Running Room Sudbury's Inaugural                               Walk for Wellness

Running Room's Sudbury store held their first official "walking only" event this Saturday. All participants received a pedometer for joining up and a few goodies on completion. With the renewed enthusiasm for walking, I expect this event will be back next year and be even better attended. Congratulations to all!

Kudos to Running Room's newest Manager, Johanna Gatien, for organizing the event. Russ Thom, the 10k winner, extends his thanks as well.

Hi Johanna:

Just wanted to thank you for the great job you did on Sudbury's first "Walk
For Wellness", your first event for Running Room.

I thought everything that needed to be done was done well. You and Vince
did a fine job with the course, water stations and volunteers. The
refreshments were tasty and plentiful. It was a fun low-key event.

It was particularly nice to see some of the runners out volunteering for a
walking event!

Hopefully next year there will be a bigger and faster field.

Thanks again..... Russ

         Canadian Athletic Therapists Association

First Annual National Athletic
Therapy Month

by Kim Lafreniere

The first annual National Athletic Therapy Month kicks off
June 1, 2006

This year's theme is;
Athletic Therapy: Rapid Return to Work and Play

CATA members promote Athletic Therapy awareness every month of the year, but
the month of June each year will be a special time of celebration and
education about the profession.

June is a time of new life when we all get outdoors to enjoy our spring and
summer. Soccer, baseball, softball, slow pitch, Lacrosse, rowing, cycling,
skateboarding are just a few of the outdoor sports that are up and running
at this time. Gardening, occupations that depend on the good weather of
summer like roofing, and construction, are in high gear. Outdoor
recreational activities such as hiking, mountain climbing, swimming, and
sailing etc. are being contemplated as holiday pastimes.

The Canadian Athletic Therapists Association is proud to honor the member's
of the profession of athletic therapy during June 2006 - National Athletic
Therapy Month. Athletic Therapist's are unique health care providers who
specialize in prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of
injuries.

The CATA encourages you to watch for events in your area educating about and
promoting the profession of athletic therapy.

Beat the Heat

Athletics: Beat The Heat
By Kathryn Dempsey
You have been through it before, and it is no fun – having to cut a nice jog or even a race short on a hot sunny day because you’ve overdone yourself in the heat. You may feel the need to stop, sit down in the shade, and sip some cool water for quite some time before you feel yourself again. In extreme cases, runners may need medical attention if they require intravenous fluids or ice-packing to cool their overheated bodies. Why does the sun have such an ability to zap us of our strength and energy? Though you may have the will power to muscle through the discomfort, exercising too hard in hot weather can be dangerous. Fortunately, you can protect yourself against various types of heat illness with some basic scientific knowledge. In this article, you’ll discover the physiological effects of the sun on your body and the hyperthermia (a.k.a. overheating) warning signs to look out for. But first, you’ll get a crash course on the basics of thermoregulation – that is, maintenance and control of body temperature – that occur during exercise. Read more...
