honours in 41:32. Congratulations
to winners, placers and all participants.
Special thanks to the Organizers, Sponsors and all you Volunteers
for helping make this a most successful event.
We look forward to seeing all on July 1, 2007 for the 12 the
annual Inco Walden Firecracker Roadraces.

Discomfort Zone Tri Team - Weekend
Results
by Mike Coughlin
It was a busy weekend for the Discomfort Zone
Triathlon Team at various triathlons and running events around
the province.
On Saturday, the annual Canada Day running races took place
in many communities across the country, inlcluding Lively where
the Firecracker 5k was as popular as ever. Of the more than
140 runners that took part, The DZ Tri Team was well represented:
7th Mike Coughlin 18:23 - 3rd M30-39
19th Steve Fessenden 19:51 - 3rd M40-49
20th Melanie Muise 19:53 - 4th F20-29 (tough category!)
28th Steve and Brandon Matusch 20:56 - 1st "Dad and son
in stroller" category
48th John Leonard 22:28
64th Leonora Nemet 24:34 - 4th F19&under
101st Linde Corrigan 29:56
Congrats to all participants and to Ron, Malcolm and Vince for
another well-run event. Full results can be found at www.sudburyrocks.ca
Also on Saturday, a Canada Day 5k and 10k took place in Barrie,
and DZ Tri Team member Chantal Demers was there to take on all
comers in the 5k, taking first female and 6th overall in a time
of 19:35. Great job Chantal!
On Sunday, the National Triathlon Championships took place in
Brampton with separate Elite and Age Group races. DZ Tri Team
member Katherine Knight took on her first Olympic Distance Triathlon
in style, finishing in 2:43:08, good enough for 8th in the F20-24
age category and 157th overall. Congrats to local Sudbury athletes
Buddy Green and Bill Leonard for strong showings in their age
categories (Buddy got 1st M20-24 and Bill got 7th M25-29) and
to Alicia Kaye and Brent Poulsen for racing hard against the
best in the country, finishing 6th and 17th in the elite women's
and mens races respectively.
Full results can be found at www.chiptimeresults.com
Also on Sunday, the North Bay Triathlon went off in windy conditions
that caused a swim buoy to be torn from its moorings, shortening
the 1km swim by about 20%. DZ Tri Team members were there as
well to battle the tough conditions, including Brad Walker who
improved significantly from last year, posting a time of 2:07:56,
good enough for 5th in the M30-34, and Jody Nadjiwon, who succumbed
to the rough waters of Trout Lake but has vowed to exact her
revenge soon. In the team event, DZ athletes Mike Coughlin (swim),
Patti Socransky (bike) and Allyson Batchelor (run) teamed up
to finish in 2:06:22 and 9th in the mixed relay division.
